Hi guys,

the live Draft thread is now open here.

This draft zone between Brisbane and Gold Coast has to go. If it doesn't, Gold Coast will never grow, their area doesn't have enough talent to support their club. It's great that Charlie Rowbottom has decided to travel up north and the alliance they have with NT Thunder help, but more is needed. Since the Geelong and Melbourne zones have been abolished, why not the Gold Coast and Brisbane?

It takes less time to travel to the Gold Coast from Brisbane than it does from Geelong to Melbourne. Granted there is talent outside of Brisbane further north, however, there are players that live in Warangatta that play for Geelong (a 3 and half hour drive). There are many girls that sacrifice to make the move, we even have players coming all the way from Ireland and the USA to compete. An hour drive between two cities should not warrant two separate draft pools.
Do you actually know where and how big each of the zones are?

Do you actually know why there are zones for each club?

I don’t believe you would get either club, or their fans to agree to this.

Campbell looks more and more like a steal for the Dogs/ Dees everyday, reckon she'll be a serious player with the potential to become a genuine midfielder with her athleticism, also really like Sherar and would take her higher if I had picks.
I'm not sure if we're getting a Vic combine and I'm not sure if Campbell will participate (Grant didn't), but I'd love to see what her vertical leap numbers are. I was a little surprised she wasn't there when I went back and checked the preseason top-10. Also a little surprised that Craven was in there. Not at all surprised to see Featherston up there. A bit surprised to see her in the first round of your phantom, but I'm not going to argue with it. I've been wondering if somebody might take her and try and turn her into an intercept defender, given the insane vertical. I expect she'll do a lot less rucking at the next level.

Sherar was another I am/was expecting big things from at the combine, more for speed though.

Consistency, production and contested game are all areas for improvement for [Appleby], as well getting some penetration on her kicks. Top line speed can't be doubted though

I don't have a problem with her kicking, but I'd love to see her run as hard defensively as she does when she's got the ball. Still, I'll be quite surprised if she's there for the Saints third pick. Even moreso if she's available the pick after.

rushed one I threw together just before but I think the ranges for girls are about right. It's much harder to do a girls phantom than a boys dammit!

Hi, Bangers. Just curious about the Tassis VFLW talent. Can we confirm that Meagan Kiely and Sarah Skinner have been nominated for the Tasmanian/North Melbourne pool?

Unsure on Kiely, fairly confident Skinner has though

I'm not sure Kiely can. It says on the official website that you must reside in Tasmania to nominate there and, while they've been flying Skinner in, I think Kiely's based in Vic.

So one of the contenders for this year's VFLW B&F is up for grabs. I know Georgia Nanscawen is still the favourite but Keily's still a big chance. She may go higher in the draft than we think.

That leaves Kim Rennie. Where doe she sit in the draft? Most Victorian teams are looking for backup rucks.

I was thinking Kiely would be in the mix for North's second pick. Any higher than that and she's in the first round! Probably more likely with their third or fourth, depending on where they choose to take Rennie.

For Rennie, if they're not confident of getting her with their fourth, then probably their third. I don't think anybody is going to jump in and grab her knowing she wants to get to North. The picks in between North's second and third are all Dogs and Blues. At the very least, surely the Bulldogs don't waste a second round pick on a mediocre ruck that doesn't want to be there. I feel like Borg would be more likely for the Blues if they want to take a ruck there.

Looking at the provisional draft picks spread sheet at the top of the page, surely most clubs don’t have that many roster spots to fill?

I know Brisbane had a few retirements, but I didn’t know it was league wide.

From the little I had read, I thought it was a shallow Victorian pool this year?

I don't know about list spots, I'm pretty sure Suns only have 3 or 4 if they sign their two mature agers they're allowed to and I know GWS will have one pick after the current order, but I'm not great for tracking this stuff so I'm close to the worst person to ask

As for Vic pool, it's essentially

S+ Tier: Georgie Prespakis (Rowbottom too for a moment)
S Tier: Slender, Friend, Reid (maybe Craven too)
then the next 15 or so are pretty close together, not sure if you'd call it shallow but I don't think it's got the star power of last years top end, but with more clubs hopefully open to taking Country girls there should be a good chunk of handy players at the next level. If we see clubs hesitant to take Country girls again though it'll be a poor crop

How deep does the talent go beyond the top 20 for Vic?

I might be wrong, and confused shallow for top end talent with shallow depth overall.

I'm bullish on it, especially with some good 19-year-olds available after missing out on last year (I'll ping Pie 4 Life because he's got some he's all over) and some decent role type players/ development prospects. I think the fact someone like Appleby or Eliza James who are both really athletic with good footy brains/ skills (just lacking consistency at times) are being seen by amateur watchers (even if there is only a couple) is a great sign for the increasing quality. I also admittedly am unsure on most of it having not followed girls too closely before, so I may be approaching it with a mindset that doesn't quite match recruitment trends

I posted what picks teams should have a couple of pages back, based on what the official site has said in terms of re-signings, delistings etc:
Adelaide: 17, 20, 34 (SA 1-3)
Brisbane: 18, 35, 46, 53, 57 (QLD 4, 6, 7, 8, 9)
Carlton: 10, 11, 23, 26, 29 (VIC 6, 7, 14, 16, 23)
Collingwood: 29, 32, 33 (VIC 19, 20, 21)
Fremantle: 12, 31, 38, 44, 52, 58 (WA 2, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11)
Geelong: 2, 7, 9, 15 (VIC 1, 4, 5, 10)
Gold Coast: 1, 6, 8, 30 (QLD 1, 2, 3, 5)
GWS: 37, 49, 55, 59, 60, 61 (NSW 1-6)
Melbourne: 41, 42, 45 (VIC 24, 25, 27)
North Melbourne: 13, 19, 28, 43, 51, 56 (VIC 9, 12, 18, 26, 30, 32)
Richmond: 5, 16, 48, 50, 54 (VIC 3, 11, 28, 29, 31)
St Kilda: 4, 12, 36 (VIC 2, 8, 22)
West Coast: 3, 21, 24, 40, 47 (WA 1, 3, 4, 7, 9)
Western Bulldogs: 19, 25, 27 (VIC 13, 15, 17)
That's me assuming Geelong sign two mature-agers and GC sign none. If GC sign somebody, that gets rid of pick 30. If Geelong don't sign players, they'll have picks 47 and 55 added in.

I believe they'll confirm that on Wednesday, assuming no rookies are signed or players placed on inactive lists in the interim.

Half the teams are taking the minimum picks to the draft. I think that backs up the idea that it's not the deepest pool we've had. Melbourne's list manager said they'd expect McNamara would have gone much higher in this year's pool and the Dog's list manager said they thought there was a big dropoff after about 5 (and that was before Rowbottom had nominated QLD). North's got six picks, but I think 2 will be Tasmanians. I think there's a decent number of talls in the pool and some good wingers, but if you're looking for an A-grade inside mid, you'd want to be picking early.

I think there's value in the Victorian pool if the teams are able to pick it up. It does thin out after the top 20, and even when doing my rankings after the first say 23-25 I think it was, there was not many I would guarantee to pick up, particularly from a top-age perspective.

The most fascinating aspect for me will be some of the mature-agers (even 19YOs) with expansion coming in. Some teams might be keen to take a longer-term talent (knowing they can sign for a year than extend) than be aware the expansion teams (in this case obviously referring to Bombers/Hawks) can pluck the eyes out of any mature-age talent still around.

I get there feeling there will be some clubs that take a VFLW player with their last pick, and those with later selections may well look to more experience for a couple. The Bulldogs/Magpies/Dees are those with later selections, whilst we know the Roos have a number of players who could be picked up.

Did the Bulldogs plan on this happening, I'm not so sure.

Saints and Tigers as well. St Kilda loves taking Southern Saints and pick 36 seems prime territory for that sort of pick. I'd say De Angelis is the most likely, but I could see Bohanna instead if they think tall is a bigger need. Richmond has a few late picks, one of which is going to be Makur Chuot, but they could potentially use one of the other two late picks on Sophie Locke.

Looks to be a lot of midfielders on the board for Vic but don’t see many genuine true wingers are there any wingers that will get picked up as a few teams I’ve noticed are looking for speed on the outside ?

Had a look through this draft board and noticed very few true wingers are on here but many midfielders do you see it going that they’ll be moved to the outside and if not who are the best winger for vic teams as I’ve noticed many teams are looking for outside speed and with no wingers up there wondering who’s be the bets 3 wingers

I don't separate Wingers from Midfielders because they're no always mutually exclusively, from that 2 round pahntom alone the following play Wing a bit;
Stella Reid, Aurora Smith, Brooke Vickers. With A girl like Ella Friend, Gabbie Featherston, Eliza James and Emelia Yassir capable of playing there as well

Maykaylah Appleby, Stella Reid and Brooke Vickers all rotated through the wings for Metro as well as Ingrid Houtsma and Aurora Smith for Country. All of them spent significant time on the wings with their NAB League clubs. Ella Friend has spent some time there as well, but I can't remember if she played there for Country. Appleby's the only one of those that's really fast, Smith probably next fastest. Zali Friswell is also very fast and has been playing wing for Essendon.
