Nope, not concerned in the slightest. Jackson is exceeding his preseason expectations by the length of the Flemington straight, he's 10 times the player he was last season. Also, he doesn't need to be the polish player in our future midfield. We are suppose to get complimentary pieces around him, so he can provide the big body and clean hands. Both of which he's doing great over the last month.

Also, Not athletic? He's 191cm, 91kg, built like a Sherman tank with around 4% bodyfat and he covers the ground as good as anyone. I've been wildly impressed with his running capacity since coming back in the side. If he's not athletic i'd love to know who makes that cut for you!
Agreed. Hately has been basically the biggest plus for us this season.
We knew what we were getting with Dawson, Keays, Laird etc. Hately was on the scrap heap.

He's now looking like a permanent fixture of our midfield going forward. And a good one. That's priceless.

I would say he was under the scrap heap for many in here. Myself included.

Him resurrecting his midfield career from where he was at the end of last season is simply miraculous!

Yeah we'll see after he's played 50 games and he's not a shiny new toy anymore.
Mate he's been an underperforming "super draft" player who we got for nothing, is 4 years in, and was as low on the midfield totem as a player can get.

As far as toys go he was about as shiny and new as the rusted over 1971 Ford Pinto in my neighbors back yard!

I don't think anyone on here has ever said "these lads are the midfielders that can take us to finals success".

It is the buffoons in our coaches box who think that way.

Most on here would love Crouch out, Laird back to the hbf and Keays to be the experienced mid with the youngsters cycling through the middle.

It is OK to think Keays has a good game, we all know his limitations, we arent saying he will lead us to glory but he currently plays a role and I'd rather him in that role over Crouch, Sloane and Laird.
Throw in 2 classy under 25 mids and we’d have a decent midfield

Grunt and good defensive player in keays
Ground ball possession winner Laird

And some skill and run with the others

Also Hately Berry going through

2 v good players short unfort

Dawson and Rachelle bigs wins for 2022. Soligo could be too.
I'd say they're normal wins given what we spent on them, maybe the Dawson trade slightly better.

IMO a big win is getting a Charlie Cameron in the rookie draft

Tough assessment criteria.

Dawson a great pick up for Melbournes' first 2021. Surely he is a win for a pick 18. What is normal win for a pick 18?

Am I the only person concerned with Hately coming on okay?

He's not going to be any better than what we currently have. He's slow, not athletic and has poor foot skills.

Yes good on him for showing improvement and he's performing better than Crouch, but do we want another permanent B grade mid with poor skills? How is this going to help us?

I know this is tough on the guy, but we gotta be real about the future of our midfield.
Funny. I’m getting Scott Thompson vibes with Hateley as far as career progression goes. Here is Thommo’s progression from being drafted in 2001 by Melbourne. And before you whinge, Thommo was a prime mover in our flag push in 2012.

Normally when trading a pick 18 you get a pretty good player

Ok, so you think the Dawson trade was an average trade.

I would say you are way off in your assessment, you don't trade in the best player in your team for pick 18. You could say it's easy to be the best player in our team, but he was 3rd best at Sydney.

Yeah we should drop him for our fast, tall, athletic midfield prospect with elite skills.

I didn't say it was an average trade, I said it was a normal win. A good trade that we won and got good value out of.

You need a series of big wins to become a great team. Taking the best player in the league, getting great players for free (see Jarryd Lyons at Brisbane), or grabbing good players with junk picks. Those are big wins.

Cool, I don't mean to argue semantics and your point is clear, I put in average as you said it was as normal, I took that to mean no better, no worse.

I totally agree we need lots of big wins, it's just that I put Dawson and Rachelle as big wins because we would be a great team if we had every first-round on picks like them.

People complain that coaches forever favour experienced average midfielders who aren't taking us to a flag.

Can people not imagine Hately being one of those in the future? I can.

Berry also has average skills, but he brings more to the table than Hately. Keays is going to be around for a while and I don't mind this for a while. There's no way we can have Keays, Berry and Hately in our starting midfield going forward.

Agree re starting midfield

They can be part of midfield of 6-8 though
