Elite midfielders dont hit the moon with half of their kicks into the forward line. You don't rate Laird as an elite midfielder? And why can't Schoenberg/Berry/Pedlar develop into that 2nd top class midfielder.
Theres a few.. we’ll end up with a good one come years end.If Horne doesn't fall our way who are the other classy mids who will be sitting in the top 10?

Laird is a clearance king elite midfielder.Elite midfielders dont hit the moon with half of their kicks into the forward line.
we need to build the midfield around Laird as the leader.. but we need to surround him with elite ball users.
I think let him go. Allow our new draftees to get game time, ensure our rebound isn't too fast and we miss out on drafting the necessary top end talent. My conundrum with Crouch - is it possible to fit all of him, Laird, Sloane and Keays in the side for the next two years without 1) affecting our balance of inside mid types (no classy or burst types), and 2) stunting the development of Schoenberg, Pedlar, Berry, and any midfielder we draft?
On talent, he’s a must re-sign, especially considering we’ll probably get end of 1st round compo for him, but all things considered we’ve got a few things to toss up
Matt Roberts, Josh Rachele and Campbell Chesser for mine. All have good skillsIf Horne doesn't fall our way who are the other classy mids who will be sitting in the top 10?
And hes definately cemented a spot.. but we need to chuck some better, faster and more clasy mids around him.. we need our own bont, martin, fyfe, etc etc.. one of those types.. nearly every club has one.. we need one.Laird is a clearance king elite midfielder.
Absolutely correct.
The only older player we should go for is one of those Hodge player/coach appointments with a Hurn or Shane Edwards. Otherwise no thank you
Write them a cheque. I think in 5-10 years every team is going to have a speedy african talent. He seems electrifyingJiath is worth 10x more than Jones and McAsey at this point
I think mcrouch should be moved on regardless of what pick it gets us..
not sure I’d be happy paying him a large long term contract and thats what he’ll be asking for.. given his recent injury issues and how unbelievably slow he looks.
imagine next year our first round, top five pick, elite midfielder playing in the SANFL because the “must play our uninjured seniors” policy has Sloane, crouch, laird and keays clogging up the list in front of him..
like you say.. we need a couple of elite, top class midsfielders.. but we also need to makeroom for them in the 22 too.
Painfully clear we are short a couple of top class midfielders in our rebuild.
Given our recent form would not surprise to see us fall into the bottom 4 pretty quickly.
1. Would Matt Crouch fetch a band one contract? If not, he should stay.
2. If McAsey leaves his currency, our second round pick and Melbourne's second round pick should be bundled to get another top class mid if (1) falls through; assuming he is leaving.
Currently we have Schoenberg, Hately, Berry, Pedlar, Keays, Laird with Crouch and Sloane missing through injury. Probably good enough for top 8 if the latter two were playing (we may have 2 more wins than we do right now) however long term Sloane will be gone so we will need an injection of more top end talent to compete with the top 4 in time.
Second priority needs to be key backs of McAsey leaves.
Third, chips in on Rankine end of next year to assist our middling small forward problems.
Mac Andrew is a Dees NGA this year, very raw but oodles of talent to work with into the future, doubt he'll go in the top 20 but pull the trigger early with one of our 2nds and see if the Dees are prepared to match and play the long game.Write them a cheque. With lynch, tex, talia’s and mcrouchs current contracts ending this year..I really hope that with our age demographic and lack of absolute stars in the 24 to 30 age bracket we have some coin to offer some 20 to 23 year old up and coming players overs to try get them to us. Plenty of these are promising SA players. I nice pay rise and the chance to play for your home city or possibly the team you supported as a kid might be too much to resist. We just have to get them to nominate us, then we can finally do some bending teams over the barrel like we did with Hately.
Kossie Pickett, Lachlan Ash, Harry Perryman, Dylan Stephens, Changkuoth Jiath, Tom Powell, Zac Bailey, Beau McCreery, Connor Rozee, Jack Lukosius, Izak Rankine, Charlie Ballard, Will Gould, Will Hayward, Jordan Dawson, James Rowbottom, Callum Coleman-Jones
Yeah on our midfield stocks - we're certainly lacking top-end class through the middle that the good teams have. If you look at a lot of the premiership/grand final teams over the past few years - most have:Yeah, we're really lacking on the upper end at the moment. We've got some players who could become it (namely Pedlar, Berry and Schoenberg), but the goal this year needs to be really expanding on that group and getting as many shots at developing a class A grade mid as possible. Likewise, I'm expecting a bottom 4 finish from here. This is where the draw ramps up, and playing as much youth as we are is starting to catch up with us.
From how I'm seeing it, it's become an easy decision with what to do with Crouch. Let him take FA. You have Laird for 5 years, and Keays has developed into very good midfield for this rebuild, and is a couple of years younger. We also need to be focused on opening up midfield jobs for our kids (i.e. Pedlar, Berry, Schoenberg, whoever we draft), and spending the cap space to keep Crouch for 4-5 years hurts that. If only he was a 2022 FA...
The McAsey comment is easier said then done, I'd be asking though. I'd expect us to have to take a different (and at the moment, cheaper) direction to try to find that class midfielder however, and really, the player I'd be going very hard at this offseason is Dylan Stephens. He'd fit how we'd want to play, seeing he's hard at it. He has that class and also it has the potential to hurt Sydney, a team I'd be taking every opportunity to hinder at this point in time. They are the team we should be the most worried about at the moment.
Key defender is absolutely not a priority at this point in time, even if McAsey goes. Butts has shown enough to indicate he'll have a good career. Worrell is having an excellent season in the SANFL at the moment. Talia is still here. You have two mediocre ones in Murray and Borlase who could be something at a pinch. It's firmly a re-assess at the end of 2022 deal.
This one is a midfielders draft. I'd also be investing one or two picks in our outside stocks, seeing Milera had 2 knee recos now. Also a developing ruckman would be very handy.
Rankine could be a good move. 2022 is definitely setting up as the time we should be making a big move, and he's certainly the player who could push us over the edge if he is properly harnessed.
Yeah on our midfield stocks - we're certainly lacking top-end class through the middle that the good teams have. If you look at a lot of the premiership/grand final teams over the past few years - most have:
1. A high-end classy type (Bont, J Kelly, T Kelly etc)
2. A high-end burst mid (Petracca, Shuey, Dangerfield etc)
We have the industrious, clean inside mids that we need in Laird, Keays and Sloane (plus Berry going forward). What we lack is real top-end midfield talent. Now maybe Pedlar and Schoenberg could develop into one of these types (I have high hopes for Harry as a Shuey-type), but overall I'm unsure where it comes from. Maybe from FA in a couple of years?
I do agree we need some extra outside mid class as well, to pair with Sholl. Now Milera could well be a great foil, but the knee reco hurts his chances of impact. I'd also possibly look at targeting a Stephens-type
It's a shame Jones hasn't turned into the type of talent we expected, that would've positioned us quite well
Enormous call. Our potential mids at this stage are young and inexperienced. Sholl has shown he can be a star, glimpses from Schoey and Milera. I think Hamil, Hately, Berry, and Pedlar have shown enough to suggest they will make it. McHenry has shown glimpses too, just needs to get the ball 5-10 more times a game. I think its safe to say 6 of these 8 have 200 to 250 game potential. Would be nice to add 4 more to that list this next 2 off seasons. Have we ever had such a large amount of young potential at once? Could it be the 2nd coming of the fab 4 - Roo, McLeod, Edwards, Goodwin?

Not so sure. Doesn't have the body to win contests and pushed off too easily.Hamill might make it????
he’s our best prospect. Has star written all over him. Top end AA B&F winning star
Or is he one of those guys destined never to reach his peak due to injury.Hamill might make it????

So does Sholl, but he finds a wayNot so sure. Doesn't have the body to win contests and pushed off too easily.

Milera is almost at a “put your glasses down its all over” point in his career.. body just keeps failing him.. will spend over two years out of the game and his best weapon was his evasive abilities that were mesmerising.. could turn on a dime. if he loses any of that due to his knee he’s almost cooked his goose unfortunately.Yeah on our midfield stocks - we're certainly lacking top-end class through the middle that the good teams have.
