It gets worse next year with Gold Coast having three and Brisbane two players from their Academies highly likely to require early bids. That's why Gold Coast traded in a staggering 9 future draft selections for the 2023 draft. In case anyone's unaware all the non football state teams (teams outside of SA, Victoria and WA) can't select and bid match Academy players while the teams from the traditional states can't even select academy players until after pick 40. It's an absolute joke.
There's so much inequity in the draft, the AFL's main equalisation mechanism, it's a joke now.

GC and GWS aren't old enough clubs to have FS, plus what you mentioned above re academy picks.

If we want an equal draft, no concessions at all.

No FS, no academies, no priority picks.

This will pretty much be the case if they get rid of the bullshit discount. These teams are already getting a player ahead of their pick, why do they get to pay unders as well ffs.

In fact, instead of a -20% discount, there should be a +20% loading if you match any bid in the first round.

Brisbane having to raise over 5000 points to get Fletcher and Ashcroft whilst finishing in the finals seems more realistic.

As does adding 40% to what WB, Coll, Syd all paid for Darcy, JUH, Daicos, Campbell etc

I 100% agree with this, there should be absolutely no form of concessions at all, including FS.

Overseas comps would laugh at how rort it is.

Given the last few drafts if anything we need to make the top 10 picks and possibly the 1st round completely uncompromised.

I think whilst we should never lose Father/Son and Academies are still necessary for the Northern based teams these things are really messing up the draft.

The top selections need to be available for the worst sides, just leave the 1st round clean and after that if a Father/Son or Academy goes then let the first one be a normal selection without penalty and if there are multiples the second one and beyond can be taxed points.

It’s not good for the top selections to be practically unavailable, yes teams have to come up with points but those players are frequently the difference makers needed to even up the comp.

We certainly don’t need more Father/Sons or Academy options or you might as well scrap the draft.
Father sons and northern academies should be left as is, however the matching system should be adjusted requiring at least one pick to be used in the same round the bid is placed (or something along those lines). Getting guys like Darcy, Daicos and Ashcroft for a bunch of seconds and thirds is a rort.

NGA academies should be scrapped and replaced by a centralised, AFL run academy for multicultural players. There’s absolutely no reason that this responsibility should fall on the clubs, particularly when the better they do at developing a player the less likely they are to benefit from it. They had a chance to fix this system a few years back and instead they made it worse.

1. Remove the discount.
2. All academies equal rules.
3. Any matched bid, must involve a pick within 10x spots of the bid.

Ie: Brisbane would need pick 11 in order to match Ashcroft at 1. To get that, means they more than likely have to pass on Dunkley, or trade out players to make it work.

The two Brisbane Academy players I'm referring to are Billy Richardson and Bradley McDonald. They played in the NAB AFL Futures game on grand final day.
Here is the scouting report from the game for the Lions players if you haven't seen it.
Bradley McDonald.
Playing largely in the defensive half, the Lions Academy tall was another one of Team Houli’s intercepting threats. McDonald was strong in the air all game, out marking opponents well even when he wasn’t in a great position to do so. The only downside to McDonald’s game was his ball use at times, occasionally turning it over despite limited pressure, however with a year left until he’s draft eligible, there’s plenty of promising early signs.

Billy Richardson
One of the over-agers at this year’s Under 16 National Championships, Richardson was utilised behind the ball for Team Murphy and looked relatively comfortable there. Happy to possess the ball for as long as possible, he found himself under immense pressure at times but looked to work his way out with long kicks down the line. He was perhaps more efficient than expansive in those instances.
I’m well aware of who the two boys are.

I’ve watched a heap of Richardson all year.

I don’t remember watching McDonald in a single Lions academy team this year, and when he was picked for the U17 game, I asked “who?”.

As I mentioned in my previous post, there will be 3 or 4 Gold Coast academy kids, and at least one each from Sydney’s and GWS’s academy picked before a Lions kid at next year’s draft.

Save your whinge for the 2024 draft. That draft will be the most compromised ever with the amount of father-son and academy kid’s already showing for it.

Especially with the number of kids in the Gold Coast academy who have family links to Melbourne and other clubs.

Ffs post draft rumours.
The draft is alleged to take place over 2 nights. Although at times it may feel like it has extended for 2 weeks.

No… wait… that’s not conjecture.

Kicking often doesnt improve in a full time system.

He’s a better kick than plenty of AFL players. Humphrey made big improvements this season with his kicking and just as importantly, his decision making. He still tends to blast away as his go to, but further education will improve this further.

I've seen rumours the Swans are interested in Cowan, Charlie Clarke, Olli Hotton. We also rate Humphry and Phllipou and should either slide we'd take them without blinking
rumours??, or general knowledge/common sense

Let me help you out here. Humphrey has some elite AFL traits that are very rare. He hits the contest like a battering ram and has breakaway power exiting the stoppage. His contested marking is elite and gets multiple scoring opportunities every game. He will do the same against men. His kicking will improve in a full time system.

I have 0 faith Essendon will be able to do that haha

Cowan, Clarke and Hotton have all been linked to go in the second round. Swans likely to take 2 of them in the first round doesn't sound like common sense to me....
cowan and hotton both linked to go in first round most of the year. clarke early second to mid second.

it's also funny how pretty much every draft watcher has Darcy Jones as a mid/late second, yet BigFooty rates him a top-10 pick.

I'd be happy to get him, but he's 174cm and barely 65kgs. That's not a frame that holds up as a midfielder. Even Shai Bolton is a whole 10kgs heavier, and he still can get worried out of it with consistent contact in the guts. He'll be a wing/small forward at the next level and a lot of his current skillset is focused as a stoppage midfielder. He's got a brilliant upside, but there's a reason he's outside most people's top 20.

I am hoping for a Liam Baker styled player, might start off attempting to be a small forward, but could provide dash from the defensive unit. Not sure you can really select him in the first round.

Under AFL rules, if a NGA player doesn't get drafted, he can be signed by the club he is tied to as a Cat B rookie. I would take a guess that Adelaide don't rate him high enough to take at 23 (hence why they traded the pick) but don't believe he will still be there by the time Pick 40 swings around.

No, they flat out have no interest, they're just not going to say that publically. We don't have the list spots either.

Cowan going at the Swans' first rounder is a link I've heard.

Hotton has been touted to go as high as Carlton. He has links to Collingwood (beyond his father). The kid does have a good attitude and I believe Derek Hine rates him.

Charlie Clarke to GWS is almost certain should he be available when their early second round pick comes around. The club has interviewed him multiple times and Clarke does not mind moving.

Hotton has been a high first round/early second most of the year.

Clarke likely 2nd, but has had some talk about going in the first round most of the year.

Think only Cowan is the real bolter of those 3. Not sure I personally rate him a first round prospect but if a lot of clubs are now showing interest as an early 2nd that could dictate him going as a late first round selection.

GWS will no have a second round pick. Take that to the bank. Will use 1,15,18 trade 19 & 31 out and use late picks on academy kids
