Draft Review 2020 - Revisit the 2020 AFL Draft

Yep I have no idea why he got past North.

Adelaide I understand. Thilthorpe reminds me of Lynch and is a local boy.

but why did North pass on him when they had just given B Brown the boot?

it’s so bloody hard to build a decent spine. There no talls of L McDonalds caibre in next years draft.

That and North didn’t even take the best midfielder available in Holland’s or bid on the best academy mid product(Campbell) when seeking a mid. (Phillips is a handy looking talent, but if there was one that might slide I thought it might be him...)

The emphasis around a spine being difficult to build is way overstated. I can only assume that you are taking Dodoro's comments and regurgitating them as your own. A spine doesn't need to be built with first round draft picks. Perhaps even to justify your own clubs selections, who I believe went far too tall/high risk.

The perception that North needed to replace Brown with an 18 year old kid KPF is just lazy analysis. McDonald will be a good player, but without a great midfield his influence would be minimal IMO. With the added risk of KPF's taken early that don't pay off, who on earth could justify taking that risk in Y1 of a rebuild? Sure, it's great if it pays off and we get an AA KPF, but what if it doesn't?

North instead took 2 out of the 3 best pure midfielders in the draft. It's long been a problem area for us. We have had a star forward in the past, but it's pretty clear from our success (or lack there of) during Browns big goal kicking years, that without a great midfield, they can only get you so far.

For what it's worth, Nick Larkey, 22 years old, pick 73 - has looked extremely promising. North also used their first selection last year on Charlie Comben, 19 years old, pick 30 - who is rated very high internally.

If one or both of these players don't develop as expected, expect us to hit FA for a KPF in 2-3 years time.

Who knows me may even nab a forward at mid season draft after more exposed form if comben etc have injury issues. I'd be comfortable with that

Key forwards with an early pick can be very high risk/high reward. Sam Day pick 3, Schache pick 2, Watts, Patton, Boyd and McCartin pick 1. None of them really came off.
North went with the low risk/medium to high return strategy

[Stephenson] averages 2.4 tackles and 1.1 one percenters across his short career.

Compared to the best small forwards in the game

Michael Walters = 2.8 tackles, no 1 % stats
Charlie Cameron = 3.1 tackles and 0.9 1%s
Eddie Betts = 3.1 tackles, no 1 % stats
Tom Papley = 3.1 tackles, 1.0 1%s
You don't rate dual All-Australian, Luke Breust as one of the best small forwards in the AFL?

Betts__ 613 goals (avg 1.85), 305 assists (avg 0.92)
Breust_ 408 goals (avg 1.85), 199 assists (avg 0.90)
Walters. 276 goals (avg 1.67), 125 assists (avg 0.76)
Cameron 192 goals (avg 1.51), .83 assists (avg 0.65)
Greene._ 183 goals (avg 1.16) 112 assists (avg 0.71)
Papley__ 146 goals (avg 1.47), .70 assists (avg 0.71)

Breust averages 3.95 tackles and 1.02 one-percenters over his career which is substantially more than those other guys you listed.
He copped a broken jaw this season which is why he missed games and kicked below his usual quota of goals

Fair point. The focus was more about Stephenson as opposed to the other players. Breust is an out and out gun no doubt.

I didnt realise the kid from Temora has over 400 goals! What a career

I also looked at the small forwards' stats for the past 3 seasons only (Jaidyn Stephenson's time at Collingwood)

Cameron and Breust clearly lead the way, but Stephenson ranks up there with the others

Small Forwards 2018-2020
Cameron._ 105 goals (avg 1.94) 30 assists (avg 0.55) 118 tackles (avg 2.2)
Breust.___ 104 goals (avg 1.76) 49 assists (avg 0.83) 235 tackles (avg 4.0)
Papley.____ 87 goals (avg 1.47) 41 assists (avg 0.70) 149 tackles (avg 2.5)
Betts._____ 79 goals (avg 1.46) 40 assists (avg 0.74) 143 tackles (avg 2.6)
Walters..___ 77 goals (avg 1.43) 35 assists (avg 0.65) 177 tackles (avg 3.3)
Ryan______ 76 goals (avg 1.38) 39 assists (avg 0.71) 108 tackles (avg 2.0)
Stephenson. 76 goals (avg 1.41) 31 assists (avg 0.57) 129 tackles (avg 2.4)
Greene..___ 60 goals (avg 1.46) 29 assists (avg 0.71) _91 tackles (avg 2.2)

If you look at all the numbers, then it's hard to go past Breust as statistically the best small forward of the past 3 seasons. He is such a quiet achiever. Despite his high productivity, he is consistently underrated by all and sundry. Probably because he is team-oriented and does the fundamentals, rather than always trying to kick the goal of the day, or constantly flying for the mark of the year.

I know Bruest is small and a forward but is he a "small forward" as to me he sort of plays like a short full forward. I could be wrong though.
WTF? Breust is a classic roving, crumbing half forward. He is usually running onto the ball towards goal for the vast majority of his snaps at goal or marks inside fifty. Very rarely leading out from full forward and playing as a hit-up target. He has almost double the number of tackles compared to other small forwards which would indicate he spends more time up the ground, closer to the action and further away from the goals than the others who are left alone lurking inside fifty.

Butler played a similar role for St Kilda this year.

Tom Papley was the small forward who played more like a full forward in 2020 with Buddy sidelined and team-mates looking for him and trying to pass it his way whenever they went forward.

In previous years, Eddie Betts played like a full forward for the Crows - they would isolate him up forward, virtually alone close to goal.
Sort of a small full forward like Stephen Milne at St Kilda, or Mark LeCras used to be for the Eagles.

North got the player they wanted, why should they care what 16 other clubs think? They literally have fixed their midfield division in one draft.
This can not be said enough.

We have had some great individuals run through the midfield for the last 20 years, but never a complete group.

The last two drafts have hopefully fixed that problem.
Whilst we have often had good attack and defence, it has been let down by service from the engine room.

I can’t believe Eddie is still 4th for goals, not to mention 2nd for assists and 3rd for tackles. I guess we’ll be keeping him until something better comes along. Can’t say we haven’t tried with Durdin.

Out of curiosity, what is the biggest haul of goals Breust has kicked?

Eddie has been fantastic, but his 2020 showed he’s on the decline. I was surprised he got another year, but there may not be a better alternative on the Carlton list at the moment.

I think hawthorn had it right. DGB will be the pick of this draft.

I don’t think the midfielders with the exception of maybe Campbell or Hollands will be that good.
Neither of those are guaranteed midfielders at afl level but keep going.
I think Phillips is nailed on as a pick as is DGB.

As long as you ignore the trading ban, and the fact the Swans have the worst training facilities in the competition.
