I saw this format on the West Coast board and thought it might help understand our current list position

I think he has but that's probably more to do with his fitness levels...let's face it he's never going to be express.

You just can't afford to be slow in this game anymore unless you have other outstanding attributes to offset it.

Not many on this board will disagree with you that all 3 of Keays, Laird & Crouch cannot be in our midfield... particularly as we look to rebuild.

Denying Hately & Berry midfield minutes since Crouch's return has been a crazy big step backwards.

However, both Keays & Laird have performed consistently for our side & would be top 5 in our B&F. The same can't be said for Crouch who has been ordinary.

Your regular attacks on Keays, one of our better players has come across a little unhinged... as he is hardly the main problem with our midfield.

If you watch keays without the ball you’ll see he makes it easier for young guys to come in and develop as mids much more than if he wasn’t there

If you watch Matt Crouch he just makes it harder for those around him

Without Keays our midfield would be ALOT easier to move the ball against

Is he a good kick - No

Is it overplayed a bit - at times

Listening to him speak and watching his actions out on ground I could think of alot worse blokes for a talented young mid to come in and play with , now we just need some on our list

Doubt you'd get that if you're trying to push him out

People say Freo might chase Shane, but with Schultz/Frederick/Switkowski around, I don't see the need for them?

Whilst I agree with you largely on our midfield issues, I can't agree that we should complain about Laird and Keays performances. They bring their best footy week in and week out. We know their strengths and weaknesses, but its unarguable that they are performing highly against their personal skill sets. It's the coaches, Nix and mini-Neil that are the major problem. Fancy bringing Crouch back into that group at the expense of Berry & Hately's minutes in there. It's totally insane and if anyone wants to know why this coaching croup is destined for the scrap heap, look no further.

To me, it's pretty obvious that Hately brings more to us currently than Crouch does. Better defensively, bigger body, younger. We should absolutely be prioritising Jackson's midfield minutes over Matt's

When we begin to challenge, I'd be very happy with an inside-leaning midfield mix of Keays, Berry and Hately (assuming Laird eventually moves down back again by the time we begin to challenge)

Sloane was at the desk on AFL 360 and when asked what's the worst thing that could happen this week he said Tex to get a 3 year deal and take all the money so there wouldn't be any left for him for his next contract.


Which to me set off a few alarm bells

Can't believe how this guy skates through with no criticism, has been our worst captain by a country mile.

Pay his contract out and get him out of the club ASAP.

So if Luko and Rankine are now "certain" to be Suns for the next few years (thanks to the VFL), should we be focusing our attention on getting in Kysiah Pickett? He is out of contract this year, and to my mind has been far more consistent than either of formerly listed players. He also addresses our need for an influential small forward...and it is a move that would allow us to play Rachele in the mid-field (you know, when they finally work out Crouch has all the speed of particularly slow snail). We should also be looking (as Rendell said) to get in Brennan Cox (although note he is signed till 2024). Perhaps we could organise a swap for McAdam?

Hately surprisingly looked great as the inside MID ....offers much more than Crouch

Agree, he's quite composed. I'd even say that's part of the reason why he went alright (not great, due to that lack of speed) as a wingman last week

He needs to get more inside mid minutes than anything, though

Laird and keays would be a good 4th or 5th midfield banana’s in a contending finals side..

Theres nothing unhinged about pointing this out.

Unhinged would be thinking these lads are midfielders that can take us to finals success.

We havent played finals in 5 years.. the last two years we’ve come last and 4th last.. we are currently heading for another bottom 5 finish..

Our complete lack of class in our midfield, the engine room of any team, lead by laird, crouch, keays and sloane before his knee is the main factor in our poor results of the past couple of years..

Yet several here say sweet duck all about these lads performances, some actually constantly praise them regardless!, and choose to instead blame the youth and players with less than 50 games under their belts for our current predicament. Now thats the definition of unhinged.

I don't think anyone on here has ever said "these lads are the midfielders that can take us to finals success".

It is the buffoons in our coaches box who think that way.

Most on here would love Crouch out, Laird back to the hbf and Keays to be the experienced mid with the youngsters cycling through the middle.

It is OK to think Keays has a good game, we all know his limitations, we arent saying he will lead us to glory but he currently plays a role and I'd rather him in that role over Crouch, Sloane and Laird.

A player who is long in the tooth and injury prone and is already contracted for next season has publicly pushed for his next contract.

This is the exact entitled culture the AFC has promoted/enabled over the last decade plus.


On the playing side I certainly respect what he has contributed on field with us, been a great player. However those playing days are long gone and IMO he should've already hung up his boots.

On the captaincy side, IMO Sloane has been very poor. As much for his comments off field as his poor leadership onfield.

He's not going to be any better than what we currently have. He's slow, not athletic and has poor foot skills.

Yes good on him for showing improvement and he's performing better than Crouch, but do we want another permanent B grade mid with poor skills? How is this going to help us?

I know this is tough on the guy, but we gotta be real about the future of our midfield.

Having all 3 is fine for now but ideally I would only play 2 in the long term.

I don’t see a problem with it, as long as we surround them with classy users, both on the inside and outside

Ideally you rotate those three, plus two or three classier/more gamebreaking players through our midfield eventually

Schoenberg is very worrying, especially if the off-field rumours are to be believed

Pedlar I’m happy to give 12 more months, but if he’s not a regular in the AFL side by then, it’s gonna look ugly for our recruiting once again IMO

Nope, not concerned in the slightest. Jackson is exceeding his preseason expectations by the length of the Flemington straight, he's 10 times the player he was last season. Also, he doesn't need to be the polish player in our future midfield. We are suppose to get complimentary pieces around him, so he can provide the big body and clean hands. Both of which he's doing great over the last month.

Also, Not athletic? He's 191cm, 91kg, built like a Sherman tank with around 4% bodyfat and he covers the ground as good as anyone. I've been wildly impressed with his running capacity since coming back in the side. If he's not athletic i'd love to know who makes that cut for you!
