A few thoughts re. the discussion here tonight:
For everyone on here - rightly or wrongly, some of the players we've pumped up, have just been absolute flops. Fogarty, Taheny, Clark, Kennerley all come to mind as draft 'steals' in recent years (that most of us here liked) - and they all failed massively.
I do think that this year is very unique, in the fact that teams seem to have gone very homegrown in their picks. Look at both WA clubs. Literally every kid picked was from WA. Richmond and Hawks, pretty much every kid was local except Serong.
People are forgetting that lockdowns have prevented clubs from travelling around as much as they could, so the best talent that they can identify, is the one that they have the most exposure to.
I also think, that Wells and co. have seriously had a gutful of the whole 'go home' BS we've copped the last few years, and as a result, we've picked kids from our own neighbourhood who we know will stick around if we put the time into them.
Let's also not forget that quarantine also prevented people leaving Melbourne/Geelong/Bendigo/Ballarat etc. for long periods of this year, so even locally, there wasn't that same ability to go and watch talent as there would be in normal years (clubs didn't pick anyone from down our way either).
Not every draft is going to go smoothly or how we want it, but in Taylor not being taken tonight, nearly every team passed over him - sometimes more than once - in favour of other players. As much as I love what I've seen, there's a reason so many clubs didn't rate him either.
I then juxtapose that with Holmes who we took last year, and then Evans the year before - who I collectively lost my sh*t over that we didn't draft players I saw as better in that range (Fin Macrae as an example last year) - and I was deadset wrong about both of them. Holmes became probably my most loved first year player since Sel - he was just that good to watch from the get go (and an awesome kid to boot).
Then I think of Clark who I couldn't believe we got, and I wanted more than anyone in 2018. We got him, and he was really decent for his first 17 games...then injury struck and he started getting very sooky when he was left out of our 2019 finals side..and was then shocked again he wasn't automatically picked in 2020.
As much as I love a good melt, I also move on very quickly and it's more done in jest, than anything else. COVID has ruined talent ID, and there are so few here that know players inside out. I do think, however, that both sides could use a bit of clarity when checking their attitudes on this board.
On the one hand, there are some huge overreactions from those who have very little actual insight into every single iota of a prospective player's skillset, persona and talent base - when compared to the amount of info AFL recruiting teams have.
On the other hand, this is a discussion forum, and people have players they like and get attached to - for whatever reason. If someone cracks it but doesn't insult anyone else on the board, then it's not for you to tell them off and point out how they 'know nothing' just because they're not 'experts.' People are allowed to vent and have different opinions - and we're probably all wrong when it all comes down to it.
Just relax, get your point across, have a melt for a little bit or just shoot the sh*t - but don't let it drag on when all of us here just want to see the best for our club.
That's enough draft drama for me for one night, bring on the rookie draft tomorrow!

As we do need to look at our key forward once Hawkins is gone as Esava is no guarantee his going to make it.
Id have more faith in Neale than Easava, but my biggest problem with Neale is " Home Sickness " and wanting to move back to WA

Has been invited to the VFL but apparently is miles off the physical requirements
I suppose a good pre-season could fix it....
But with the rookie spot we do need to look at a key forward, as like I said I don't want to loose neale but home sickness could come in to play.
As im more convinced that Esava won't make it than will make it
I'd throw a ball at the Stumps with Gillett with our last Rookie pick. He must have footy IQ, and ability to find the goals. He might be okay as a stay home full forward goal square hog.

I actually really like knevitt i know he polarises people on here but im much more bullish than most on him hes exactly what our midfield needs and i think he will be very good.
Weve been complaining for years that the club doesnt invest enough in our ruck stocks so i cant complain that weve finally spent a high pick on one and i do think conway has real potential. My only query is if we could have taken sonsie and got conway through to the willis pick but we will never know what clubs would have taken conway where. I didnt expect willis to go that early and im a little sad we didnt take zac taylor but im a willis fan..hes a real powerful burst player as is cooper whyte who im really pleased to see get a go. Its nice to see we focused on mids with burst speed and good tanks as we can all agree our team lacks legspeed and it limits our gameplan options.
Get me a key defender in the rookie draft (hopefully schlensog) and i think weve done quite well.

I don't think that's how it works.
We would have bid on Gulden knowing there was about a 90% chance Swans were going to match. We clearly rated him and it's a throw at the stumps with no consequences.
After they matched, we simply went to the next player in our rankings in Neale.
Odds are we weren't actually drafting for need but simply best available, and that was Neale according to our talent evaluation.
Clubs don't just 'mistake' picks. When a player they want is selected before their pick they simply pick the next best available talent according to their intel.

Hes a chance although i think thats the role knevitt might start in initially before he becomes a full time mid. I think we need a key defender more although getting a ruck does allow us to permanently settle sdek as a key back and maybe use tsapa in that role also.

Liking this more and more but naturally time will tell. Am assuming Schlensog is one of the 2 rookies and I cant believe we got a F3 from Collingwood so they could screw Freo - here’s to you Bell ! So next year we have round one and two plus 3 third rounders - so really good flexibility there. Actually loving the 3 Falcons boys having playing time together but am really loving the Max Rooke twins, Willis and Kroger. Think Willis is my new fav.

I think it's really going to be interesting how picks turn out the next few years with Covid and lack of exposure. I think there are going to be a lot more Sam Mitchell at 40 types than usual. I also think there will be a lot more first round duds that were overrated just cos they were exposed.
I'm happy with our picks and hopefully we've done good but will take time.
