The biggest problem IMO is we rewarded Betts for his efforts in his early years with the contract extension, when instead we should have let it play out and paid the extra to keep Cameron.

that's what we do though. We reward senior players heading towards their 30s with contracts for deeds done, not expected forward value. Then when kids are being offered future value contracts elsewhere, we can't match because our money is tied up in seniors in their twilight years.

We once had a loose rule that at 28/29/30 years of age you got a max one year contract.
We jumped the shark when FA came along..
5 years for any player 27 or over is madness IMO. The way the VFL is now set up, 30 and your done if you make it that far.
