There are always the odd gem found in the rookie draft, but history suggests they are more likely to be a Will Gayfer than an Aaron Davey.
I have no idea if we made the right call passing up Charlie Dean, but our recruitment team obviously doesn’t rate him highly or else we would have taken him with a late ND or rookie pick, considering our need for another KPD.
100% this. It's a speculative pick. People are bestowing Chris Grant status on Charlie Dean before he has even played a single AFL game. The club clearly prioritised a coaching appointment over a speculative rookie pick. Given the effect the change in coaching staff has had on the group so far that could still prove to be a wise decision

We identified a lack of coaching personal especially at VFL level. To the point we made Campbell a coach during game days. Asked a few others if they could assist.

So it was a wise move and whether or not this has cost us an opportunity of drafting another player is a moot point. We had decided further strengthening our coaching panel was imperative to further develop our squad especially at the lower level.

It's not like the club wouldn't realise or understand the players available and not thought about what these type of decisions mean. I again like this decision, makes sense and shows we've matured off field and will do all we can to achieve continual improvement.
Which is all we can ask for.

Chris grant was actually a speculative pick - think 79

Anyway surely we all agree that our player development has been severely lacking for most of this century? The club's addressing it in a left-field way, I reckon we should be pretty pleased.
Was raised in the Paul Roos thread but surely we use some of his funds on lynch thus not having to take up a rookie spot

Nope, another 25 blokes got picked after 79 before his name got called out!
Pick 105 apparently, with another 5 taken as preselection's before the draft.

Mind you he was still a month away from turning 16 when drafted so probably not on a heap of radars at that stage.

For every gun pick up in the arse end of the draft there's 100 blokes who never left oblivion.

Our blokes said there was about 30 players we liked in the draft. If none of them got to the Bergman pick, we would have traded that pick out. .

What's it say about how high they rated this KPD crop this year, Dean one of them, if we lack some depth in that area and STILL didn't pick one. Probably because the ones available were no good.

Yep. Tom Lynch's coaching might be the difference in winning a flag vs not. I see it as a creative way of landing a key appointment. His coaching might be more of a known quantity than the potential of players in the rookie draft.

NORTH MELBOURNE

The plan has always been to use the vacant spot on the list on new development coach Tom Lynch, who crossed from Adelaide at the end of last season. This will allow North Melbourne to keep Lynch's salary out of the soft cap, which has been crunched since the start of the pandemic. Former Demon Marty Hore has trained at Arden Street all pre-season and was still in the mix for another opportunity until Jed Anderson returned to the club last week after complying with the AFL's health and safety protocols. Hore will play for North Melbourne's VFL team and could still potentially appear for David Noble's team as a top-up player in 2022.

THE PRE-SEASON supplemental selection period deadline is closing in, with just over a week between now and the final day on March 9.

Ideally we continue to follow Brisbane's path and have a 14th-16th place finish with a really healthy percentage. Bank another early draft pick, trade out 2023 R1 pick for something in this years draft and then shoot up to top 4 in 2023.

I hope we win as many games as we can in 2022. I'm not sure there will be many victories= 4 points. We're a young side and should we salute 8-10 times that would be massive.

I rode the spoon last season and the thought of doing that again makes me feel a tad uneasy. I think we will be around the bottom end of the ladder, but heck I'm prepared/hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

From a birds eye perspective i can see the value we have extracted from placing last, but as soon as we are playing in the season proper I'll be hoping tp win every game we play which is how I've always followed the team.

Definitely not posting to say i hope we finish in the bottom 4, but if we do then i really hope it is with a healthy % and we extract our last bit of high end draft capital before a surge up the ladder in 2023. If we finish up 2022 with 7-12 wins and a 9th-13th place finish i would be very happy but if it's 4-6 wins with a lot of close losses and not many blowouts it wouldn't be a bad outcome either.
