I think if we were to trade two first rounders for Papley we could expect somthing in return, I’d be pretty prepared to give away both first and seconds for the next two year if it mean landing Papley and a high quality mid, we don’t really need anymore youth
Papley will fit into our team pre game he has tape all over him 🤪.. seriously he was good last year for us -- but there is a Long way to go Before banking on him next year .. .. also looks great this year with no other forwards playing

I don't disagree.

Just haven't seen enough (myself) to make any judgement. I can only go by what I read on here and the website.

So reading that the club thinks he will be a star is very encouraging to me.

I’m quietly confident that TDK will be a real impact player - just not for a little while. For so many reasons the lack of a VFL comp is really going to hurt us this season, but especially for TDK’s development. But it’s just the law of averages - as we all know, young bigs usually take a while to fill out and to learn how to best use that size/strength.
He’ll be a weapon in a year or 2.

Saad is one we should go for speed on the Half back flank

Star Essendon defender Adam Saad and the club are still are long way off a new deal, reports The Herald Sun.
The speedster is out of contract at the end of the season and there is no indication a deal will be struck in the near future.
With him, I think it'd depend on where he sees their list. Went there to play successful footy, and has been a part of a mediocre team since.

Realistically, they won't want him to leave, and traditionally speaking Essendon have found a way to get their players to buy into whatever they're doing, even if it isn't working. What'll be interesting is precisely how much he'd be worth to them in terms of contract size and length, as they don't really have many better players than him.

He'd be an interesting addition for us, but if Williams (GWS) is an option I'd prefer to go that way instead. He's not as fast, but he's a better kick and is stronger, as well as having midfield cred.

I am happy to wait 2 years. Can't fit them all in ATM anyway. Casboult has earned his spot through years of graft, and should only be replaced when TDK goes past him.

Pre game show mentioned North are heavily into Williams GWS discussion was it might take 800K to get him out...

There’ll be quite a few teams into him, for sure.
It’s all relative though - I think $800K is a little high, but when you need to get a player to leave their successful club you need to pay a bit over their market value.
What that means for our TPP would remain to be seen. Is it worth to pay that much for Williams if someone else fell out due to his salary?
Not sure what Kreuz/Simmo/Murph would be on, but there would have to be some room created with them finishing up soon.

TDK fills the Levi role when he retires

That doesn’t fill me with any confidence, I don’t think Levi is in the side if Charlie and Harry are fit and if he is Gov isn’t and if he isn’t, then why did we go out and recruit a guy in a position that we were well stocked in.

A lot of teams would love him, not many could afford him clearing cap space depending on the club might be retiring club greats at the end of their career or moving on a particular player(s) simply for the cap space, a combination of both...
Simmo is going as good as ever but if the club needed him to hang up the boots so we could land a gun he’d say no problem Kruezer only 31yr I’m sure he’d love to keep playing for another season or two but his body of injuries might have the club make the call on him too... Murphy has said he’s got another couple more in him at least, he’d be the the one the club would find hardest with a decision particularly if his still playing at a good level... Realistically we’d need too make some emotional but tough calls for any class coming in...

The extra cost for Papley gets you consistency. I've pointed this out before - he's not a player that will accept being stuck in a forward line not getting the footy. If the ball isn't getting to him, he gets on his bike and wins it up the ground.

2020, kicked goals in every game so far, multiple goals in 3 of them.
2019, kicked goals in 20 out of 22 games, multiple goals in 10 of them.
2018, kicked goals in 13 out of 20 games, multiple goals in 9 of them.

Over the last few seasons, he's become a consistently damaging player, who gets himself involved rather than waiting for the ball to fall his way.

So the question just needs to be - is it worth paying a premium for a player who will have scoreboard impact in 90% of games, instead of paying less for a player who will probably only do so in 50% of games.

Still think there's a bit to work out before we make the decision - chiefly, what are we already sitting on (Honey, Phillips, Cuningham etc.). So we need to find the time this season to really assess those players across a reasonable body of work, and then decide if we go all out for Papley, or if we spend that coin on the midfield and trust the young guys to deliver up forward.
Great post.

Wouldn't surprise me if Papley and Sydney came to an agreement. Papley to stay on in 2020 and give his all, cause no disgruntled riffs and be professional. Sydney grant his wish and cash in as best as they can.

If we have a pick 5-10 i would suggest that and maybe a 2nd or 3rd gets it done.

Clubs and players aren't dumb. They dont want to damage their own brand. Last year didn't work. And if Papley has made it clear, watch Sydney release him for a nice deal for them.

I suspect he will be in blue next year

The last sentence sums it up for me.
I just have little confidence in Kreuzer’s ability to play a meaningful amount of games in a season. Such a warrior for the club, and could have really been one of our all time greats if not for some rotten luck with injury. But at the risk of appearing to have no sentimentality, if keeping Kreuz/Simmo meant we missed out on a Williams (or another young AA level talent) then I’d have to let them go.
Murph I think has at least one or 2 seasons left. Won’t be at the same level, but really do see him as a real contributor for a while yet.
For all the talk that the rebuild is right on track, these decisions on club legends nearing the end are always the most contentious.

Question for all of us armchair list managers:
If all things were equal (length/$ of contract) and we could choose between them, would you prefer Saad or Z. Williams at the Blues? And why?

Spot on...

Matt Crouch anyone?

No thanks.
I’m no expert, but M Crouch seems to me to be the epitome of “Empty Stats.” Gets a lot of cheap handball receives and gives off a lot of dinky sideways kicks. Doesn’t seem to do a lot of damage with it.
If he was a free pickup on a cheap deal he’d probably be worth a look, to see if his style of play could be adjusted. But wouldn’t be giving anything meaningful for him.
Happy to be convinced otherwise, as I confess to not having seen a tremendous amount of the Crows.

Williams better rounded player touch more class, can play as a defender wingman midfielder ...

Our number one importance is burying the hatchet and resigning SOS. The list is about to click, even Owies is looking good as a damaging small forward in the 2s. Will he be the Papley we already have?
