An issue with the recruitment of Papley now is his value. Playing as the no. 1 target in the Sydney forward line means he gets much more opportunity. Papley has shown he is more than good enough to make use of this, and is producing a really high output but Sydney are now well within their rights to ask for a premium which we usually only see for elite mids. If we recruit him, it would be primarily as a true small forward with us having far better tall options than Sydney to target going inside 50. Even though we all know Papley is a gun small, whether his 1 million/ 2 first rounders valuation is right for us is a question our recruitment has to answer.

With all the young talent we have I am comfortable trading any number of draft picks over the next 1-2 years. But it might come down to choosing between someone like Kelly or Papley. Kelly has shown he can play as an inside mid or winger to a really high level and I think he would help get us more wins over the course of a year. I don't see Papley leading the Coleman with us playing purely as a SF but on the other hand is the type of player you need to win big games and finals, when we get there. At the end of the day I think both are worth trading 2 firsts for but whichever way we go it will be a defining moment for our club.

Slightly off-topic, but each week I watch the more and more convinced I am that Setters genuinely has a chance of being a full-blown A-Grader. He is absolutely fierce at the stoppages, good inside and a fantastic tackler, evident by having 6 and 10 the last two weeks. He's also incredibly damaging with his disposal too, always finds a good option, whether it's with a handball or a kick. He could give Crippa a run for his money for best handpasser at the club.

I'm also starting to see the Pendlebury comps he was receiving in his draft year, he's showing that intangible skill to somehow find time and space where there should be none that Pendles has nailed down to a fine art.

He's only averaging 14 disposals a game this year, which is actually down from last year, but I don't think anyone has really noticed since all of his possessions are that much more impactful. Imagine if he can get up to around 23-25dpg, which is very possible if he keeps spending all of his time on ball.

Only played 28 games, which is easy to forget considering how long he's been around. Imagine how ******* good he'll be once he hits 50, and by 100 it would not shock me if he's a borderline AA. Absolute gun.

Yes. In a heartbeat, pending on what else they asked for.

Wouldn't we need to Stocker's go ahead to do the trade? He or any other hypothetical player could easily nix the whole deal if they don't want to head to Sydney.

This stuff is part of why I prefer the trading systems of American sports, its sometimes brutal and unemotional as players are dealt like trading cards, but its way easier to get deals like this done. Not saying the AFL system is without its merits though.

Not many examples of a player refusing to go when asked to.
Not much point staying in such a situation.
Clubs would know who not to ask.

And that's precisely why I hate it; the commodification of lives.

Yeah fair enough, I just remember the annoyance of the Fevola trade.

I mean yeah, it does get a bit gratuitous. But athletes at the highest levels are commodified from the instant they enter the system in every major sport.

Prefer to trade for Papley/Kelly with draft picks, paying overs if necessary as will be likely.
We’ve done our drafting, now to properly develop them.

Papley/Kelly/Wines/M & B Crouch?! How are we going to get all this done?

By not taking the Crouch Brothers.

One of Papley or Kelly should be our primary target.
Both elite players of need.
Land that player using our draft pick currency and it will be a job well done.

If the option is Kelly or Papley you take Kelly all day. Papley is absolutely monstering teams at the moment, but Kelly is an A grade class midfielder. An elite midfield can make any forward line look like a million bucks, the same can't be said the other way around.

If both are going to cost two firsts I'd hope the club goes Kelly, don't need our smalls to have as much of an influence if you have elite kicks going to our 3 talls, Kelly and Laird would be an enormous haul for the club

That being said if Kelly is wanting to stay get the chequebook out for Paps, nothing I love more than a player who likes sticking it up to the flogs down at Hawthorn

Yes,
I take your point.
What’s your guess at what might be “coming back” ?

I would like to say a 2nd rounder but as i expect our first pick next year to be in the teens and Sydneys to be late teens or very early 20s, i doubt it will be a second on its own.

If we insisted on a second, it might happen, but a pick swap later on might be needed.

It also makes a big difference what our pick is this year, top 10 pick changes a lot, but im hopeful we are in the top 8.

Will we try to make a free agency splash? Wonder how much Brad Crouch would cost and if AR could get him fit?

Where did the Kelly talk come from? Thought that was all dead an buried last year? Bet he's glad he didn't go to Norf. They are going to be shocking for 5-10 years.

Paps for 900k and two first rounders would be done all day every day by us. Suspect they will use him as part of their danniher plans if he is keen to get to Victoria.

Is TDK Papley trade bait now that Pitto is threatening to take is position as anointed ruck successor?

TDK is still needed as a tall forward option. Casboult won't be around much longer, and Harry/Charlie/Mitch are made of glass.

Id puke if I saw Stocker get traded for Papley. Barely even seen the kid play yet, we had him #6 in one of the greatest drafts of all time, he's tough and explosive and he can kick 60m on both legs, thats not someone you just chuck around as trade currency before atleast giving him a chance to show what he's got once he gets his tank ready to go.

Don’t think we need any more inside mids. We have plenty on our list that will become very good players if given a chance. Waste of money bring in Crouch Wines Viney etc.

Fair, but having a ready made accumulator can really help bridge that next 2-3 years it will take for our young mids to become consistently damaging as a group.

We really should be going full tilt to snag a flag from now on.

Waiting a couple years for some of these guys to come on is a bit of a waste of time, IMO.
