"Other players have cash in the bank and others are basically living paycheck to paycheck, like a lot of Australia. " - Isaac Smith

They might have investment houses that they need to make repayments on, people could have family issues that they need the money to pay for them to get through.” - Tom Rockliff

“There’s going to be people in the AFL world, especially players, that are going to have to put up their houses for sale because of this situation and we’re just like everyone else.” - Jake Lever

Boy oh boy, wowee. These blokes really do live in a bubble.

Some may have to sell one of their investment properties - ScoMo, what are you doing for these poor buggers

Its like we are living in Zoolander

NRL way ahead of AFL. Both the competition and the players association apparently pushing for a flat payment amount to all players, regardless of their previous contract amount.

The blues have severed ties with the VFL northern blues/bullants due to corvid19 cost cutting.

the bullants are reportedly very happy they are rid of Carlton*

*may or may not be true
Patrick Cripps has requested a trade to the Bullants for 2021

They are offering the player $3k/m, so effectively $72k/year

How does that compare with what the government is offering?

It's going to be a struggle for them with huge mortgages, but once they get out of the bubble and realise that's how the average Australian is living everyday of the year, they'll be right.

They can apply for a mortgage suspension from banks like anyone else. Most banks have said they'll stop payment for 6 months if needed.

if the last couple of days are a sign of things to come, current measures might be working. Will be interesting as more of the general population are tested regardless of contact history. Still hopeful the worst case won’t eventuate.

I dont think we will see the level of deaths weve seen in Europe and China, but the levels of infected will go up pretty quick as testing rules are relaxed

The AFL might be tempted to double down on their expansion strategy if the NRL is in even more trouble than the AFL are.

I know they are a drain on the competition but I'd probably rather GC and GWS survive than a couple of the less supported Melbourne teams. Would get us a lot closer to a national competition than if they were to go, leaving us with just 1 team in those states and still the 10 in Melbourne.

They ABSOLUTELY WON'T skip the normal safety protocols and neither should they.

They need to make sure they save lives, not cost them.

One word: Thalidomide
No disrespect, but that's a ridiculously dumb comment.

These aren't new drugs. We understand what they do to the body. We don't know what they do to the virus.

And never has there been an illness met with such a simultaneous international show of resources. They're not going to get tied up in incessant bureaucracy.

Nothing will change. All the players will stay where they are. I think after May/June the virus will be completely controlled in Australia. Other parts of the world not so much. The hysteria in Australia is quite unfounded. As I have heard quite a lot of professional commentary that there is no exponential case growth virtually no community transmission. The increasing number of cases in Australia is wholly fueled by returning travelers still coming home.
Any evidence you want to post?

Adelaide has slowed over the last 4 days. Not sure that's true anywhere else.

I wouldnt mind a merger with Port

We use the AFC red gold blue colours and use the Adelaide from Port Adelaide
I know you're joking, but ...

Red, gold, teal and black and the Southern Crows?

I'd support it.

No one will want to go and watch these selfish brats more to the point
Of course they will.

The players and the jerseys ARE the game.

I think they should take more of a haircut - but the AFL signed these contracts with guarantees in them

There's a bunch of players on $75k. Of course they're living paycheck to paycheck.

Reported this morning by some Gov Minister that 2/3'ds of infected cases are from returning travelers. The rest of infected cases are those that have had contact with returning travelers.....small number are from transmission to others.

Those returning now do not have the option of self quarantine, they will be quarantined by government officials for 14 days.

there should not be a single listed AFL player who is living paycheck to paycheck

What a crock

Even the smallest rookie contract is $60k?

Unless they've been on a rookie contract for less than two years there is no way that any AFL footballer should be close to getting f’ed from this right now
Are you serious?

$60k is **** all. That's clearing maybe $750 a week. Rent is probably $500 of that.

This is actually a big step forward.

On a $60k salary with no student debt you'd be taking home over $900 a week. And why would you rent a $500 p/wk property on that sort of salary? That's financially irresponsible regardless of a virus situation

You're kidding me arent you ??

Why would you pay $500 a week rent if you're earning $750.

Most rookies either live with a host family or with housemates anyway.

I had to eventually sell 2 investment properties after the oil price crash in 2014. Post GFC I was only picking up contract work and struggled to hang on to them for 6 years. The oil price crash was the final straw.

No work, and no foreseeable work for at least 12-18 months.

There wasn’t much sympathy for me or people like me at the time.

I feel for the players and their futures, but sometimes “sh*t happens”

The difference is that I was in my late 40’s at the time. These players have far more of their working lives left to recover

Intuition, so you’d need to go inside my brain to feel what I feel.
It’s not very scientific but I like it.
