“Players that could arrive

They’re still in a pretty good spot list-wise but the Lions are one of a number of clubs looking to add a cheap ruckman. Collingwood’s Mason Cox could fit the bill after their tall stocks took several hits throughout 2021 due to injury”

Eewww!

Judging by the reactions I've seen here, Cox is one of the most underrated players in the league. He would be perfectly adequate on a minimal salary.

Quick question - what did we give up for Melbourne's first round pick and why?
Two picks that ended up in the early 20s and were used to draft Jake Bowey (who just started in the GF) and Bailey Laurie, presumably because we didn't rate last year's crop and thought Melbourne might miss finals again this year. I wish we'd waited until the draft and then sold them to Collingwood instead.

Indicative draft picks: 14, 18, 47, 51, 57, 73

Delisted: Nil
Retired: Grant Birchall, Archie Smith
Unsigned free agents: Connor Ballenden

Whispers: After a third straight top-four finish and a semi-final exit, Brisbane seems quite content with its current list, the third youngest in the competition. Brock Smith and Tom Joyceare the only two senior-listed players currently out of contract. With Eric Hipwoodexpected to miss a majority of next season, the Lions have been linked to interest in delisted Blue Levi Casboultand out-of-favour Cat Darcy Fort to offer support in both the forward line and ruck. -Michael Whiting

Is Fish saying that Joyce and Fullarton have re-signed?

The way things currently stand:

Out of contract
Connor Ballenden (R)
Thomas Joyce
James Madden (R)
Brock Smith
Kalin Lane (R)

Current list spots available - 1 (1 senior list)

Current picks - 14, 18, 47, 51, 57, 73

Assuming we elevate Madden and keep Lane, that leaves us four total spots left. At this stage, assuming we take 14 and 18 at the draft, the remaining two list spots will be between Ballenden, Joyce, B. Smith and any new recruits/draftees.

This is assuming we don't trade out a contracted player.

This is at least the third time that it's been reported by multiple outlets that Joyce and Smith are our only OOC senior players, so I'm pretty much taking it as granted now.

we elevate Madden
I suspect we only do this if we have an academy kid or someone that we want to put into Madden's Cat B slot given the bonus fourth year for rookies this off-season. It'd give us more flexibility.

We traded out 2020 picks 18 and 19 and 2021 pick 33.

We traded in 2020 pick 25 and 2021 pick 18.

As to why?

You’d have to ask the club.

I can speculate, but you won’t like the simple answer. We done ****ed up.

There’s a more complicated answer, that I do agree with the basic premise why, but again we chose the wrong trade partner and badly miscalculated other teams potential moves, that were quite obvious before the draft.

To say we chose would suggest we had a better option

We did have at least one other option. Not to make the trade.

As we saw on draft night, both GWS and Richmond traded out late first round picks.

It use be great doing trades with hindsight

It was a risk and a strange trade but I'm not too disappointed in hindsight. Last year's draft looks pretty average

It worked ok if Dees ended up at pick ~11-12 this year. I was hopeful that they'd miss the finals, but I thought they'd probably be a low finalist. Hopefully a first week elimination.

I'm not going to pretend that I foresaw them being the best team in the league this year. Think it's clear to see that the club didn't either.

I'm favouring us not trading out our 2022 first rounder this year.

At present, anyone trading with us will be valuing it around pick 16-18 next year. The pick might be worth more than that (if we fall). The pick cannot be worth less than current value. We take on all the risk, with no upside available to us.

Hold the pick. Next year, we'll know what it's worth. If it's still worth pick 16-18, we aren't any worse off. If we fall, we receive the benefit, not someone else. We can trade the pick during 2022 trade period, or during the draft itself, without a problem.

Would the Crows entertain swapping pick 4 for our pick 14 (they can trade to Swans for Dawson) and we give them our first rounder next year for the Crows second rounder next year. Sounds like Will Ashcroft will go top 3 at this early stage in 2022 so we don't want to waste a first round pick on him. Trade it and move up to pick 4 this year and get a second round pick next year for points we will need for Ashcroft.

In: Pick 4 (2021) and Crows second round pick 2022.

Out: Pick 14 (2021) and our first round pick 2020.

Crows would probably not be interested but they do have a dilemma with Dawson.

Just a though while walking the dog :)

Absolutely no way they'd do that.

where has the Mason Cox link come from ?

Mate, you totally didn’t understand what I meant.

I meant that they would have a much better evaluation of the kids in this draft, and who would suit what our club is looking for.

But you keep doing you.
Maaate. yes I acknowledge your amateur status, I acknowledge the professional status of our recruiters. However, you said you view players different to our recruiters. I quote: "I’m looking at a combination of talent and type of player that will suit our list going forward."
I asked: "You think our recruiters are not looking at the talent and type of player that will suit our list going forward?
I seem to have gotten under your skin and even an innocent interaction is rebated with a snide, defensive comment. Interesting!
