Ladder

1. Melbourne Demons
2. Richmond Tigers
3. Geelong Cats
4. Carlton Blues
5. Sydney Swans
6. Collingwood Magpies
7. Port Adelaide Power
8. Fremantle Dockers

9. Gold Coast Suns
10. Brisbane Lions
11. Footscray Bulldogs
12. St Kilda Saints
13. Hawthorn Hawks
14. Essendon Bombers
15. West Coast Eagles
16. North Melbourne Kangaroos
17. GWS Giants
18. Adelaide Crows

1. Melbourne - Back to full fitness, I think they'll be somewhat unstoppable again. Saw Richmond falter the year after their breakthrough premiership before bouncing back, and I think Melbourne will do the same and most likely win the flag in 2023.
2. Carlton - Primed and ready to go, and will make a massive leap next year.
3. Brisbane - I think we will be significantly better with the addition of Dunkley and Ashcroft. Coaching uncertainty is the only potential disruption here. Haven't been confident to back us for the flag any of the last four seasons, but feel like 2023 is the year that the stars may align for us.
4. Western Bulldogs - They will finally have strong key position players next season with Darcy developing, JUH maturing, Jones back on board, and Naughton freed up to not carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. It's been their missing piece for some time.
5. Gold Coast - There have been so many false dawns with the Suns, but I think this is finally the time for them to make a statement.
6. Adelaide - Certainly the biggest call here, but generally at least one surprise team from outside the 8 jumps in, and I think it might be them. Have really loved their build in recent years, and think their forward line will be very hard to contain with Rankine in there.
7. Geelong - Still strong and thereabouts, but with less drive now that they have finally won the flag they have been chasing.
8. Sydney - Recent history suggests that teams who lose grand finals by big margins struggle the following year. If any club is professional and talented enough to defy this trend, it is Sydney - but I thought their ladder position was probably a step ahead of where their actual build was this year anyway.
9. GWS - Still so much talent on that list, and I think Kingsley will help to unlock it. I reckon they'll spend most of the season in the 8 before slipping a bit as the year goes on.
10. Fremantle - Couple of steps back with their list changes, before bouncing into the top 4 in 2024.
11. Port Adelaide - Pretty similar season to 2022 on the cards, which I expect will see the end of Hinkley.
12. Collingwood - Loved watching Collingwood play this year so this prediction is with no sense of joy. I just think this season was something of a fairytale run, and can't see them repeating it.
13. West Coast - Slightly better than this year on the back of their mature players, but not noticeably enough to make too much of a difference.
14. Richmond - This one may make me look stupid, but I feel as though their list now is entering a phase of slipping back. Not sure Taranto and Hopper will make much difference to that.
15. Essendon - They could also be a surprise packet under the right coach, but hard to back with any confidence.
16. North Melbourne - Small steps forward.
17. St Kilda - Not sure Ratten will survive 2023 unfortunately. Big fan of his, but their list looks in a pretty tricky state.
18. Hawthorn - Mitchell did an outstanding job in 2022, but if the rumoured outs (Mitchell, Gunston) come to fruition, they will struggle. That mature talent has kept them competitive at a stage of a list build where you often wouldn't be.

I think they have a significant coaching advantage over those other 2 teams, which should keep them in good stead. Also young, but that could be a double-edged sword and scar them
Yes, good list and well coached.

Btw, I should have included Adelaide with the Giants and Footscray as GF hidings.

It's weird as a fan of the premiership winning side the main excitement probably has worn off already.

The Sunday you just watch the footy shows and get the paper/internet stuff then try and find merch/stuff on that day.

The part you want is the time from when you realise you're gonna be premiers to about an hour after the siren.

After that it's weird calm happy but quiet vibes.

Saying that...

1. Sydney - shocker GF but their list is excellent and improving
2. Geelong - More talent coming in, they won’t drop off
3. Brisbane - Dunkley is a big get for their thin midfield
4. Melbourne - still up there
5. Collingwood - very well coached and still plenty of experienced players.
6. Richmond - Still good and Taranto and Hopper fix an area of need
7. Bulldogs - should be higher with their stacked midfield and talls coming in, but they’ll underdeliver again.
8. Gold Coast - cautiously picking them as a riser to finals, no excuses
9. Fremantle - I think we go back before going forward. Youngest team in the comp with the outs/ins, scary in a couple years
10. GWS - another bolter and could replace GC in the 8. New coach new energy, will show up Leon Cameron big time.
11. Carlton - their Brownlow and Coleman contenders will carry these underachievers again, but they will underachieve again.
12. Port - no man’s land, Hinkley finally sacked.
13. Adelaide - list is still too thin
14. St Kilda - Going nowhere
15. West Coast - could bounce a little if they keep their older players fit but their list of young talent is dire.
16. Hawthorn - Bits and pieces of a decent team but not enough.
17. North - Clarko won’t be there and they’ll still be way off
18. Essendon - rabble

How are people tipping Melbourne to win, coach and forward strategy an absolute dog’s breakfast.

Yep, that forward line is a real worry. I'm surprised how many have Brisbane in the top 4, they'll get Ashcroft and maybe Dunkley but they've got other issues elsewhere as well.

Carlton and Richmond are 2 that could go deep in September if they stay fit.

Could see them both in Prelims say v Geel or Syd

Tigers add Hopper and Taranto to their midfield with Lynch firing and the Blues continue their rise up the ladder.

Like what? Midfield was by far our most pressing area of need which will help significantly having Dunkley and Ashcroft.

I don't know much about your list and who is coming up, but you need some KPD help. Gardner and the third tall back you play aren't good IMO. Too immobile with Andrews

Agree with 99% of the list. I think you're right about us (Freo) taking a backwards step given the changes and expected losses, but it does depend on the off season; I could just as easily see us threatening top four due to natural improvement, potential incoming talent (including a fully fit Fyfe) and improved cohesion (there was clearly some unsettled players in the back half of the year).

Carlton I have to disagree. I'd love you to be right, but that was year 1 with a new coach; they'll improve next year and you'd think they'd be hungry after missing out by so little. Could be anything next year, dangerous side.

Interesting that so many expect a down year for Coll and don’t realize “process” and not “luck” was the reason for success in 2022.
Pure luck can’t explain such a long winning streak.

True, but generally games decided by small margins do have an element of luck, a bounce of the ball, a bad umpire's call, a few moments here or there. There's also something called regression to the mean, "the idea that rare or extreme events are likely to be followed by more typical ones." - basically, all those close games that could have gone either way that they won the majority of (extreme event), a few moments go the other team's way and they lose a few of them (more typical event) and drop a little.

They could certainly improve again in 2023, but with a likely harder draw coming for them, it wouldn't surprise if they miss the top 4. Remember from outside this year's top 4, teams like Brisbane, Freo, Carlton, Richmond are all going to be looking to improve strongly and contend for top 4, not to mention smokies outside the 8 like Gold Coast, Port Adelaide who history shows some sort of bottom team makes a big jump every year.

It wasn't all luck, but there was a component of it.

Ironically, the team that had an extraordinary number of close wins during the H&A lost their two finals by 6 points or less.

At the end of the day, you were a 104% team, which is a reflection of your quality.
