Hi guys,

the live Draft thread is now open here.

It's easy to pick Lily Mithen... and Chelsea Randall, Jess Wuetschner, Emily Bates, Nicola Stevens, Gabriella Pound, Lucy McEvoy, Ruby Schleicher, Hayley Miller, Lauren Pearce, Karen Paxman, Ellie Blackburn, Brooke Lochland, Isabel Huntington, and a lot of other good players you apparently know nothing about.

There was just as much reason and/or rumours to think they'd join expansion teams as there is about Georgie Prespakis. But they didn't because they were happy with what their current club provided them, which is something the expansion teams have no control over.

First of all, you're completely off the mark saying "expansion teams have to give up nothing". Every signing counts against them when it comes to the AFL handing out draft concessions.

And second, no, a player has never walked out on a club mid-contract as an expansion signing.
I know there was some talk of Wuetschner possibly go to North, where was Bates potentially heading?

Shes actually smaller than most of the opponents she's come up against, just has some superb burts in close and technique in winning contested ball, quick and accurate by hands in close. She's also got a ridiculous sidestep that seems to work everytime
Ok that’s decent to hear since skill translates better than brute force into seniors footy. But now you do have me worried she’s another Patrikios/Smith who manages to hang with bigger opponents through determination and skill. Would she just continue to make us an undersized midfield?

Patrikios and Smith are better suited to outside roles given their skillsets, Ling was made for an inside role, so I'd be surprised if it turned out like that

Ling is more like Jess Fitzgerald in build than she is Patrikios or Smith.

Your being picky again
I gave a list of your teams (North Melbourne) pickups, but you chose to broaden the context of my post regarding Kangaroos

So i'll reply
Where was Lauren Pearce & Karen Paxman supposed to go to, the Darebin Falcons AFLW???
Ellie Blackburn, Brooke Lochland, Isabel Huntington, Nicola Stevens & Gabriella Pound are Melbourne Uni VFLW girls (which was aligned with Kangas from 2009 until 2019) but Why & how do you think that the Kangas could've picked up every Melbourne Uni girl, considering the list you eventually put together when you came into the competition
Jeez you'd be winning the flag every year
Lucy McEvoy, i'm not sure what your point is with her, she didn't knock back a expansion signing, she hadn't been drafted yet

And i'll reply
I know of the good players that didn't walk to an expansion team, do you know the good players that have
Melissa Hickey, Jamie Stanton (twice), Phoebe McWilliams, Katie Brennan, Dana Hooker, Emma Swanson, Sam Virgo, Nat Exon, Cat Phillips
Darcy Guttridge, Ashlee Atkins, Courtney Guard, Maddy Brancatisano, Jessica Sedunary, Jenna Bruton, Jessica Duffin, Jasmine Garner,
Kate Gillespie-Jones, Emma Kearney, Emma King, Danielle Hardiman, Kaitlyn Ashmore, Tahlia Randall, Daria Bannister, Brittany Gibson etc

The question i hoped you would answer is "What did North Melbourne have to give up when they came into the league, for the players i listed?
Draft picks? kidding aren't you, the top ones they take a couple of years to get going, others take awhile longer, unlike what list Kangas started with

"No a player has ever walked out on a club mid-contract as an expansion signing"
I can't believe your using that as a point of reference, when you & i know it will inevitably happen

Just like no player as good as Charlie Rowbottom has ever nominated a different state than the one she played her whole junior career
But it's happened!!!

Ok. Good to hear. I just get all stressed when it comes to draft time with the saints. We’ve bottled it all too often in the men’s so I still have PTSD. I was excited about the prospect of having an obvious easy pick for the team to have 0 chance to stuff up like Prespakis or Rowbottom but now I have to put faith in them to actually choose correctly

Stress kills, just relax & take a few deep breaths :)
Who ever you pick will be a damn good player, you've picked up Patrikios & Smith the last 2 drafts, another gun player is on the way

I am a fan of how Fitzgerald goes about it.
Well, to be clear, I'm not necessarily saying they're similar as players, just similar in stature. I don't think Ling's ever going to get pushed around, though - put it that way. I think she had 7 clearances in the GF, or something. Really, her inside work enabled Oakleigh to play players like James, Reid and Rowbottom forward more, which I think is one of the big reasons they're premiers. So, I'm hopeful that it works out, if Ling is indeed the pick.

I'm being picky, and yet you only want to talk about the one expansion team that has been competitive, rather than the five that haven't.

I know of the good players that didn't walk to an expansion team, do you know the good players that have
None of those players were top priority retentions, and half of them definitely don't pass as good signings.

The only comparison to the current situation is Monique Conti and therefore, given the AFL stepped in to ensure the Dogs would only lose her via a trade for the no.1 pick, I think it'd be ludicrous for Geelong to not take Georgie Prespakis (assuming they feel she's the best player).

The question i hoped you would answer is "What did North Melbourne have to give up when they came into the league, for the players i listed?

An irrelevant question, but I did answer it correctly. The other option would've been to draft former Melb. Uni player Madison Prespakis--AA in her first year, League B&F in her second. No kidding.

I can't believe your using that as a point of reference, when you & i know it will inevitably happen
No it won't, hence there aren't any player contracts signed for beyond the upcoming season. Clubs can try to spin it how they like, but that's a fact.

Just like no player as good as Charlie Rowbottom has ever nominated a different state than the one she played her whole junior career
Well you're way off the mark there, too.

Apologies if this has already been posted but the final 2021 draft order is here (61 in total)

If this is official it looks like Geelong may have 4 picks at the draft despite having 27 active plus Denby Taylor currently inactive. Easily explained if another player is yet to be declared inactive or they have been given an extra list spot.

Sarah Black has released her phantom

She has Thomas high up in WA, Davies as a pick for Gold Coast and Richards as a bolter at pick 12 with Anthony, Gillard and Dojiok missing the first round but all mentioned as likely early picks.

Picks 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 are the same players as Draft Central’s phantom but in a different order.

Edit - 7 and 9 are both Reid and Friend to Geelong so the key early difference is Craven ahead of Ling and Slender falling to Carlton’s pick 10 which can obviously shuffle around easily depending on whether Richmond or Geelong want an inside mid or see her ahead of one of the others early on.

I'd be absolutely stoked if things panned out this way for Geelong. That'd be an amazing haul.

Interesting to see Black rates Poppy Schaap a good chance for Geelong's #15; I floated that possibility a couple of times but some seemed to think it'd be a reach - she's the type of player that could really add some spark to our forward line though and I can very much see her being taken with this pick too.

I'd have thought Ella Friend would be taken earlier than our #7 - and it may still play out that way - but if she gets to our 2nd selection I couldn't be happier.

Fingers crossed!

If we got those two because Freo did something odd, you’d find me doing this

History suggests West Coast are more likely to do something odd at the draft rather than Freo but with 3 of the top 4 picks your team shouldn’t make too many costly mistakes this year.
Can’t see Franklin and Rowley ending up on the same list.

The official site had them on 24 players prior to their signings. There was a suggestion on the Geelong board that Kearns would be outside the list, but that hasn't been the case with previous Irish recruits, has it? I am confused, which is basically my default state.

Trading two second round picks to go up and get Richards doesn't make sense to me. I'd have thought her likely to have been there in the second round. James would have seemed more likely to me as a mid/forward type, if that's the way the Saints wanted to go. If this draft is close to the mark, considering who is left over, the Dogs could do very well out of that trade.

From a Vic standpoint, I don't see a lot else with this phantom that's particularly surprising (since we've been softened up to the teams rushing to grab the inside mids). Am I missing something glaring?
