One of their former presidents, maybe the one before McGuire, said something like "if Aboriginal people just behaved like white people, they'd get some respect".

The only thing that changed under McGuire is they got better at covering it up.
Allan McAlister

Racist abuse was part of footy culture then. Winmar and his indigenous teammate Gilbert McAdam were routinely vilified that day, and many others, by opposing players and spectators alike. The term ''black'' was used as if it were a grave insult.

A week later, then Collingwood president Allan McAlister unwittingly gave an insight into the underlying dynamics of the abuse.

He wanted to assure people that the Magpies did not have an issue with indigenous Australians, but then added the following proviso: ''As long as they conduct themselves like white people, well, off the field, everyone will admire and respect … As long as they conduct themselves like human beings, they will be all right. That's the key.''

This is worst than the Burton/Pyke trainwreck.

Horrific effort. Everyone at that Collingwood press conference should be sacked immediately.

Calling it a proud day for the club is embarrassing for the supporters and completely ridiculous

No it won't be

The Footy media will go faux tough on them for a few days. Then will be forgotten.

There will be no repercussions for Collingwood at all.

You want a job in Footy media, toe the line. Eddie owns a large employor of Football media "profesionals".

No, I mean the actual press conference was worse.

It was absolutely pathetic.

Great response from the Club, no need to drag up the past now.

Now in breaking news. Adelaides band practice continues to have a negative impact on players that were not even at practice.

Great response from Collingwood ??

I presume this is sarcasm.

Was listening to Blight/Wildey a second ago when dropping my daughter off at dance.

Firstly, when did Blighty become Neil Kerley?

Secondly, Wildey trying to defend Eddie as to why he shouldn't resign immerdiately...talk about pushing shit uphill. Eddie would have been much better today facing the press and saying "this has happened on my watch, I'm the president, I take the blame, I resign immediately"

Basically everyone in the media knows Eddie and say he's a good guy so they don't want to bag him. No one is willing to say a bad word about him. Apart from Heretier anyone else?

Graham cornes also saying well done on collingwood doing this.
Nothing to do with Hertiers complaints...

33 years since Winmar lifted his jumper at the Collingwood supporters - good to see the rapid response from Collingwood
~28 years?

But still a long time. Correct.

There will be no repercussions for Collingwood at all.

Correct.

Its frightening to think if this happened at the Crows and what impact it would have had on them.

Genuinely believe the AFL would have banned the Club from the AFL for a period of time.
