TBH I'm a little taken back by the level of interest in Roberts on this thread. I haven't got much of an opinion on him as I've seen very little, but just based on what i've read earlier in the year I thought he was behind the top echelon of players (Diacos, Horne, Rachele, Sonsie, Sinn).

But reading this thread it seems like many believe he's very much in that echelon and quite high up it in fact.

Is there a early SA Skew happening here, or is he really that highly rated?
Not sure, but I heard this from somebody who has connections at the Hawks

Hey Bicks, interested in your opinion on Roberts pre-championships ranking from the discussion above.

Peter Doherty pointed out that he's been ranked as the #4 prospect from Draft Central, Doerre and Pascoe. Is that more or less where you would have him rated?
It will depend on what type of mid we are targeting I guess but that's probably around his range currently.

I'm hoping to see more of Campbell Chesser and his midfield progression , Josh Rachele also but who knows with covid again raising it's ugly head

Imagine if most of the Vic junior footy season gets wiped out. At the end of the year, you are trying to draft players without having seen them for nearly 2 seasons!! That would test out the recruiters. Wow.

Given the basketcase that has been over the years, whoever has turned it around deserves huge credit.

I think there is Horne next year and possibly Will Verrall the year after that will be very high draft picks.
Clay Sampson in amongst that.

Is it wrong to be a little concerned that we might end up like Carlton though? Competitiveness can only get you so far if the talent is not there.

I think we've got a bit too much of a hard on for honest battler types at the moment.
Carlton is a great example of a team that WASN'T competitive, and constantly went back for high draft picks and went nowhere. They didn't have a culture of endeavour and working for others.

Carlton is a great example of the opposite of what you are saying. They pretty much threw away seasons to get draft picks, and their club went backwards. They did the opposite of us.

Let's see if I have this right.

We need quality mids to give ourselves any chance of becoming a top end team in the future. The 2021 draft has 2-3 quality mids from SA. And I mean really high end quality mids.

And so what do we do? We keep picking Mackay and Kelly so that we can really push to win as many games as possible and hopefully finish 10th!

Oh, yes it will mean we miss out on any chance of drafting the exact type of players we need, but the experience of winning a few meaningless games in 2020 and that stellar 10th finish will keep us all warm and cosy when our rebuild ends up with us being the 6th best team at our peak in 2025.

If we on here mostly think the Macster doesn't actually make our team better (as he without Golum hinted at), wouldn't we want him selected under current circumstances? Even if we think the club is picking him to put the strongest team on the field to win matches - picking him gives the club plausible deniability of not picking our best, because, you know, experience and professionalism.

At the end of the day, we're 15th right now instead of knocking on the door to the top 8 - "watch the hips, not the ball".

Yeah, that really can't be discounted at this point. There were rumours the AFL were getting antsy about us tanking last season and really, our list management has screamed one thing - we're tanking.

It would explain why we're seemingly getting spooked about meeting a certain experience criteria.

Skippos Can you comment on Sinn's time spent in the midfield? Potential to be an AFL mid?

Sinn and Draper potentially being dual position players sounds pretty good.

Unless Draper really shoots up the boards (sounds like it could happen), both could be gettable with not too much movement of our picks.

There's enough there. I don't love Sinn like some do - but with some work he should make a reasonable mid. Just depends if he's going to be more valuable off half back though. Has the luxury of being able to start his AFL career in defence though and work in.

Are you seriously suggesting Ben Hobbs doesn't at least sit somewhere in that list.

I mean it's 15 blokes, I don't think Hobbs is universally considered a part of the top 15 yet. For me it's June and I just haven't seen the kid enough yet to assess. No doubt once I do if he's good enough he'll move in.

It can be completely discounted.

Understand he’s potentially a top line rower which affects footy pre season - bit like Packer, also at Sturt. Probably needs to make a call soon either way.

Playing his footy at Scotch at the moment.
Is that Seb's son?

Frank Packer is the one showing a bit at Sturt isn't he?

Tall forward.

Seb's nephew
Ah - That could be the confusion. Franky is a Norwood player - Felix is the tall forward at Sturt.

Franky played 16’s at Norwood last year. But now you mention him - can’t say as I’ve seen his name anywhere this year - might have to dig around.

Nah no need to apologise - I’m glad you mentioned it, Frank was looking pretty good last year, but I’d completely forgotten about him. apparently managing a shoulder injury so out for extended period unfortunately.
