Absolutely. But EVERY SINGLE CLUB isn't doing a full rebuild for the first time in 30 years and has the youngest list in the competition that means there should be no expectations on winning.

Its amateur hour for a team that has no chance of finals to move a midfielder to the forward pocket because his shoulder is too banged up to play midfield.

But I am glad we played Doedee the last 3 weeks after refreshing him in round 20 on a bum shoulder that required surgery. It saved us all the headache of having him signed up to an extension and being fit and firing for a big 2023 rather than trying to give himself the best chance to play round 1.

“With the injuries that I’ve had and the surgeries I’ve had I knew I wouldn’t be able to commit to negotiating the contract stuff without being fully involved…

“I want to put that back, I want focus on my rehab, make sure my shoulder’s right, give myself the best chance to play round one and then figure it out from there. I’m on path in that regard… and the contract stuff will follow.”

Its a bullshit answer. If Rankine didn't come we still wouldn't have re-signed Rowe. We valued pick 50 over Rowe for goodness sake. We could have put him on the rookie list if we wanted him. Picked him when we lost McAsey and Seedsman.

I can't believe you still going on like a broken record, everything or so hard to understand.

Playing with injury is an important part of footy and demanded by Burgess.

Doedee isn't the finished product, he has a lot to learn and needs as much game time as possible.

And also without the experienced guys there, the young guys won't even get a semblance of a gameplan going and so will learn nothing.

Yes, not every decision the club does to play injured players ends up correct, but lets not pretend that there's no case at all to playing them.

The whole mid season draft work by us was completely baffling from start to finish

Firstly picking an injured player

Then delisting him at first opportunity

It was kind of like a mystery draft where we just plucked someone out of the hat with no planning on why we were doing it

I believe they did it so this year when we don't pick up someone in the MSD people won't say "why not, it was a free pick", they will be relieved we held ourselves back from an even stupider decision, like picking an injured guy

Interesting. Then why did we rest him rounds 20 & 21 to freshen him up for a "big run" home?

Game time is great. Whats not great is trotting him out for 2 meaningless games against North and Port (both eliminated from finals), just to delay offseason surgery further and give him less of a preseason.

As I have said - individually the selection decisions (Crouch, Rowe, Davis, Doedee, Keays) aren't shockingly terrible, but when they are combined they are significant.

Any examples of a correct decision in playing an injured player in a team that has been eliminated from finals?

Bad ones in the past 3 years (IMO) have been - Talia, Doedee, Keays.

Does anyone know when the first mock drafts or talent orders come out for this forthcoming batch of draftees?

Am I right in thinking there's likely several South Australians likely to go in the first 30?

With us having 3 and possibly more picks its something Im pretty keen to keep an eye on.

Ive seen them as early as March, April.

They start taking real shape around July, from here its a bit of jostling for ranking in the top 30.

AFL 2023: Why the go-home factor is starting to turn for Crows and Power

SA and WA clubs have for years had their interstate players picked off by Victorian rivals. But the ‘go-home factor’ is turning. We go inside to find out why – and what it means.

Is the “go-home factor” starting to turn the other way?
It has been well documented Victorian clubs have been able to plunder interstate clubs and lure back players to Melbourne and the state with ease.

But are South Australian and Western Australian clubs now getting their own back in the recruiting race?
Last trade period, Port Adelaide was able to bring No. 1 draft pick Jason Horne-Francis back to South Australia after just one year at North Melbourne.

Adelaide has got South Australians Izak Rankine, Jordan Dawson and Jackson Hately to West Lakes from interstate clubs. But are clubs such as the Crows, Power, Dockers and West Coast starting to benefit from this after years of nervously waiting to see if a Victorian player would ask for a move back home?
Former Crows and Collingwood recruiter Matt Rendell reckons so.

“It is a factor, the only change from when I was there was that I had trouble trying to get guys back (to Adelaide),” he said.

“I got Sauce (Sam) Jacobs back but he was fourth in line ruck at Carlton so he was looking for opportunity but it was a struggle to get them back.

“But now they are getting a lot back, which is a credit to them and shows that they have got their footy clubs right.”

The Crows in particular were hit hard by Victorians wanting to return home – Patrick Dangerfield and Jake Lever to name two.

Crows senior coach Matthew Nicks said it was good to be on the other side to get Dawson and Rankine in consecutive years.

“I think South Australia is just a magnificent place to live. I hope we can keep it a secret,” Nicks said.

“It is nice to have that, that young South Australian footballers want to come back.

“There is a lot that goes into it, it isn’t just the go home factor.

“I think it is a real credit to our recruitment and list managers that they are able to do the work to get these players back and prove to them that this is the footy club to be at.”

The Covid-19 pandemic and closed borders reinforced the importance of family for many, and has played a part the decision of footy players about where they might want to play.
Because of the go-home factor, clubs have had to alter their approaches to recruiting.

Like Brisbane, the Crows and Power have had success with getting country Victorians to settle in a new state.

“I tried to concentrate on home grown and Vic country really because the Vic country kids have no real attachment to Melbourne,” Rendell said.

“They like Adelaide, smaller and easier to commute around so they don’t mind Adelaide and they have no real attachment to Melbourne which was what I tried to concentrate on.”
Nicks said the Crows would continue to pursue the best players, regardless of where they were born.

“I think if you look at our list and look at the balance of South Australians to interstate players we’d probably be adding in that space,” he said.

“We will pick the best talent regardless of where they are born or where they grew up but someone who is familiar with the state and understands what comes with playing footy in South Australia it can only benefit.”

Rendell said the SA clubs would already be monitoring the local players drafted by interstate clubs, such as Mattaes Phillipou who was drafted by St Kilda with pick 10.

“No doubt, he is obviously highly rated,” he said.

“I would be astounded if they didn’t make a call to his manager a minute after his name got called out by St Kilda.

playing with injury isn't demanded by burgess, that's become an urban myth. What he actually said is that he'd build resilience by having players continue to train at intensity with injury that would normally have them taking it easy. And yet, we continue to play blokes who can't train at intensity and instead are cotton wooled to the weekend. That is the opposite of what burgess was saying.

Every club does it and the vast majority of players are managing some kind of niggling injury.

You gotta get the management right, but every club is trying to do it.

I'm sure by late last year most of our young players would have been carrying small injuries, but we kept playing them to give them consistent game time and further development.

Almost every player would be dealing with some form of discomfort, not sure why you think stating the bleeding obvious adds to the discussion. Not all injuries are equal and nor is the cost:benefit to keeping the player on the park. Pleading that, "but, everyone does it", is simple and without nuance. Which other club played a senior KPD into premature retirement with something as obvious as a torn meniscus in a spoon year?

Did these young players require surgery after the season like Keays and Doedee? Were these young players heavily down on form (Doedee) or forced into another position because of their injury (Keays)?

You asked for an example of a correct decision in playing players through injury.

By the end of last year, probably 25 to 30 players would have been managing some kind of injury, including many of our young players who would have been hitting the wall.

Despite that, we've now had a preseason with the vast vast majority of players completely injury free and having a full preseason - as Bigman has said in his recaps.

It would be one of our least injury-impacted preseasons in recent memory.

But you keep chucking handfuls of shit around mate - no worries from me.

Yes. And you didn't give me any examples. A vague "most of our young players were carrying small injuries" doesn't cut the mustard.

No debate on the preseason. We have been absolutely kissed on the D1ck by the injury gods the past 2 seasons. Doesn't change the poor decisions by the club nor the original argument that we shouldn't have played Keays / Doedee.

It would be one of our least injury-impacted preseasons in recent memory.

But you keep chucking handfuls of s**t around mate - no worries from me.

Its weird. You keep suggesting that we shouldn't have played Dawson, yet act like I am over the top. I just think when evaluating Nicks as a coach - his selection issues have been a problem. He has done a bunch of good things too, but he has been far from flawless.

I'm genuinely not sure when I said that?

I'll also agree that there have been errors made by Nicks - I guess I've always assumed coaches will make errors though, because you're balancing really subjective things. It's not a black and white science.

Surely today's announcement doesn't increase the chances of Doedee staying
I wouldn't read too much into it.

Over the last few years it's been more evident that while Doedee is a strong leader, he's also very much his own person and isn't as close to the playing group as others.
