I've searched your posts in this thread and you haven't mentioned where Payne has rucked before at any level.
Apologies, i had answered 3 of your 4 questions in previous posts
Regarding Payne in the Ruck i just said in reply to your post " I would play/trial Payne over both." (referring to Fullarton & Casboult) so that did not answer your question

So i don't believe he has played in the ruck at any time.
I also don't believe he has played forward at all prior to his short lived semi final this year
If Lions don't get anyone suitable in trade week he could be given a chance in that role preseason.

And also no player gets paid in the amateurs but......

No, not at all

but regardless of nose rubs, envelopes or brown paper bags you're not able to pay a guy close to $120k when your team's cap is $200k.

She might already have a satisfying career. Regardless, I think the lure of being on a finals list will be a huge pull.

I would take casboult on min wage for a season. If we are that tight for cash and he’s the only viable option then we could do worse. Create competition for the second ruck spot. He played defence quite a bit last year and did ok there too. Good cheap and experienced depth option. Low risk high reward.

I believe a lot of posters are missing the point.

Casboult would not be signed to replace Fullerton in the best 22, so it’s not a Casboult versus Fullerton discussion.

He would be signed as a short term, one year reserve, who could come in to the team if there are further injuries to Oscar or our forwards.

We’re going to be missing Hipwood for most, or possibly all of next season. We are short on genuine experienced KPF depth.
Makes sense!

Where has Payne rucked before? I don't recall him ever playing ruck in the NEAFL or VFL.

What makes you so sure he will be quite ready for it? I have an alternative suggestion, how about instead of handing a role to Fullarton that he hasn't yet earned by merit, we sign someone for him to compete with, and if Fullarton is clearly head and shoulders above his competition, then he gets to start regularly?

He could also have a year of good health and give us the competent second ruck we need.

That would be nice. But how are you proposing we free up the cap space we need to sign someone for twice the money Casboult will go for?
Your right, Payne had shin splints in his first 2 years and missed so much football. Yes he was an enormous kid and it can happen carrying the extra bulk especially on harder grounds which Brisbane had in the dry periods around his recruitment. Yes rucks have shin guards but i cant recall him spending anytime in the ruck in the NEAFL other than in an emergency during a match.

You don’t pay someone 120k for the year and expect or assume they will be best 22.
He ain’t that good a player for us to think he will play week in and week out.
With injury and form of others he may end up in the 22 at times but Casboult would be coming here as depth without any doubt in my mind.

I think if we got Casboult on a reasonable enough deal he gives us insurance for not much cost when we expect to be highly competitive next year.

I also think he's improvable playing in our system.

Obviously there are reasons why he's not ideal but we don't look like having too many other backup choices.

Disagree on this one briz, IMO that would be the major reason for his signature, Daniher, McStay and Casboult would be the 3 forward talls with Casboult providing the ruck relief, Casboult would be a substantial upgrade on Fullarton for 2022 in that role. Tom could have a full season in the reserves to work on his craft.

Out- Tom Fullarton.

In- Levi Casboult.

The real value of Casboult is that he offers an option down the line when our ball movement bogs down at half back. We won’t have Hipwood for that in ‘22 and Joe needs to stay closer to goal.

We’re too often sedentary up the field when the opposition slows us down and if we turn it over, it often comes straight back into our defensive 50 with ease. Our midfield isn’t quick enough to respond, and our defence also gets caught out.

If Casboult can offer a relieving get-out-of-gaol mark ala Martin Pike, he wouldn’t need to do anything more. Dish it off to a runner going by and we reload.

I’m loathe to use the term, but could be a real ‘moneyball’ option for us. As well as a break in case of emergency

Agreed - not for base wage for sure.

I see the Casboult discussion has taken flight. Not a world beater but adequate cover for both the R/F and KF roles. And at a price point we can afford. I don't see to many other options that provide that cover for zero trade cost and minimal salary.
If Hipwood is our only KF unavailable for the bulk of next season and Fullarton is in as per last season, there is no ready to go replacement should one of them get injured. We could indeed put Harris or Payne forward but they are either starting 22 KB (or injury cover KB in Payne's personal worst case scenario). Do we really want to spend the year training Payne to play forward ruck or KF when we are also developing two other young men to play that F/R position in Lane and Smith? Two guys that will potentially develop further into a first ruck.

If we were to preference the back up first ruck role as opposed to the second ruck we could potentially do worse than Callum Sinclair. Not sure on his trade cost, fitness and salary. If fit and willing I can't imagine the other two elements being huge obstructions.

From a list management perspective: We have two first round picks which the club wants to use this year rather than trading them on (as per Swannie)

OUT so far: 2 spots.

Birchall

A. Smith

IN:

Kalin Lane - requiring upgrade to list.

Maybe - Madden to be upgraded (perhaps can remain on rookie list , however just postponing the problem for one year does not solve our tight list spots)

Maybe: - Casboult

Picks for draft: so far (-1)

Hmmm need more delistings:

Now as much as Casboult meets our current needs, the impact on player delistings is significant. It would mean player/s that the club may not want to lose will have to be axed.

It is very hard for us from a list management perspective to be trading any players in while we are in the so called premiership window, unless the player is at an A grade level. Otherwise it is strictly organic internal development.

My view is we should not be delisting Joyce and/or Ballenden to make room for Casboult.

Both Lane and Madden are allowed to stay on our rookie list next season Ballenden probably delisted off the rookie list and Ely Smith added Joyce and Brock Smith likely delisted not sure on the rumours of Casboult but we would have 2 draft choices if Casboult joined Us

Edit: I would love Us to pay out CEY‘s contract for next year with we needed an extra pick

Honest assessment is required to where we are at, where Levi is at and where those potentially to be delisted are at. I am not sure I would move Ballenden on for Levi.
Honest opinion does either Ballenden or Levi win Us the GF next season I don’t believe either does now if that player was Gunston rather than Levi I’d be happy to chase him very capable 50 goal a season key forward

Lane needs to be upgraded to a rookie or let go, there's no other options, thus making list spots even tighter.
The argument re: CEY is false economy. what happens next year when we have to find more list spots. We keep removing contracted players?
Please note. MY OPINION IS: We should not be delisting Joyce and/or Ballenden.

I wonder what Matt Eagles has been up to lately. Maybe he'd be keen to get back with the boys for a year on minimum wage.

Probably not, but do we go in with zero back up plans?

Gunston is out of our price range and doesn't really have the ability to go into the ruck if Oscar goes down.

We have pulled off some masterful recruiting coups in the last few years, which I think has left some fans thinking that there is some magical cheat code you can use every trade period to get the next Linc McCarthy or Jarryd Lyons.

There isn’t. The salary cap is real. Injuries have left us structurally exposed. Not every player you bring in has to tick the “would they be best 22 at every club in the competition” box.

Sometimes you have to plug a hole, particularly when you are in a premiership window, have temporarily lost a key pillar, and every fraction of a percent counts.

I don’t know if he’s married or has kids.

If he’s single, and can move in with another player and share rent, fair enough.

But if he’s got a family in tow, and has to rent a house, he’s going to have sfa to show for the year, except for maybe another $30k in his Super.
And possibly a Premiership medal [emoji1628]
