I'm trying not to be salty, was telling everyone he's getting delisted half way through the year but still cant help but be shitty we seemingly cant hold on to any depth or fringe player. Pretty frustrating

Also cant help but feel we might see yet another ex-docker in a grand final next year as a key piece

Yeah, But Amiss will destroy him.

I am one of the few who thinks Hamling is a like for like replacement for Pearce.

Outside the box - but could we keep Hamling and trade Pearce, get a second rounder for Pearce?

Otherwise, offer him two years with a trigger. He can play, is a solid person and Pearce who he is depth for, hasn't has a great injury history either. He is one we should keep.

Even on the same contract length and coin, Hamling would want to be starting B22 in the AFL. He doesn't deserve to be toiling away for Peel hoping for a Freo injury.

Pearce is better, younger and Captain. Not sure why so many around here value the blokes not getting games so much over the blokes playing AFL against AFL players. There is a massive difference.

The potential of three years is outstanding for Joel Hamling and his family. I would hope that Hugh Davies is a similar performing player by end of 2024 at a third of the price.

The only negative side of it is that Joel Hamling was paid a lot of money for a long time where he was in rehab, we never got value for that contract when he had the free agent for life status applied to him by the AFL after we traded for him - we had to extend him knowing another club would buy him from us without a trade needed.

It was all fine as long as he was available for us, but he didn't stay fit and it's unfortunate for everyone.

I'm glad he got that win at Geelong.

It's sad to see Hamling go, but there's no way I'd be happy with The Freo giving him 2 with a trigger for a third. Sometimes you just can't keep the depth.
Best of luck to him.

No, I wouldnt want to either, 1 with a trigger MAYBE but it would be nice for once for a depth player to stick around. Particularly one who just had a very nice contract he was injured through 60%, is from WA and is over 30

Yep, he's also depth that has barely been required. Our medical team has been huge the last 2 seasons (Fyfe the outlier) and if they can keep it up, he won't be required next season. I wonder if it's almost time to start rolling dice on injured good players to bring over on the cheap and fix up like Brisbane.

Moving to positives, I am very excited to watch Davies get a gig next year here or there. Wasnt his best game in the grand final but I still think his growth during the year was fantastic. A full preseason is going to be massive for him

Sure Edmund. Saints aren’t in anyway concerned about losing Coffield. Has played zero games in 2 years, offered only 1 year contract. Reports indicated Saints won’t stand in the way for Coffield leaving for new opportunities. Is a similar situation to say Tucker except he was under contract. Similar with respect that we did not stand in his way and facilitated a trade.

As for Henry he had a multi-year contract offer on the table from Fremantle. Henry had multiple suitors in Vic interested in him and the Saints recruiting boss tried to select him with a bid whilst at Carlton at pick 9.

Henry in and out in 2022 with 7 games but played well in WAFL in a new Wing role. Henry played 16 games in 2023 and all games after the bye. Started off a bit shaky but after returning to WAFL returned after the bye and for the season over 20 possessions and exceeded 30 possessions against Essendon, WB and Port Adelaide, ie started to really break out and show his talent.

Coffield the best that could be considered for him would be a third round pick.

We are looking at a second round pick. I’m sure we’ll settle with that being in the 20-29 range (after compo picks allocated) but will want it up the top end of that range. I’m not sure how far up the top end Saints can get. Other option is we settle for F2. If the Saints can get us a top 25 pick (after all the Free agency compo allocations) then I’m sure we will shake hands. Happy to throw them back the Carlton third round pick if needed as we won’t use.

Quite a few compo picks to be allocated. Doedee - is he band 2 or 3? Gresham - band 2 possibly. Some shenanigans so Saints get band 1 (can’t see that happening given the outlay Essendon are giving for Ben McKay).

The main compo picks that will affect Freo I reckon will be as follows:
  • McKay (Band 1 - pick 3)
  • Gresham (Band 2 - pick 21)
  • Doedee (Band 3 - pick 30)

James Jordan has been allocated Band 4 (end of second round). This will and the other compo will push back our current third round pick from 41 to around 45. Flynn from GWS prob around that band 4 as well, which will push back 45 to 46.

If we’re lucky to get a third round pick compo for Hamling it will likely be around pick 49 or thereabouts. So nothing that special. There is also a couple of other free agents I’ve likely missed.

Happy for Hamling, the KPD market is ridiculous and he's taken full advantage of it.

Josh Draper almost debuted before groin/thigh issues later in the year stifled his continuity. If he can get a full pre-season in, and bulk up a bit, can see him forcing his way in or being ready to go when we need him.

If we could get a high enough is there any chance we could get Croft if he doesnt nominate the dogs?

My god this is amazing.

Only possible way you could have improved this would be to put Bar-rat’s head on Hutz. But look I give you 9/10.
Didn't want to validate him with that much effort.
