I do not understand the Meek over Lobb chatter.

People coloured by the fact Rory requested a trade; similar to how the opinion on Cerra has changed?

Lobb has been a whipping boy on here since his stutter step made him miss a few set shots. Wilson is a whipping boy since he got tackled HTB in the goal square against Brisbane. This board likes to write off players based on memorable incidents that stick out rather than any objective measure of their ability

I'm going to go to bat for Wilson being a whipping boy, he had a bunch of shocking incidents on the field the last month of last year, he earnt his whipping boy status fair and square. To say "tackled HTB in the goal square" is slightly understating that particularly event as well. He's also competing with a young NGA kid playing in the exact same spot who looked terrific, it's prime whipping boy territory

Meek was better than Lobb in preseason scratchies.
Not saying he’s passed him out yet but if it’s just the Rory Lobb of 2020 and 2021 that appears again this year it won’t be much longer before Meeks upward trajectory surges him past Lobb.

Along with Chapman and Frederick, and maybe Nod, I’d say that Meek is the most improved player on the list since 2021.
Has Lobb improved? Doubtful
Agreed and Meek looks like he's got a bit of ticker whereas Lobb is as soft as butter.

Lobb's ruckwork in the preseason games was really poor. In 2021 Levi Casboult had more hit outs last year than Lobb in the same amount of games. I like Meek's follow up work but it's a hard trade off in terms of contested marking. Tbh like Taylor keeps banging on about if Darcy keeps kicking snags and Meek breaks even in the ruck it might be a better combination.

Darcy was arguably the third best ruckman in the comp last year, Meek breaking even is a massive loss especially when Lobb isn’t as bad as everyone makes out.
That's pretty much how the club sees it I think. I hope Lobb becomes more consistent and the issue resolves itself but the preseason games weren't encouraging.

I don’t mind the expectations to be applied to Freo. The game can be brutal and if we want to be a seriously good side, improvement can be of the charts.
Tigers were 13th in 2016, no point sugar coating it, everyone was put on notice.

I'd be disappointed if the coach didn't instruct the team to use the wing on the far side of the ground from the interchange if the opposition is short on running power or injured.
Ok but we would be doing the exact same amount of rotations as the opposition( 75 a game). Using the wing away from interchange to direct play would only be of benefit if the team knew exactly when the opposition was doing a rotation and we weren’t.
To be honest it would be easier to exploit the changeovers in exactly the opposite way - for our team to direct play towards the interchange side of the ground when a player runs on (Pretty much what Stephen hill did against Geelong in a 2013 final to win us the game).

You are the only person I can think of who suggests they would prefer Casboult to Lobb. There may be others. Be interesting to hear.

I didn’t suggest that. I thought it was interesting
I think I see a forward/ruck differently in terms of expectations. They don't need to be a particularly good ruck, they need to compete. Someone recently proposed Treacy in that kind of role which I quite like, more for his mobility and football ability than any sense that he may win a ruck battle.

I wonder how much time Lobb spends training in the ruck position compared to Meek? Casboult (in his prime)? Rare to hear much about that in our training reports which are dominated by Meek/Darcy.

I wrote him off when he pulled out of a contest in the goalsquare, and pretended to be injured to cover what he'd done. It happens I get it - but to me that's a sign that his time at the highest level needs to wind down.

I’m not sure he pulled out, I think he overestimates his evasiveness. He often pulls the head duck move, and it’s being called play on, nowadays. His evasiveness is solely attributable to his elite pace. If he can wrong foot the opposition he’ll get free and make space with a short run and bounce. Late last year his pace seemed off, and his attempted side step saw him get crunched a couple of times, including the infamous goal square.

If his pace is back, it appeared it was, he should be fine and still
Best 22. My issue with him, is his body is sloppy for someone who’s been on an afl list for as long as he has. His strength is nowhere near where it should be for a late career player.

I wrote him off when he punched one of the Bulldogs on the dick when we were well in the game - giving away a 50 metre and goal - and totally arresting our momentum. If you don't have the body for AFL then you need the brain - sadly it appears he has neither.

Coach Q&A
Walker in frame for round 1 if injuries pop up.
Fyfe on track.
Sturt close.

If Lobb had floated a pass to Mundy under pressure instead of snap a goal, this board would roast him over it. Meek has come along very nicely, and as much as Lobbs consistency issues annoy me, he is significantly better up forward than Meek.

35-40 goals would be delightful.
It would be delightful, but its probably unrealistic. The most he's ever kicked in a season was 29 way back in 2016.

When the club was handing out contracts last year, they decided Ethan Hughes was worth signing up for 3 years while the season was in progress. Wilson had to wait until after we finished playing to get a 1 year deal.

Wilson's whipping boy status is just reading the tea leaves

Eric Benning sighted in the photos from today's training at Optus. Looking trim!

I like Hughes, but I scratch my head at that contract.

We don’t know the monetary aspec of the contract, if it’s 3 years at 200k I have no problem with it. He’s a solid lock down defender who can come in during an injury or covid crisis and play a solid role for the team, besides we probably owed him something for the number of times we’ve put him on the rookie list.
