My recollection of Willo, was that he provided more run and carry, I’m not sure if this was an idea that just manifested in my head, but so far, he seems to not be offering much run, so I don’t think we would be losing much in that scenario.

I think if you look at where the majority of those guys are getting there touches now I would be surprised if it isn’t 60m plus from goal. I could be wrong but I would be surprised if it isn’t close to 70%. That’s why the game is so congested now, they are playing so high up the ground, around those wings and through the centre. The difference between the good ones and the ordinary ones is their ability to also hit the scoreboard imo.
My point is mostly about getting Kelly thinking he is going to be hitting up our key forwards and as a result us kicking goals. The statistics tell us otherwise. We would be lucky to see that once every two weeks.
(I’m not saying I wouldn’t be chasing Kelly, I couldn’t think of a better player in the league for our club)
I think he did run and carry more in his first season but perhaps what has changed is not Willo himself but more the role he is being asked to play and the way the team structures up and defends. Perhaps he no longer has license to run and carry or perhaps he is playing deeper so has less opportunity to do so.

Was just looking at the stats for 2020 and Hugh Greenwood is ranked number one for pressure points. Steele is 3rd. Lyons is 6th. We don’t have anyone in top 10 and none of our young mids (except for potentially Setters) can dominate in the pressure acts.
Such mids are not expensive but you need one in your 22 and picking up the likes of Kelly or Crouch or another gun won’t solve for that. Nor will an improved Dow or LOB or Philp or Kemp. Won’t be an expensive pick up but we will need to do either end of this season or next.

I kind of think he replaces Jones as the 2nd KPD.
Yes hes a 3rd tall interceptor but think he can also play key position. He's almost going to need to to have a role in the team.

I think those (rounds 5-8) are seen as good pressure numbers, pretty sure Ed applies a fair bit too.

At his best... a couple of goals every 3 games and just over 20 disposals, around 5 tackles & 4 ducks for a free each game.

Not much, but it's OK to be bringing up names here and for the club to be tyre-kicking.
I don't think The Dogs really trust McLean and I somehow don't think he'd make for a good fit for us. I don't trust him either.
I know we're pretty set in defence at this point, but I wonder what's gone on with Neville Jetta? Was a gun in 2018/2019 but has been dropped again for Round 9... we still don't really have a guy that can exclusively lock down on smalls - Plow does so admirably and Simmo does but its never been his forte.

Philp looks a lively type and despite his stature and size can really apply pressure to the ball receiver. Has the speed to close down his opponent.

Is it worth asking about Luke bruest and Brodie Smith or are they to old. They may be cheap and fill holes in our side.
Foot skills for starters. We need more elite kicks in the midfield. We dont get much reward for effort with the likes of Curnow, Gibbons, Kennedy and to a lesser extent Cripps Murphy and Setters kicking to our forwards. I might also add Mclean is strong above his head and a natural goal kicker.
Man, didn't realise he was 30. Yeah, probably not.
I'd be somewhat happy with Brodie Smith. I'd say he's a slightly better Nic Newman.

Good call, been racking my brain trying to work out who we could get to replicate Dees Bris with Lewis and Hodge, elevated really quickly when they added these types of players. He's tough, good tackler, kicks goals, comes from a successful background, don't know about he's contract status, you'd think where Hawthorns age demographic is at, they could be looking to clear the decks. Worth asking the question.

Connection between midfield and forward. Tackles around a stoppage. Clearances and contested ball. The milking of free kicks. A background of success, including a premiership, so presumably a setting of standards. Midfield goals.
He's also not slow even if he's not quick, either. He's a pickup akin to Devon Smith; someone you get if you want a B-/B+ midfield option who plays more defensively than offensively. He's certainly a better option through a stoppage than Murphy is due to his tackling. Where at the dogs he sits behind 3-6 different players in midfield rotations, with us he'd be one of the first selected after Cripps and Setterfield.
Basically, if you want more (possessions, contested ball, clearances, tackles) he's who you'd go for. Not a single defined thing, but more of everything.

You reckon McLean is getting picked ahead of Walsh and Curnow?

However, we may not need him if the 'more' he would provide comes from within the list. Philp could be a very similar player inside 2 seasons, given the right kind of development.

It's not so much about bringing something we don't have, but rather something that we could have more of, in which case he brings plenty.
Experience, skill, flexibility
He is not a star, but ticks a lot of boxes for us, and would be a more than handy addition at the right price.
