Both costly in the end, however these are lessons you need to get into these young guys, he also bit too much off trying a banana from a set shot that went down the other end for a goal. This is what the VFL is for. Biggest concerns out of this are backline depth. We are in big trouble if our starting group go down. So disappointing to see Gould fumble almost every possession, and below his knees is a nightmare.
Yep. Backline & backline depth is shizen.

Shipley has real potential and was really good in defence.

Roberts got a ton of ball and fair skills but has only 1 leg to kick. Total left sided, two late turnovers due to having to go back into traffic to get to his left leg. Woeful that not a single coach taught him to have a bail out kick on his right side. Gave away the final goal for that reason and the free before that.

Sheldrick can find the ball at will but misses targets more then hitting them. Lots of polished required there. Maybe too quick release. (Early Mitchell). Get tackled maybe 15-20 times after finding the ball.

Bell is Bell.

Clark is still Clark. Pressure creator for teamates.

McDonald can much space for himself so may times but ignored in seniors due to other targets and too good for reserves.

Macandrew again showing progression not good numbers but 3 goals and good position and movement.

Ladhams, I don't know what others seen in him. Any player that responds to being asked to do more and says 'surprised by his coaches comments' shows he has a high opinion of himself. He appears to do just enough but nothing even close to a solid AFL player to me and that it what is saw tonight but maybe judging him too hard.

If Lewis Taylor was fully committed he would play AFL.

Gould appears mentally stressed with fumbling hands on marks and ground balls. Seems frustrated all the time.

Corey light framed and man handled a bit and only got 7 possessions.

Melican had some poor sections as usual.

Another lose after controlling the game and pi*#@ng it away.

The Knock on Taylor is that he is lazy. But he is also too slow for AFl.

I think it depends on how long Hickey is unavailable. If he is out for a few games, then I feel we probably need to back Ladhams to gradually improve in the seniors. (as long as he is close to full fitness). Rather than delay his debut till he has a standout reserves game.

I am not sure Amartey is a viable option as a full time ruck for a stretch of games. (assuming we still had Ladhams and Sinclair available for selection)

I am not sure it is all doom and gloom. We looked overrun in the 2nd quarter but seemed to fight our way back into the match and be competitive.

Probably better for the younger players development to play a close match against decent opposition. And have to execute under pressure and fatigue in the last quarter.

The Suns beat us, after we thrashed Footscray, whose senior side thrashed us, after we started the year 2-0. There is not much to be gauged from VFL results. Performances are what matter and I think there were plenty of promising ones, albeit in need of further development.

Ladhams is the real concern though. I thought he looked really off the pace. He didn't even need to be dominant, just solid enough. Staggering he performed like that knowing Hickey had gone down the night before and the spot was basically his to lose. Hope he comes good.

He might do a Shane Warne. Suck in the twos and star in the seniors.

I prefer to back Wicks to hit form. I think last game he still kicked a goal and assisted at least one.

Apparently he does a lot of structural defensive work off the ball like cutting off passing options. So I worry that another player may not be able to replace what he does.
He was on Daniel, who was incredibly damaging. His last 3 games have been ordinary at best. He has allowed his opponent far too much space and has not hit the scoreboard. Time to go back to the Twos and reflect on what actually makes him a good player. Ben Ronke came in and did twice the job he did.

Personally didn't think McLean nor Amartey tore it up to get into the side, still think it's hard to see them having more impact.

I'd be bringing McDonald back, probably have Amartey stay in to share the ruck with Ladhams if Hickey's out. McLean the one to miss.

If JMac is in, may not be any more changes to get Sheldrick or Roberts in. One of them can be sub though. Or whoever misses for JMac.
I don’t really disagree about Amartey/McLean as I’m still not sold on them either but Ladhams didn’t do anything that I felt would translate well to senior footy and I’d rather not reward him as I didn’t feel he was working hard enough.

He is just not a tap ruckman. Does not have much of a leap and does not attack the contest. The one upside is he wins some clearances but at no stage did I see how he was connecting with players around him.

It was irritating to lose. I did laugh as at some stages we had McAndrew, LMac, Reid, Sinkers and Ladhams all loping about. Land of the giants.

But I guess it is all about checking and ranking the understudies.

Ruck - I wish we had Moyle but we don't. The only genuine understudy ruck is McAndrew, the others are Fwd Rucks. (HMac, Amartey, Sinkers, Ladhams). McAndrew is raw as fresh sashimi.

Inevitably Ladhams will replace Hickey. The coaches will have seen enough to start instructing the mids on playing against a dominant Goldstein

I didn't think Ladhams was going to be our ruck solution long term, remember arguing that last trade period with a bunch on here. Hayes at Port probably the better ruck, but Pete was serviceable, still fairly young, and the better forward. Has a decent body of evidence from last year to suggest he's ahead of Amartey and McLean as that 2nd ruck/fwd (McLean's Cats game as a fwd the outlier). Amartey had a good ressies game last week, so got the nod, but wouldn't say either of them are showing more at senior level than what Ladhams has.

Unless we're rucking Sincs... I'd be bringing him in. We've got 3 who haven't shown a lot so far this year, so I'd go with the one more likely to help us win. Amartey was better 2nd half when in ruck, so he'd get in over McLean for me. McDonald returns.

I’d go with whoever can take a contested grab around the ground.

Reid.

Reid.
I wish.

Unfortunately Reid’s once extremely sticky hands appear to have deserted him. Used to be an exceptional one touch mark but that’s gone now.
