Maybe . I wonder how the Tex relationship with the club is going ( doughty his manager )
Why would Tex or Doughty be upset

The AFL wanted to suspend Tex for 12 weeks, the club with support of the AFLPA got this to 6 weeks

The club has not sacked Tex, and everyone from the CEO, to the Coach and players have said that they want Tex back....

The club is also funding all of Tex education programs and well-being support as result if the racial slur

Again, why would Doughty be upset?

because we don't know exactly how they feel , its pertinent but don't think it sways dawson either way

I don't know why people get so upset about Port beating us out to some players. Not like they have won a premiership from it. They haven't even appeared in a grand final for 14 years. So all the huff n puff on their drafting and trading means sweet FA. Crows have still out performed them over those 14 years and its almost certain now we will enter another period of success well before they do. If players want to go to Port, let them.

Im actually trying to work out which players have they actually got that we wanted as well....

We didn't go for Allir Allir, we were not chasing Rockcliff, we enquired about Fantasia but didn't make an offer, we made Mottlop an offer but were not willing to increase our offer

We can accept that Ports drafting has been good however which players however I can't identify too many players that Port have got ahead us through trading in that we actually targeted

The problem isn’t beating out Port, it’s securing targets in general

Port have pretty much been able to do it year in, year out. We make fun of their ‘missing piece’ strategy but, in reality, when you are a contending side you need to address needs (or double down on strengths) with players in their prime. The Dogs (Treloar, Keath, Bruce), Demons (May, Lever, Langdon, Brown), Lions (Daniher, Cameron), Cats (too many to name here lol) and Power have all done it

We have not had a great track record of attracting desirable players. This needs to change soon as we start to come into finals contention in the next 2-3 years

yep I think from next year onwards especially

Dawson has a connection with Aliir
Dawson has 0 connection with Nicks
I'm sure that barely impacts his decision making.

He will go to the club that offers him the best contract. Everything else is too even.

There's a big chance that will be Port, because they've been unafraid to overbid in the past and they feel that they've missed out on a few others this offseason, as so many have re-signed.

Port have the cash, as much as we do.

So he’s a gun if he comes to us but no good if goes to Port

this is just denial rubbish that you’re going on with, Port have a history of getting these players over us when there is a bidding war

given that I’d say it’s 75% chance Port ..they find a way to get it done . You’re in denial Re where we are at in these kind of situations
When has there been a bidding war?

Polec and Motlop.

Polec was the only one that surprised me. Motlop had relatives at Port.

We as a board have been over this. For a lot of years, the club has preferenced developing players themselves rather than trying to attract them from elsewhere.

I think we have changed our settings a little on this but we still won't try and do it as much as Port does. We seem to be going thru a bit of a sweet period bringing in a few of Nick's players he had contact with previously. That'll dry up over time.

Probably what we have been a bit wrong about was that we ended up with a lot of non crows bound people that were leaving that we werent getting fair value for, for a whole host of reasons. So now we've just shifted our settings a bit to more trade, especially for crows liking ex SA's and we've shifted our drafting settings a little bit more to SA and to crows likers. Not wholesale changes, just a little shift. Pretty much textbook what we needed to do in my view.

If we get Burgess? He is all but confirmed by Caroline Wilson months ago and we've already hired a person who he want as part of his team, I'm certain he is coming here and Balme will join us next year.
I think Balme will stay at Richmond for another 2 years and then retire.

We aren't contending though right now? And what was our weakness in 2017, not the ruck, backline or forward and both Sloane and M.Crouch were playing like elite midfielders, we were probably missing an outside midfielder but saw B.Crouch as such a player before his horrible groin and hamstring injuries.

And thankfully we didn't get either of them

I thought Caroline Wilson confirmed he was able to break his contract until Gale talked him out of it (hence explain why the "discussion" when well into the weekend and late Monday) so his mind was made up that he wanted to come back to SA and phase into retirement.

I guess we'll get a bit more of a read on what our long-term strategy is as the rebuild continues. It's hard to judge while we're still pretty much smack-bang in the middle of it. I agree that right now we seem to be SA-focused, which is a good strategy for developing a core of players that will be committed long-term to the club

That said, once we start to win more and more games, you'd hope we'd be able to attract players beyond those originally from SA, as well. You'd cross your fingers that success and winning will produce a culture that's appealing to rival players, pieces that will put us over the top no matter where they grew up

No we aren't, that's why I say our hit rate of attracting desirable targets needs to lift soon, not necessarily right now. I'd be bummed if we miss out on Dawson, but it's not the end of the world if we do. We can't continue to strike out on those types going forward, though, and Dawson (or any established target this off-season or next) would be a good starting point

As for 2017, yes none of those areas were weaknesses as such, but was Richmond's forward line a 'weakness' when they targeted Tom Lynch? What about the Cats' forward line when they targeted Cameron? Just because we weren't necessarily lacking in those areas doesn't mean they couldn't have been improved, it's why we targeted Gibbs (admittedly it completely blew up in our face, but it was the right idea)

That was my whole point , the poster was suggesting the fact that Nicksy played at the swans would benefit our chances

I'd be disappointed if we don't land Dawson however I think we're on track to become a more attractive club than Port. We're building a strong cultual foundation while Port's culture of entitlement and arrogance (lead by Kochie) is unraveling in front of our eyes.
