Tom Campbell better known as sh*t TRUCK CAMPBELL amongst us North supporters.

Hoping he reaches his full potential.

I'm sure at 30 he's not going to get a lot better.

He'd only be on our list as back up though, not in our best 22.

I'm surprised he played so much footy at North this year in front of a young ruck in a developing side.

With everyone re-signed for next year now, here is a look at who we have by positions to get a sense at what type of player we could be bringing in to fill the 7-9 list spots we have to fill.

Battle named in defence based off what Gags said last week. Kept Long forward based off him ending the season there. Clark with the mids since we expect him to make that move over the preseason. Those who spend a significant amount of time in a 2nd position have it next to their names.

Key Defender - Howard, Wilkie, Highmore, Battle, Joyce, Allison
Small defender - Paton, Webster, Geary
Half Back - Sinclair, Coffield, Connolly

Inside Mids - Steele, Crouch, Gresham (fwd), Jones, Bytel
Inside/Outside mids - Hannebery, Clark (def), Ross, Byrnes (fwd)
Wing - Billings (fwd), Hill (def), DMac

Ruck - Ryder, Marshall(fwd), Heath

Key forward - King, Membrey, Sharman, Wood (wing)
Small forward - Butler, Higgins, Kent, Long(def)

Overall, moving Battle to defence has us better stocked in that area than I thought. Our options leave us a bit undersized if anything happened to Howard, but there are options to make a functional backline. Unless we can get that big KPD, I don't know whether adding another slightly undersized option is a big priority.

We have less half back options than I thought - maybe Hill can improve his defensive work over preseason and stay in that part of the ground next year?

It's expected Campbell will come as the ready-to-go back up ruck and 4 should be enough for next year. While Marshall plays a lot as a fwd, I kept him with the rucks since him rucking solo is a genuine possibility for when Ryder misses.

The one area I think we could add too that hasn't been discussed is adding another key forward option as depth. If we are settling Battle in defence, we dont have a lot of option in case of injury to the KPF stocks. Especially since we like to play tall up forward. Is there anyone who could be added as a DFA to just give us a depth options?

The issue with the key defenders is that ideally you'd have probably half of thrn listed as third tall defenders.

Unfortunately the ones that are actually key defender size, Howard is then only one that has shown he's good enough at AFL level just yet.

Letting Battle try and settle in defence is a good idea though I think. He's the same size as Highmore but I get the feeling Highmore is more suited to being able to play off his man a bit more to cencentrate on his interecept marking.

I'd still like us to bring in another key defender though.

Height isn't that important to being a good KPD. Wilkie and Highmore play a similar style and I think Coffield is playing his best footy the same way as a kind of sweeper interceptor. Rance was 194, Grimes plays tall and short and is 193 etc. Harris Andrews is the only really elite super tall defender. 195 is probably the ideal almost, keeps them nimble but tall enough not to get too out reached or out muscled.

Most sides have one tall stopper and some intercept defenders that can play off or on their man. I think the issue for Howard is that ideally he is a tall intercept defender too and they'd like to let him off the chain.

I'd only bring in another one if they are a genuine 195cm plus, big bodied defender. We don't need another slightly undersized, more intercepting type. We have that type of defender covered.

Wilkie being able to play undersized on the big key forwards helps us get around the lack of a 2nd option but it can leave us thin for options if anything happened to Howard.

No height is not the issue I wa really talking about.

I think both Wilkie and Highmore are suited to the third tall key defender role.

Highmore has never been a key defender at state level. Wilkie can hold his own but I think he struggles against the bigger types and is suited to a similar role to Highmore.

I do think having a couple of genuine key defenders helps these types immensely too.

Lever was a much better player with Tomlinson and Petty in the side thus year.

Most good side have two genuine tall key defenders though and onee or two intercept types to go with it.

I agree. That is what I was suggesting, we have plenty of 3rd tall types and only one genuine tall key defender in our best 22.

Schlong, Skinner and Dean are all 195-199cm.

If we go for anyone, I'd prefer Skinner even with his injury history. Dean reads more as an interceptor first while Skinner seems more well rounded as a defender. Schlensog has been linked to a few clubs and we aren't one so I presume we aren't interested.

We need Battle to get strong AF, capable of playing on Hawkins types and then he and Howard are fine for key posts.

Key position players run in straight lines which already suits Battle

Yeah I think we saw it a bit late last season Wilkie started standing the best forward and Howard got up the ground a little. Not sure if that's the role the might have earmarked for Battle going forward but having so many blokes who play their best footy as interceptors is an intersting comundrum.

Feel like we could use another winger, whether we draft one of try someone like Naish. I think Owens can play there. Definitely need a taller KPD as well, looking at this we could also use a running half-back but it doesn't feel like a priority.

Naish is someone we might look at after the draft, depending on who we get with our first pick - someone like Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera is a pure wing so might make Naish unnecessary but if we get an inside mid/flank type then Naish could be a good pick up.

I agree, I'd take Nasiah happily, but it sounds like most people would rather a 'pure midfielder' which makes Naish more palatable.

The only issue with NWM is his ability to actually win the ball. From his highlights it doesn't seem to be a massive issue, but it's still a big step up to AFL. I think you would like to at least be drafting players who can win the ball and can contest.

Mids generally have low bust factor, outside players, KPs and rucks are much more likely to be outright busts.

I'm not against drafting Nasiah, but there are others I would prefer over him. His kicking is elite and we could do someone with the class he has. But the big question mark I've seen on him is he can take awhile to dispose of the ball and while he gets away with it at SANFL level, it is something that might not translate to the AFL.

By all accounts he isn't too bad at the contest, at least for an outside player. Obviously it will never be a strength but it doesn't look like the worst problem. It might take him time to do it at AFL level but I think it would be ok. Looks to have good tackle numbers too from what I've seen
