Jez McLennan delisted by GC. Former first round pick small defender.
from SA.
We aren't exactly flush with small defender prospects (Chayce Jones our best, and he's not even a defender really)
Couldn't get a game in four years at a bottom side.

Pass

We're not desperate for spots. We have enough spots for all of the expected list changes - 2x rookie upgrades, Rankine, 2x ND selections. We just don't have spots for speculative DFA selections, or any other fantasy moves.

I think Seedsman will get the Gibbs treatment - moved to the rookie list, then placed on the inactive list. He'll still be at the club, just not on the senior list.

Do we? We're forced into upgrading Butts and Strachan this year, meaning we'd need 5 senior list spots to meet our minimum where we get Rankine + pick 5 + Michaelaney.

Currently we have 3 players out of contract on our main list (with 1 in Turner likely to move to the Rookie list).

Seeing we're hoping to trade contracted players out to meet our minimum, we're very desperate for list spots.

We need to trade contracted players in order to achieve our expected list changes - but that's not "desperate for list spots". Presumably the club is aware of these players' plans, and have been working with their management to find new homes for them for a while now.

While we're not "desperate for list spots", we certainly don't need/want to waste spots on speculative DFAs or other BF fantasy moves.

People keep assuming that we're planning on getting pick 5 + Keeler + Michelanney. At most, we're likely to get two of those.

Actually, we only have 2 on the senior list - Rowe & Frampton. Turner is on the rookie list, as are all MSD selections.

Given we have cap space surely we would go to 38 if we wanted the extra player.
Sure - but imagine that we're currently at 37 plus Butts and Strachan, who's status changes from rookie to main list players this off season.

That means we're ALREADY at 39 before delistings and trades.

Just for folks to keep in mind, I guess.

Same concept. Gold Coast underrated their own asset.
Not suggesting he's the right option, just pointing out there is a huge hole in our back pocket stocks with Luke Brown at the end.
Parnell is far from proven, and may be better suited to half back. Same with Chayce Jones.

I think we'd be better off going with either a draftee or a proven player

I mean even Ben Davis managed to play more games than McLennan

It's possible. Unlikely, but possible.

It seems to me that they're using the extra cap space to attract players from other clubs - last year it was Dawson, this year it's Rankine, next year JUH(?). It doesn't seem likely to me that they'd be filling the senior list completely, just because the salary cap situation allows them to.
Surely you mean JFH rather than JUH?

another one who doesnt take it serious enough - no way nicks is going near jez
?

Unless McLennan has changed a lot in his time up at the Suns that is definitely not the McLennan that got drafted, high character and leadership that saw him vice Captain the SA U18's.

Just don't see his type as a need, probably goes back to Central's and tries to get back on an AFL list via the SANFL or perhaps the Sharks in the VFL.

What does he offer that Mitch Hinge doesn't?
McLennan is a smaller, slower version of Hinge with decent foot skills and good leadership qualities really his best assetts?
Agree.
I hate hearing about ‘leadership’ as a reason to draft or recruit someone. Especially a speculative pick.

Priorities should be
1. Some kind of dominant attribute
2. Drive/competitiveness
3. Favourite colour
4. Which school they went to
5. Leadership

Pick leaders from the squad you have, except in absolutely extreme cases like Brisbane recruiting Hodge.

So you’re suggesting we’ll either not use our pick 23 or not match the Michelanney bid? That would be pretty shortsighted by us given we need more talent on the list.

What I'm suggesting is that we almost certainly won't be making 3 selections at the ND - a maximum of 2 is highly likely, and only 1 is a strong possibility.

The club (or its representatives) have noted the need for a top-flite midfielder with pick #5, so it's highly likely that we'll be getting Keeler or Michelanney, but not both.

While we currently have pick #23, there's a very good chance that we won't by draft day. We'll probably be trading in Rankine and trading out 5 players. No doubt there will be draft picks included in many of those trades, and pick #5 is probably off the table - so pick #23 is likely to be involved. I suspect we'll try to end up with 1x 2nd round pick, and use any other picks we have leftover to improve our hand in the 2023 ND.

Given where our draft picks will be, and our lack of senior list vacancies, it's quite possible that we don't even bother nominating Michelanney as a F/S selection anyway. We're likely to be out of the draft by the time his name is called, and it's unlikely that he'll make it through to the RD - so there's probably not a lot of point in nominating him in the first place.

He really wasn't a speculative pick though, looked a solid late 1st round early 2nd round pick after his year at Central's including good performances at League level and a dominant Nationals. Intercepting and skills were his dominant assetts
