Purely based on Player Profiles and what I've seen on playing clips..
I'd hope we lean towards Leiu over Cripps

Cripps - seems slow and not as athletic. If he wasn't Paddy's brother, doubt we'd be talking about him...
Leiu - Seems quick, covers more ground and can play each third... Has more upside for mine...

Hope who ever doesn't get picked for seniors, get's an offer for reserves... Along with hopefully Polson and Voss..
Wasn't there an article saying that we beat out two other teams for Cripps. So he must have something

Does anyone know when Liam jones needs to be removed from the list so as to include one of the train on players?

I ask because the Carlton website team list shows all team changes for this year other than Jones.

Jones will sit on the list all season. Already moved to inactive list. We can add either of our train on players ( or a wildcard) at any time. Will not officially be delisted until season’s end

He could contract COVID and then apply for a medical exemption. Would be ready to go R1, if it was sooner rather than later

Oh my that’s right. The world has changed a lot since he retired and there’s likely to be more than a few players who will contract Covid before the season starts.

This article got me thinking: Why McGovern’s “last ditch” switch to save his career can be a success

How many potential recruits have we given guarantees to regarding the position they will play?

Clearly McGovern has some qualities that make him a potentially very good intercept defender yet we’ve exclusively played him as a forward. Is this because it’s what we promised him to move across?

Similar with Zac Williams who we clearly courted with more midfield minutes guaranteed - even though he is nowhere near fit enough to play there consistently.

Jack Martin is another who has primarily been used forward … yet seems to have the outside mid skills we sadly lack.

Did we continue to play Newnes because we felt obliged to give him opportunities?

I’m sure players such as Fogarty, Setterfield, Cerra all been offered more midfield minutes.

I wonder what we’ve offered Hewett and Young?

Would be fascinating to understand if the previous coaching regime was happy to offer recruits these incentives, or if it was entirely up to list management to get the deals done, no matter the implications for team selection.

Doubt the previous list management team is making the calls for the match committee, 2 to 3 head coaches later...

I'm sure when we're talking to prospective players they're told about the opportunities to play particular positions and where they could potentially fit into the team. That's about as far as it goes. They're not signing contracts that guarantee they get to play their preferred position or even that they have to be in the 22.

I agree - yet there's evidence that whatever discussions we've had with some of recruits, match committee has stuck to it, in spite of performance.

Get what your saying, but not quite sure an opinion is actually evidence.

The list management team has changed, the coaches & match committee has changed. Even is the previous regime had promised something, formally or informally, their successors are hardly going to hold true to that if it would negatively effect their ability to do their job.

Apparently, the whole Club was given a dressing down/wake up call in no uncertain terms at the end of last year by the incoming Chairman.

The appointment of a new coach and a totally new coaching team might reinforce to players that all previous bets are off.

Have a look at the contractual status of the list and it might become even more obvious that the Club has diminished interest in committing to players who aren't performing. SPS was let go for a sympathy 3rd rounder. LoB managed to get a rookie spot for a year.

Cripps apparently signed on for less than he could have got, the Club moved to shore up Walsh by appointing him as VC along with Weitering. Cerra and Hewett as capable mids came over with not too much fuss or angst compared to previous failed attempts to attract mids....

I wouldn't be too concerned about what Teague may have said to McGovern to entice him to come over - that boat has sailed.

Fringe players might have to get used to doing time in VFL and being good enough to push players out based on form going forward. The list is adding to depth every year. In couple of years Carlton may have achieved parity with finals sides as far as balanced aged profiles go and can look forward to a sustainable period of finals type performance going forward.

I don't see Cuningham/Marchbank ( injury prone), Dow/LoB/Fisher - serial underperformers, Setterfield as guaranteed certainties on the list going forward.

Vossy owes no player anything - he would understand what the expectations are in terms of on-field performance are.

We can't just improve through increments in the way we've been going because we'll just keep building up mediocre players at the bottom end (through compromised draft selections and players retained just to make up the list) whilst others will retire or drop off the pace. The fact that we seemed desperate to make another selection in the draft (to make up for Jones) while cutting our list so fine in the first place suggests a list management team in two minds.

Will be interesting to see if those players we have traded for perform better or worse when the new coaching regime dictates how and where they play.

Whilst I am not taking up your overall thesis (list management in 2 minds), I didn't think the club was 'desperate to make another selection in the draft'. I saw it as us trying to leverage the situation to advantage. I understand why AFL house didn't agree (probably knew something about Darling and Ellis-Yolmen, and WC couldn't get an extra pick after the draft). But nothing wrong in us asking at the time. I would have been disappointed if we hadn't tried to get an extra pick to compensate (and as high as possible).
