when i think of targeting a player its a mixture of two things. how good they are as well as how gettable they are. Papley is much more gettable

Not while he has 3 years left on a contract

Ryan could have a nice salary boost from many clubs

Personally I doubt he leaves, but that doesn't stop you putting in a decent offer, which could also put pressure on to release other players

No we can't.

Ryan is from Western Australia, he's playing in a side that are contenders and we will not put forward the type of money that would be enticing enough to persuade him to leave.

Papley is a Melbourne boy. They are both the same age, Paps has kicked more than twice as many goals as Ryan and looks like he wants to leave.

Not to mention the fact that Ryan has been receiving delivery from a high quality midfield compared to the average midfield that Sydney has. Paps still has managed to kick more goals then Ryan this year too.
Yeah but, think about the gushing that would come our way from Brian! Flyin’ Ryan...

Just like Neale being a SA boy and going to the Lions? Or Shiel not leaving GWS and coming to us as a free agent?

You don't sit back thinking a player isn't gettable. If you want him, put a decent offer up, it would also put pressure on to retain other players

Other thing that Ryan does, is being able to play around the ground, stoppages

It's not just about goals and when you consider cost, Ryan is the better proposition

Didn't say he's not gettable. I pointed out how unlikely it was.

Using Neale as an example is a poor one. He was playing for Freo, not an SA team... WA is Ryan home state with family and friends around him. Neale would not have had that playing at Freo.

Shiel is a Victorian, leaving GWS and coming back to Vic makes sense. So he's an even worse example than Neale.

Fact is, Paps is a lot more gettable than Ryan and he leads him in every key statistic over their careers except for marks inside 50 (no surprise given the midfield delivery) and contested marks which is a strength of his game. Paps will cost more, he's contracted but he's better than Ryan as well.

Agree to disagree

I love Ryan but Papley has shown a lot more around the ground too. Has Ryan ever even had over 15 touches in a game?
we would be mad to not ask the question about Ryan, there are probably 100 guys we should be talking to when you really think about it. Someone like Ryan would be on about $300k so I would have no worries us offering double that. In saying that, with where our draft picks lie I imagine he would cost our first with small meaningless change coming back.

Curious as to your reasoning behind this Sir, I can't help but think there is all flash, no substance to Ryan's game.

Least Papley is a solid, known and consistent quantity.

Bit surprised many here have turned off Papley in recent weeks tbh.
I don't believe many have "turned off", it is all about the cost. SOS was prepared to give pick 9 last year with something coming back (second). The absolute
maximum we could/should pay is a mid first rounder.

Ryan plays a better team game, plays his role, especially when you have great tall forwards

Would absolutely waltz in to any side's best 22

And the kicker, a fraction of the price of Papley

As for who is better, in the end that makes no difference, it's cost over value

Just look at Butler

Ryan plays a better team game because he's surrounded by a better team.

Sure he'd go straight into anyone's best 22, he's in the Eagles best 22, one of the contenders for the flag.

He'd cost less, but to entice him to leave we'd have to offer up a significant pay check, the offer you can't refuse type to leave a team that is in it's flag window based in his home state...

Like I said, Paps has proven to be the better player so far. That's a fact, he leads Ryan in every key area apart from contested marks and marks inside 50.

Is Charlie Constable worth pursuing ?

Would absolutely target Liam Ryan over Papley, every day of the week
You would have more chance of getting Dusty out of Richmond

Flyin Ryan wont move anywhere , Loves the eagles and would take massive unders to stay there ( I have a client thats his sponsor and meets with him for coffee once a week) Very loyal guy apparently

same thing every year - plays well and is victorian? target - plays well against us? target - suits our needs? target - gets dropped? target - once rode on a melbourne tram? target - is a club's best player? target - had a good game last round? target - finally came good after 8 years of mediocrity? target........

Papley is a top 10 pick every day of the week with nothing back, Currently Blues look like having Pick 7/8 in a compromised draft
He is easily worth that he is 24 years old and has 8-9 year as a fully developed player and you know what you are getting compared to a young 18 year old with no games this year taking 3-4 years to develop 'if he's any good'

I compare Papley to our trading of Dion Prestia who was 1 year older. Jump at that trade every day

Do I have to? Don't usually look back, but what an opportunity missed. We would be set, came cheap and for our forward mix
would be equally as valuable as Papley. Paps can play more as a target, but doesn't need to in our group (when fit). Crumbing,
connecting and harassing is what we need.

We are only one quality mid away from playing finals next year, as most of our improvement will come from within

Dow has always concerned me, but will improve, it'smid or bust. LOB isn't an inside mid, he will add to our wings where he will be used as a 2 way runner/finisher

Where our greatest improvement will come, will be the likes of Kemp, Stocker, Philp, Ramsay, Honey, they all have point of difference

SPS needs to go back to the middle now

Fisher needs to be used in a Gresham type role

Extremely optimistic.
At least 2 quality mids
Cripps could be cooked and Ed will be 30 so there some minuses
The players you mentioned are kids and a few years away from permanency in the midfield.
Need a couple of run and carry defenders
Then there is the issues with our coaching: no plan b, premiership experience, can't get the boys up to go over the top in key games.

you come over here with your tasty trade ideas and clarity of thought......

I don't get this gettable Papley thing. Last year we didn't get him and this year he is still contracted and their best player. The only thing we are going to get....is bent over

Well i came here few years ago and said you guys should look at a kid that cant get a game and on our rookie list Jayden Short - I got told F off

After 2 years i came and mentioned you guys should have a look at another young kid that couldnt get a game on our rookie list - Liam Baker again got told

Last year i thought why not try again maybe they will be nicer so i said you guys should take 2 players for free - Brandon Ellis & Dan Butler
You guessed it got told again

After coming here for 10 year still getting told

Got told by who?
Wont mention who but there are 3-4 here that have joined in the last 4-5 years that believe i am trolling you guys here by being nice but bagging carlton on other boards,But when i asked which posts they dont reply.

Parrott and i used to have some beauties and she got me many many times but i always respected the way she stitched people up and baited them and she was the best. But yeah been coming here for over 10 years

Only boards im banned on is Brisbane " Raines isnt good enough to tag dusty' = Life time Ban

Pies have only won 2 flags in over 60 year = Life time ban on pies board (and that was on the main board but i still got banned)

Williams will do, let's start there

In all seriousness, I am confident the likes of Setters, Walsh, Fisher, SPS, will continue to improve. Dow and LOB too

Stocker has all the traits and Kemp is on another level again

Philp has strong AFL qualities

Unproven, sure, but the likes of Murphy aren't going to improve, so the transition will come quickly now

Its going to be exciting times. I cant remember in the past 25 years another time when we have had an obvious changing of the guard looming AND we are prepared for it with talent. Whether Dow becomes a star or just a good ordinary player- who knows but he probably doesnt have to be. Cripps, Walsh , Setterfield, stocker/kemp +- SPS Dow Fish Cunners
