On the Couch did a premiership profile check and we missed out. To have a premiership profile you need to be top 5 in 3 of 5 key categories:

1 Points from turnover differential
2 Points from forward half
3 Points from back half
4 Opposition scores per inside 50
5 Post clearance contested possession differential.

We only got a tick for 5. Does anyone know how far off top 4 in 1,2,3 and 4 we are? Janus?
This was the graphic they put up. A tick is have been top 5 in the league the last 6 weeks in these categories.

1. I have heard in game commentators say we have a bad result for turnovers scores by oppo.

2. We spend a lot of time in forward half but aren't great scorers for the amount of possession there. This was the graphic they put up after the Richmond game and I put in the Geelong preview thread. I suspect the Geelong game pushed us just outside the top 5 in this 2nd category We have a cushy draw to come so a few of these should improve.

3. Once again the ball spends more time in our forward half ie forward of centre line not 50m arc so we will be lower than most clubs in this stat unless we have about 170%. Once again playing the weaker sides in the last 5 games will see that increase.

4. Our stupid over high press from our defenders sees oppo get too many easy goals and scores, especially on counter attack. Richmond had kicked 11.6 from 22 inside 50 at 3/4 time and end up with the same score from 24 I50's.

I would be concerned about 1 and 4.

2 and 3 are just reflective of the way we play and no big deal IMO.

Reckon 2 and 3 will fix themselves up after playing the 15th, 16th and 17th sides.

The second graphic with Ken contradicts the first- if we are #3 for scores from forward half turnovers and #3 for scores from forward half stoppages, how can we not be in the top 5 for forward half scores? How else do you get the ball in the forward half?

They are all reflective of the way we play.

We'll tick every single box except for opponent score per inside 50 by the end of the year. And we're still second for least opponent points per game after playing all the other teams mentioned, so who cares about opposition score from inside 50s? We have 11.1 more inside 50s per game than our opponents. Brisbane has 8.1, Richmond has 6.4, Geelong has 3.4, St Kilda has 0.5 and West Coast has 0.5.

Also, we're 4th for points scored, 2nd for points against, 1st for inside 50s, 2nd least opposition inside 50s, 1st for tackles inside 50 and 2nd for goal assists, having played every team in the top six and getting touched up by Geelong and Brisbane.

maybe.

If we are such a dominate front half team, then we aren't going to improve our scores from back half if we are playing a lot of bottom teams, especially if we let them score easily per their minimal inside 50's. We might jump ahead of teams who are higher up but haven't played many of the good teams and end up losing that stat by plenty in the next 5 games. But not knowing what the numbers are nobody can make that call with any confidence.

In the Boak renaissance thread I put up some stats AFL media put up about Boak and where he ranked at Port by category. Metres Gained he was 5th which made me look up who is ahead of him and how that compares with the rest of the AFL. Tried to list by 10m decreases less than 400m per game average.

Surprised Brodie Smith is 1st, I haven't watched all their games though.
Lukosius with 799 metres gained in one game is madness.

Interesting article - some key take outs (admittedly only in the metrics they provide):

  • We were the best ball winning team 2019 and we're still #1
  • Went from #3 to #1 in pressure per minute of oppo possession
  • Ball movement stats pretty similar to 2019
  • Scoring power has stayed about the same but last year that was the 12th best side, this season everyone else has declined and we sit at #4
In a game of small margins, maintaining strengths and making incremental improvements in other areas has made a huge difference to outcomes, at least over the minor round.

Think i heard a stat mentioned on Thursday nights game that we are the #1 long kicking team in the comp? Looking at those individual stats we didn't have many players in the top 50 compared to richmond for example

Anyone know where to find those historical stats on finals games results based on rankings?
Ie. 1 v 4 is 75% v 25%, etc

Remember seeing a table pre-finals but can't find it again.
