Would/could we add another midfielder in O’Meara (28yo next year), T.Mitchell (29) or Dumont (27) if it worked out on our S/C & picks?

Dumont could be an option on the cheap should nothing work out & as a UFA, if over his recent injuries.

Yeah it was a tough call, probably down to as much bad luck and circumstance as much anything.
It could have just as easily been Owies with the hammy, Gibbons playing and Owies goes.
Except for the fact that Owies isn't taking a list spot (he's a CatB rookie). We likely would have kept him regardless. Gibbons would still have been on shaky ground.

I can't believe we never won a flag let alone barely played finals with that team. loaded with talent, but didn't achieve much.
definitely underperformed. Its why it shits me when I hear people say we have been a rabble for 20 years blah blah. We made and won finals, but obviously not enough.

How do our players compare to the top end at Melbourne.

Jones - May ❌
Weitering - Lever ?
Saad - Salem ?
Stocker - Bowey ✔✔
Docherty - Hibberd ✔
Plowman - Petty ❌

our backline compares really well

TDK - Gawn ❌❌❌
Cripps - Viney ❌
Walsh - Oliver ?
Kennedy - Petracca ❌❌
Curnow - Brayshaw ?
O’Brien/Newnes - Langdon ❌

a lot of losses here. But TDK is getting better. Cripps had a poor year while Walsh will go past Oliver eventually. Add Cerra instead of Curnow and we will start to get closer to breaking even.

McKay - Brown ✔✔
Curnow - McDonald ❌
Honey - Pickett ❌❌
Owies - Fritsch ❌❌
Mcgovern - Harmes ?
Fisher - Neal-Bullen ❌

another loss overall but Curnow, honey and McGovern should improve next season. Fishers eat is better than Neal-Bullen but will we see it.

Melbourne’s bench consists of fit two way running role players and a second ruck. Players like Dow, Fogarty, Williams, Silvagni, Williamson and Gibbons are our equivalent which are better than Melbourne’s hands down. Silvagni probably harshly done by not starting over mcgovern/Newnes or Fisher.

our list management has a few holes for 2022. It can be fixed pretty easily in my opinion.

Number 1 - keeping our players on the field with full uninterrupted preseasons
Number 2 - adding Cerra, hewett and a second ruck
Number 3 - a proper game plan that stops exposing our strong backline.

The last one should have huge upsides in all three lines and make us a 5-6 goal better team.

How would those comparisons been in 2019 and 2020. i suspect very different

I really rate wirey, Rangey type players like Langdon, Simmo, Skinny Lappin.
There’s something special about them, they rarely get injured, have huge tanks, can kick a mile and have great smarts and foot skills. Sure not all, but it’s like they have worked extra hard to succeed all their footy lives, to make up for their light frames.

Tuck wrote the book , and he earned a LOT of respect.

Do we need to make one more delisting from the Senior list? Is the minimum 3 draft pick rule still in place?

Murphy, Casboult, Gibbons, Ramsay, Petrevski-Seton gone from the Senior List and Betts was on the Rookie List this year I believe.
Cerra, Hewett and Young take 3 spots.

We've currently got 34 Senior Players on the list (including out-of-contract/not yet reported). You can have 36 minimum (which we did last year) to 38 maximum.

Yes, we need to take 3 players, although 1 Rookie Upgrade will count. So depends on how we want to make up our list. Likely we will go with 36 again, so probably move a player to the Rookie List between the ND and the RD, as per the new rules.

I would shift Marhbank or Cuners to the injury list, could be a couple of others that could be considered for a similar move

That would only open up Rookie spots though, not senior.

Personally I don't think owies is quick or crafty. Most of his goals were from lead up marks not crumbing.

Handy player but I prefer Gibbons.

I agree with this.

I admire owies work ethic and appreciate that he has improved each year but he creates very little. His best quality is getting free in the forward 50 and taking an uncontested mark. His ground ball game appears pretty average. He doesn’t make things happen.

Maybe owies will continue to improve but currently he doesn’t do what l expect of a small forward.

Have been thinking about the Ramsay and Gibbons delistings, and because they know their situation now, there is at least a chance for them to be taken as DFA.

Also, looking at uncontacted rookies of Cottrell, Parks, and McDonald, I can still see the possibility of 1 or 2 being delisted. It seems to me that if is thought that list can be improved, this will happen.

I know a lot on this board don't like him for his poor off field behavior (I largely think this is because of his immaturity and not being the sharpest tool) but Fev will always be my favorite Blue of all time. As a child of the 70s it was Jezza, then in the 80/90s it was Big Sticks, but when Fev came on in his first game and kicked 12, I was sold.

Never was I so excited at games because we were always a chance with Fev, and he was a pure excitement machine during a bleak period.
Absolute gun forward, would love to see Harry to fire up and turn it on like Fev did.
Harry's size means he is harder to stop from marking, he is an impossible matchup.

But imagine Harry with Fev's kicking. Would be better than buddy

I hope Harry learns to read the play like Fev. Part of the reason our game plan appeared to be “kick it to Fev” was that he always presented himself so well and made kicking to him the easiest option for our midfielders.
A few times this year our midfielders had it in space and looked forward and hesitated because it wasn’t clear where Harry needed the ball to be kicked. Then the pressure comes on the midfielder and the delayed kick is compromised.

I hope we get the three headed monster of Harry, Charlie and Gov going this year so they create space for each other and isolate the most favourable match ups.

Austin seemed to be implying that Oscar was going to be a fixture in the KPP dept when fit.

We’re going to need at least 1 draft pick for our current #25, so perhaps LOB drops to the rookie list.
Really needed to bite the bullet with Newnes IMO.

“It also announced that Michael Gibbons and Sam Ramsay would not be offered new contracts for next season, leaving O'Brien and rookie quartet Matt Cottrell, Luke Parks, Oscar McDonald and Jordan Boyd as the only players without deals”

So LOB's 'future up in the air'

Lochie O’Brien’s fate at Carlton is set to be decided after the trade period, with Blues list boss Nick Austin indicating the wingman’s future at the club is “up in the air”.

“We’ve still got a few players up in the air that we’ll continue to work through in the coming weeks – and Lochie’s one of those,” Austin told AFL Trade Radio on Friday.
“We’ve had really good dialogue with his management and Lochie’s had the chance to have some one-on-one time with Michael Voss and the new coaches.

If there are no further trades, LOB will prob get a new contract and I'd expect we'll take 2 picks at the draft and upgrade Kennedy. After the draft will likely move one player (perhaps Marchbank) back to the Rookie list. That would leave the senior list at 36. I think they'd like one spot free, which would mean reducing the rookie list from 7 to 5. So I'm expecting 2 out of the 4 above rookies to miss out. At a guess, Boyd and Cottrell.

Dumont could be an option on the cheap should nothing work out & as a UFA, if over his recent injuries.
If they were cheap enough I would definitely add another experienced midfielder, our lack of depth has been a contributing factor to the 5+ goal runs that have been hurting us.
P.S. I heard SOS say he favours O'Meara.

I find most click bait speculations amusing ...

Really, even if there is a quote from Austin when he was on Trade Radio yesterday.
