Willis, Kroeger and Whyte all seem like good throws at the stumps with later picks. The explosive players are usually the late risers in the draft and if they can't play they can't rise. If we can get 1 of the 3 to become a starting midfielder we would have done well.

Going be interesting esp with 2 seasons of Covid who going to make the cut .

Both WA teams took local guys .
Sure they played more .

But who knows on the long term.

Draper has the potential to make Wells look very stupid if he develops. High level talent. Was good against WA and has played league football. Showed a lot more than Willis in the U18s and is not a man child which suggests has more development in him. Can mark, is quick and is great on the inside. Only question marks are his endurance. Will be interesting to follow as I can see him playing next year

Arlo draper could make a lot of recruiters look silly.
We were one of many that passed up on him. The idea that all the recruiters that passed on Draper could have egg on their faces because the HSun, Knightmare, Cal Twomey and a few media types rated him higher is crazy. Even Adelaide passed at 36 and 43 for a local lad they had been linked to heavily.

Every year we melt because we select a player who was "rumoured" to go much later.
Using that logic if we took Draper with 24, missing out on conway or knevitt - bigfooty would have been wrapped that we got a slider. In reality, we would have selected a bloke who was not otherwise going to be selected until the mid 40's.

Same for the Willis selection.
Roberts, Taylor, Draper, Warner all available and yet on our draft board for mids, we clearly rated Willis as having more upside, suiting our needs better and overall we just rated him higher. Regardless of what the phantom drafts would suggest.

EDIT: That sounded aggressive, I absolutely felt the same about passing on draper but do feel the need to remind myself that wells doesn't pluck them out of a hat. would have seen heaps of draper and a lot more of willis than I have. The draper one is so interesting as everyone passed. I guess my point was that if Cal Twomey had draper going mid 40's in the phantom draft then most people wouldn't blink an eye or would have melted if we took him at 24.

I'd throw a ball at the Stumps with Gillett with our last Rookie pick. He must have footy IQ, and ability to find the goals. He might be okay as a stay home full forward goal square hog.

Don't disagree but the stay at home FF is extinct now - even Tom covers over 10kms every game now.

Overall I feel pretty good about what we've done.

Re-watched the academy game and really liked how Conway moved. He pushes back super hard, looked to compete at ground level and lead up to the footy when pushed forward. Obviously was monstered a little by Fort, but you would have to expect that. We have wanted a number 1 ruck for so long, in the end we have taken the best ruck in the draft, a local lad and by all reports a really good hard working personality.

Knevitt too. He has pace, great endurance, is strong overhead and can play fwd. or back.
I like that the cats would have had a lot of exposure to these boys, wanted them and traded up to make sure they got both.

Willis and Kroeger seem to be needs based and I back Wells with these selections. Wells has an excellent record with picks from the mid twenties on. He chooses players that can play a role in our side and he usually picks the lights out with these selections. These two add a little stoppage grunt, some pace on from the inside out and look solid enough to play from the get go. Kroeger looked comfortable coming off half back too so that versatility will be handy and willis was talked up for hitting the scoreboard from midfield. We were linked to sheldrick, and my gut feel is that we had these two on our boards as offering something similar.

Cooper Whyte is a great late pick. Will have some synergy with Knevitt and Conway and by all reports has a bit of flair, class and importantly speed.

Need to add some key position depth this afternoon - hopefully a Schlensog or dean and then I'm really happy with what the club has done.

We will play more youth next year and I'm super excited to see it.

Small Defenders:
Best 22: Touhy, Bews
Youth: Kroeger, Mullin, Stevens
Depth: Zuthrie, Atkins

Medium/Tall Defenders:
Best 22: Blicavs, Henry, Stewart, SDK
Depth: Kolo, Schlensog, Dean or Morrison hopefully. Neale or Rohan as options.

Midfield:
Best 22. Dangerfield, Guthrie, Selwood, Duncan, Parfitt, Smith
Youth: Stephens, Knevitt, Kroeger, Willis, Whyte
Depth: Narkle, Simpson, Menegola, Higgins

Small Forwards:
Best 22: Close, Stengle, Miers
Youth: see above + Evans
Depth: Dalhaus, Higgins

Medium/Tall Forwards:
Best 22: Hawkins, Cameron, Dangerfield
Youth: Neale, Knevitt, Ratagolea
Depth: Rohan, Ceglar.

Rucks:
Best 22: Stanley/Ceglar
Youth: Conway, Tsap, Neale
Depth: Stanley/Ceglar

Players in the depth sections really have to have a crack at making it into the best 22 by the end of this year or they risk being overtaken. Players like Narkle, Simpson, Zuthrie, Atkins, Kolo, Rohan are playing for their futures this year. Higgins and Dal definitely last years. Would love to be writing this list again at the end of next year with lots jumping from the youth section to the best 22 like close, miers, henry, parfitt have.

To put drafting into perspective outside the top 10 picks 30% of draftees play a senior game that is 1.5 out of 5 players. The average AFL career of draftees is 30 games, 3,9 years. I think Wells selections would stack up well over the journey. Hope all of last night’s haul end up champions and forge long careers

Where did you gets your ‘facts’ from? National draft …. percentage of players outside top-10 to
play a senior game:

2015: 54/60 = 90%
2016: 59/67 = 88%
2017: 61/68 = 90%
2018: 51/68 = 75%
2019: 44/55 = 80%

There’s still be a few players from 2018 and 2019 who will make their debut.

So not sure who gave you the 30% number but it’s wildly inaccurate. (Www.footywire.com and click on ‘AFL draft’)

What only Wells?? what of the other dozen recruiters out there??
How did he interview?? Did he have any personal baggage??
We are a Character First Club. Maybe he couldn't get past our first hurdle?? Maybe??

The couple of interviews I’ve seen of him let’s just say weren’t exactly great. Has a healthy opinion of himself…
Sounds like the Jordan Clark issue

I know for a fact Clark interviewed very very well and was seen as a future leader during his time in the WAFL pre draft.
