Cheers, I did overlook the shorter quarters but it’s still something I feel is important, I make comparisons to the Eagles defence and I compare him to Rance, he is a fantastic player who is better than a lockdown defender. The role he is playing doesn’t seem to suit his best assets.

That is true, playing as a KPD doesn't always lend to his strengths, but if we did target a pure stopper, Weits doesn't have the speed to play as a 3rd tall

Excuse the intrusion guys have not posted here for a while and catching up on this thread

Watched the Carlton/Pies game again last night (nothing to do or go thanks to covid)

Williams / Papley / Narkle
These 3 players as mentioned are the exact players that Carlton should be targeting and doing everything they can and leaving no stone unturned to get to the club. All 3 players offer exactly what carlton are missing

Papley - Speed / Smarts / Skill / Leader
Williams see above
Narkle electric smart small fwd but can also run through the middle in time

1 thing that seems to be apparent in the carlton team , after half time when pies started coming back and Carlton just went into their shell
The blues really do need some extroverts which the above name players appear to be certainly Papley & Williams.

Good luck against the Giants guys

So it seems that Zac is arguably our no 1 trade priority but I doubt the one player will be enough. We are into Papley and rumoured to be talking to Issac Heeney and we also have De Goey is out of contract. Which of those three would you take first? All three can play in the middle and do damage as medium forwards.

Subject to medical clearance I wouldn't mind Nadia Cockatoo as our specialist back pocket. Will come very cheap given he was a former top 10 pick who hasnt been able to get his body right.

Hate to be the guy to burst your bubble but Heeney and De Goey are no chance of coming to Carlton.

If we're looking at re-signing Betts for another year too, it's highly unlikely Papley will be a target either.

If we can land Williams, we don't need to do much more, especially if list sizes are reduced to 40.

It sounds like we're looking at Williams as a midfielder. If so, our next priority would be a speedy running defender. Adam Saad who's OOC would be a great replacement for Simmo if he was gettable.

2nd/3rd rounder ?

Could be handy, perfect age bracket and could play on a forward flank/pocket as a Betts replacement

McLean plays his better footy more as between the arcs type who can also hit the scoreboard. He's not a small forward.

Heeney
Papley
JDG

Cockatoo is not a specialist back pocket. Not sure he has ever spent time deep in defence.

You could use Parfitt as a back pocket though. Cats have no need to try this, but with his speed, willingness to tackle, foot skills, I feel he would be an elite small defender

Leon Davis made a successful transition

It’s been mentioned that DeGoey has told the filth he wants to stay...
Cockatoo one of the most talented youngsters I’ve seen drafted, classy very quick hard forward/midfielder, has had repeatedly torn hamstrings and leg injuries unfortunately his best AFL days are most likely over...

Same all round strengths and traits as Chris Johnson...

Thanks for your views and agree on what you say
You guys will win it again

Narkle is too hot and cold/flakey for my liking.
We need solid, consistent 22 round (or thereabouts) players every week.

Krooz is finished, like our older players, they may play 1 good game in 4. We need to stop holding onto the past, enough now

Based on his role this year, I can see Krooz as a playing development coach helping out in the 2s and playing the occasional AFL game to support TDK when necessary. Unfortunately, can't say the same for the other oldies...

Is anyone concerned with the role David Teague seems to be playing Weiters? I’m a big Weiters fan and I think he has been playing well, but his output is down, not only from 2019 but 2018 too. The role he is playing now robs the team of his biggest strengths and that was his intercept marking and his disposal.

I think he is being wasted, i don’t see why you would turn a number 1 drafted gun kid in to a lockdown defender, this is not a shot at Jacob as I think he is doing what he’s asked, I just think he could be providing more.

Secondly, either our tall forwards are dumb, our defenders/mids are dumb or our coaches are dumb, the amount of times our players bombed it long to the forward line and have uncontested intercept marks or the ball cleared with ease was really bad, something needs to change and I hope the coaches are aware of it.

On Dow and Polson, you can’t expect young inexperienced players coming up from Mickey mouse scratch matches to be up to speed, let’s give them a few weeks to adapt and then judge.

The Weiters thing is opposition coaching - our coaches/players need to think and work through it

We have an unbalanced list in terms of that 27- 30 year old group. Adding an experienced player would only help with consistency and playing 4 quarters.

GWS have shown you need more that just A graders running around to win a premiership.

Zak Jones is another...
Tell me, what are the effects of time on someone who is 25? What happens when you have 6-15 people who are 24-26, and some of them undergo the effects of time?

GWS have demonstrated what happens when you let your development team force bulk up players too quickly, and then allow ****ing years of rehab/injury mismanagement to prevent quality players staying on the park the whole time.

Build talent within the auspices of the pre-existing list demographics (20-24, 25 at a pinch). Do NOT go older than 27, unless to add a role player for leadership reasons.

You know my thoughts on Parfitt.

Davis was a lot older than 22 when he moved into defence.

I think a key answer to our balance issues is turning McGovern into a key back/interceptor. Seems perfect for that role, reads the play well, great hands and neat skills.

Curnow, McKay, Levi and Silvagni in the forward line.

Jones, Weitering, McGovern as key defence with Marchbank as back up pending his body.

Thoughts?

100% yes. Needs to train as a defender next preseason.

Gov certainly adds more speed and is elite by foot

Then you have to trade Marchy as that is same role he plays down back

We can’t recruit a player via trade and then play them in a position we recruited another player for.

That’s poor list management imo

We desperately need half back/back pocket players that are willing to take the game on with run and carry or elite disposal, Z Williams is this when up and going so I hope we are not bringing him in to use as an extra mid, I would even still look at trying to get Witherden from Bris as well as Williams to bolster our list.

If we manage to hold onto our first round pick I hope we are in a position to still get Grainger Barras as he is an absolute beauty and would sure up our defence with his elite intercept work and speed.

Our midfield is a tough one atm as we have a lot of young talent in this area coming through, obviously an elite outside ball user is a priority but I’m not sure we don’t already have what we need in Obrien, Ramsay, Philp, Cottrell even Kemp is quick enough outside, I really liked the look of having Cottrell on one wing and Walsh on the other as it gave us good balance outside.

Really by next year if we can move Walsh into the centre and replace him with Obrien or Ramsay it gives us a good mix through the middle with Cripps, Setters and Walsh inside and a combination of Cottrell, Obrien and Ramsay on the wings. Add to that group some better drive from defence with Z Williams, Doc and Willo hopefully pushing up to help out and it gives us some good players to attack with and still plenty in reserve in Dow, Kemp, Stocker, SPS, Fish etc.

Yes an extra mature mid would help but with the growth from Setters and Walsh already this year and hopefully we get a continued look at Dow and bring in Obrien at some stage as well, another mid may stifle some growth from within and we could end up losing a player that could well be the one we are looking for long term.
