Fox Sports too…

Both have McKenzie going to the Hawks at 7.

Outside of the top 4 Fox & Cal aren’t agreeing on much.

Cal mentions our selection will likely come down to Pou, Mckenzie or Tsatas with Humphrey an outside chance. No mention of any other possibilities. Fox has us taking Clark. Fox has Pou going pick 5.

Cal seems to be going against the grain with regard to Pou. Media seem to be set on Ess or Haw taking him.

Mark McGowan went first with us taking the player essendon don’t take.

He is a very good journo. So it isn’t Cal alone.

In that case they both must be fairly confident Mckenzie is off to the Hawks.

McGowan looks like he’s getting similar mail to Cal for sure:

“The Saints won’t be able to match a bid on Next Generation Academy talent Cam Mackenziebecause he is certain to be selected in the first round - but they may be able to draft him at their first pick. But the tall midfielder has other admirers in the top 10, most prominently Hawthorn, so it will be a waiting game for St Kilda’s list crew, led by James Gallagher. There are all sorts of scenarios that could eventuate, including classy midfielder Elijah Tsatas or big-bodied match-winner Mattaes Phillipou unexpectedly sliding down the order to them. It would be a surprise if none of those three was there for the Saints. There are some whispers St Kilda could trade for a second first-round selection, with Western Australian Elijah Hewett a potential target. They have also shown interest in the tall defenders in this range, and could take Lewis Hayes if he falls to them at No.28. South Australian forward-ruck Isaac Keeleris one option for St Kilda’s third pick.”

Does anybody else find it strange that clubs quite happily screw clubs by bidding on NGA's that clubs have had a significant hand in developing but then happily give other clubs a "freebie" by not bidding on F/S picks when the player is the next best player in the draft.

If Ashcroft/Daicos is the best player in the draft then he should be first player drafted, otherwise clubs are effectively giving an opposition club the equivalent of Pick 37 for nothing.

McGowan also leaning toward the Bombers taking Tsatas. This from the article was posted the same day as the tweet you quoted:

Not as much is likely to change if they go for Elijah Tsatas, but it would be a different story if they pick ultra-confident mid-forward Mattaes Phillipou. Coach Brad Scott met Tsatas and his Essendon-supporting family this week, and rivals believe they are more likely to select the classy Oakleigh Chargers midfielder than Phillipou.

Even if he doesn't play mid next year, that x-factor type player will always be a need so I'd hate to pass on one if we have the chance.
I agree.

If he is on the board. We will take him.

I just love the fig jam attitude. Sorely lacking across our playing list.

ST KILDA

Draft picks: 9, 28, 32, 47, 73, 81

List needs: Match-winning midfielders/forwards, elite ball-users, key position depth

Who do they get at first pick: Cam Mackenzie (NGA), Elijah Tsatas, Jedd Busslinger, Ed Allan, Ollie Hollands, Mattaes Phillipou

St Kilda’s first choice will hinge on the dominoes that fall before them, including which way Essendon and Hawthorn go, which makes it difficult to know exactly who they will land. The Saints have been strongly linked to quick and poised midfielder Cam Mackenzie, and it’s not just the Next Generation Academy tie that makes sense. Key defender Jedd Busslinger, 194cm bolter Ed Allan and running machine Ollie Hollands are others who they have shown interest in for their first choice. Don’t be surprised to see electric ball-magnet Elijah Tsatas, who wishes to remain in Victoria, slide all the way to St Kilda’s selection — and if he does, expect him to be snapped up. It’s a similar story for forward/midfielders Bailey Humphrey and Mattaes Phillipou, who would help address their lack of matchwinners, but both may be gone by then.

Who’s in the mix after that: Coby Burgiel, James Van Es, Jaxon Binns, Harvey Gallagher, Noah Long, Angus McLennan (NGA), Clay Tucker

It is believed the Saints are among several clubs looking to get another pick in the second round of the draft. The Saints are fans of speedster Coby Burgiel if he gets to 28, but he may not get past a host of suitors before them. The draft range of key defender James Van Es begins at their third choice at 32, while they have shown interest in 19-year-old distributor Harvey Gallagher, wingman Jaxon Binns and small forward Noah Long, who could all come into the equation in the second-half of the draft.

Late mail: While they are no guarantee to get Mackenzie through their NGA, they are likely to secure forgotten defender Angus McLennan as a Category B rookie. McLennan has endured a wretched run with injury but the 19-year-old, who has also played for St Kilda’s VFL affiliate the Sandringham Zebras along with NAB League footy this year, does have two other suitors.

“Essendon met with Tsatas & his Essendon supporting family”. This has me convinced they won’t take the Pou. Essendon do love drafting players from Essendon families. Such a Dodoro move.

ST KILDA
Draft picks:

Contracted: 37 (one category B rookie).
List needs: Midfield class, long-term ruck support.

Would love it if Clark made it to our pick

Haven't really thought about to a lot because I didn't think it was likely to happen but it looks like a real possibility now

If we grabbed another second rounder and our draft haul was:

Phillipou
Hewitt
Keeler
Van Es
Noah Long
McLennan (rookie)

You would be popping champagne and gringo2011 would be having to take our recruiters for an apology dinner.

He won’t be a mid next year though.

He will need 2/3 pre seasons before we can expect him to be or consider him a “mid”.
Same thing goes for just about anyone we take. There aren't too many that come in and play midfield from day one.

His versatility means he'd likely play a fair bit of footy year one though which is exciting.

I really hope we land him, he's exactly the type of mid we need.

Not really

If the NGA player is the best available and any club can land them it makes sense to take them.

In the father son scenario, even if you bid on them you can't land them. The reason they don't bid on them at pick one is because they'd want all the media and fanfare that comes with having a pick one in the draft.

Evej the player gets another $10k in their pocket.

I’d slot him in at high half forward. Let him roam around the ground. Similar to how this bloke played in year 1

Even if Coby Burgiel was one of our 2nd rounders (been linked to us a bit), we will have done extremely well.

Knightmare has Pou number 2 in his power rankings. Looks like he spent a lot of time in the midfield this year. Some decent numbers.

2. Mattaes Phillipou (SANFL - Woodville-West Torrens)

The son of Sam, Mattaes is a 192cm, dual position impact player who is arguably this year's most damaging prospect through the midfield and up forward.

As a forward, Phillipou hits the scoreboard at will, sets up teammates inside 50 with precise entry kicks, is a strong overhead mark, powerful ground ball winner and uses his pace to create meaningful separation on the lead and kicks goals on the burst.

Through the midfield, Phillipou is a powerful contested ball winner who regularly wins first possession at stoppages and displays a burst of speed and class with ball in hand. Phillipou's most influential performance this year came for South Australia during the Under-18 Championships against the Allies where he amassed 24 disposals, 17 contested possessions, six marks (one contested), five clearances, two goals and two score assists. The same dominant football was played by Phillipou against Victoria Metro where he was the most influential player early and picked up nine disposals in the first 15 minutes of play before leaving the field under serious duress and requiring treatment on his lower back.

Phillipou was a star performer in the SANFL this year with averages of 33 disposals, 8.3 inside 50s and 3.3 shots on goal over his last four SANFL Under-18 matches, and in his final SANFL Reserves match kicked a game-high three goals. With a December 27th birthday, Phillipou qualifies for this year's draft as one of its youngest. With his performances on the board, mix of attributes, influence on games across multiple positions, rapid rate of improvement and very late-year birthday, Phillipou arguably possesses the highest ceiling in this year's draft.

Phillipou at No. 2 is a decision unique to this draft board.
