Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

I've got Noober whipping up an Arie Schoenmaker highlights reel for us too. Reckon his kicking ability will see him turn into a really good player some time down the track.

The issue we'd likely have is finding a trade partner. It seems that this draft has around 8-10 potential 'A-Graders' (excluding Academy F/S etc) before it starts to flatten out - so trying to trade into that A-Grade echelon may be almost an impossibility.

The only mob who would look to trade out their 1st is of course GCS, but it appears there's many other clubs that could offer them better deals than we could.

I've got no doubt that our future 1st would be on offer, but it may actually be a trade on draft night if there's a particular player still on the board that we may actively trade up to get, even if it's overs - similar to what Hawthorn did last year with Weddle.
GWS at 9 would be a chance with them already having a top 5 pick from Richmond if they lose the last couple of games and slide down a bit more.

How does an academy pick effect the draft value of other players?
To my logic, someone like Caddy or O'Sullivan might drop from say #8 to #16? when the good academy players get selected, but these acc, players were very unlikely to be available to other clubs anyway.
So #8 becomes #16, but to all other clubs, their still valued as the 8th best player available.

I’d love Nate Caddy. But given he’s going to be out of reach, what about Ollie Murphy?

I only watched the one carnival game live at Moorabbin but I can’t say I was particularly impressed with Murphy. He just seemed a bit polite as a footballer, I prefer to see a key defender who is happier to get body contact and has clean hands in the air. Wouldn’t be my preference.

An interesting player. Not quite a key position, but possibly not dissimilar in “type” to Kempy. May be worth a shot with development. Love me a leftie and a point of difference type who may elevate in a professional system.

Might be in for some interesting trade scenarios which could bring a hybrid in to play.

He has upside, but I get your point. A little Lewy Young like. Beanpole with a debatable ceiling.

The robust boys O’Sullivan and Curtin will be gone.

Spot on, the actual draft number is irrelevant to the available player pool anyway…

I was so impressed with Curtin. He’s already got an imposing frame. Will be an asset from day one for whoever picks him up.

The more impressive fact is he plays midfield back in the WAFL. You have a key defensive player with midfield ability, Curtin is going to be a gun.

I reckon WCE would be salivating to get him on board. Hypothetically, if the AFL gifted North pick 3 for McKay, would they consider something like picks 3 and 16 for pick 1 and 35, if WCE flagged their intention to draft Curtin?

WCE would get Curtin and a second 1st round pick, Nth would get Harley Reid, Colby McKercher, and most likely Riley Sanders as an NGA.

Would be hard to pass up Reid, but based on needs, I would seriously consider Curtin if we had #1

Fell “in love” with him watching the “Futures” game last year, and he has done nothing to change that.

Sanders as part of the NGA is a crock is shite, that would basically be a comp pick in a typical AFL way.

I heard a suggestion on radio yesterday, maybe they would let North have the rights to match, but not pre-list. So they would have to still find the points for him.
Still a hand-out, but not quite at the ridiculous levels of some suggestions.

Certainly better than a free handout. Maybe rights to match, but no discount would be better again.

For those interested in Schoenmaker - Had Noober clip it up for me so give him some love.

Has huge scope to improve imo, his clear lack of fitness etc only makes me like him more as a player. Get him in a professional program eating good and training well and he has tools to be a serious player. Gets to good areas, thumping left foot and hits his targets very consistently.

Imo could be one of those Daniel Rich, Matt Suckling types who can get by with their one weapon at AFL level and be serviceable defensively given his height and size. If we have a pick in the late 30s/early 40s and he's still there I'd love to nab him as a project.

He’s a magnificent kick of the Sherrin.
Will be interesting to see how he tests at the combine.

He moves like a ruckman, though 😐
I think he moves pretty well considering he has a rig like Matt Preston and is a 194cm flanker. I see him ending up down back as a Hurn/Suckling type 3rd tall rebounder.

Definitely a project player who would take some years though.

Who love to trade up for Nate Caddy, offer this years first and next for pick inside top 10.

As long as we get a second/early third back in next years draft that’s something we should be looking at, another top 8 pick in this years draft for a position of need such as hff who kicks goals would round out the list nicely

We’ll be looking to move on our first at this stage anyway next year so try and use it to move up in this years draft is smart

If we trade Dow I’ll spew up
Jeremias will have a brain fart of monumental proportions if his precious No.3 Pick gets traded. We've all had to wait so long for him to play some decent footy. Not sure there's a spot for him in best 22 when everyone is up and about. Add to that all of Hollands, Binns & Cowan will be looking for midfield minutes within the next year or so whether that be inside, balanced or outside. Dow will want to play senior footy somewhere if he's not in our best 22.

It's all very well to list Sanders as an NGA, but that won't help if he goes between Picks 5-10.

Not sure I'd bother with Preston given the two Irish kids we've just picked up. Duffy's 194cm and runs as hard as Binns. Both Duffy & Monahan will be interesting project players.

Would be an absolute farce if the AFL allowed Norf to pre-list him, but who knows with the AFL. Probably something that Gil and Clarkson will chat about on their next coffee date.

At the absolute most, if they don't gift Norf with a priority pick, at least make them bid for Sanders similar to GCS - so they get access but actually have to spend some draft capital to acquire him.

Yeah agree in part. I mentioned earlier, between Schoenmaker, Collard and the Irish boys I think theres a bit too much risk in that group. Every chance none of the 4 make it so I think we'd prefer safer options at the draft but I still like him as a prospect.
