Definitely agree Martin needs to be read the riot act about the security of his spot in the team but there is no way his best is “top 20 in the comp good”….and the stats back it up…in an 8 year career he has never made an all Australian team or squad.

At this stage in his career he is what is he is which IMO is “a good slightly above average footballer who’s body and mind aren’t strong enough to consistently play at very high level in this league”. Once you accept this then you can probably appreciate he still has a contribution to make to this team.
Spot on, he does some unreal things but doesnt do them consistent enough and can have half's of football where he is completely irrelevant. After 8 years in the system, we still talk about his 'potential'. If we are to become the team we all hope we will be, we need players we can rely on week in and week out. If Martin doesnt start the year well I would be inclined to put a line through him and move on.

Didnt realise we had so many players OOC this year, especially so many of them with question marks and yet to establish themselves as best 22 players.

Definitely gone at end of year
  • Ed Curnow
  • Lachie Fogarty

Probably gone
  • Cunningham
  • Akuei

Need to have big years to get a contract,
  • Kemp
  • Dow
  • Marchbank, just needs to stay fit
  • Philp

Possible Trade/ Choosing to leave
  • TDK, personally i think he establishes himself in the side and wants to be around, will sign for much less than is offered elsewhere but think he stays.
  • JSOS, this is the interesting one, is a RFA and if our offer to him is insulting I can see him exploring his options.

Stays
  • Motlop, sign him up for life, kid will be a star
  • Honey, prob a 1 year extension, if he plays 10+ games maybe 2.
  • Plowman, 1 year deal
  • Young, 3 year deal
  • Pittonet, if he finishes the year as #1 ruck then give him 3 years, if he is 2nd choice a 1 year extension.
  • McGovern, he owes us and should sign on significantly less coin.
  • Newman, 1 year deal
  • Doch, Bleeds blue
  • Durdin, hopefully establishes himself in the best 22
Nice summary, and mostly agree.

Akuei can stay as a Cat-B for another year, so unlikely to be gone (unless we get two better Cat-B prospects).

Philp has been put on the Inactive List, so won't be having a big year. And sadly, I'd agree, he's not likely to get a new contract. I'd swap him on your list with Cuningham, who needs a big year.

O'Keeffe should also be on this list, and you'd expect him to earn another contract as a long-term proposition.

I'd have Owies higher because he offers the most forward pressure of all our players. I suspect he has other tricks we haven't seen yet. His biggest weakness is kicking over 35m.
I don't think he was excelling at any other stat other than tackles inside forward 50... wasn't a leader on pressure stats per se, which suggests he had the wherewithal and agility to get it done at the bottom of a F50 pack rather than blazing about applying more genuine pressure.

That's also a massive weakness. I want him to be trialled in midfield at hte VFL level, and see what comes of it, because I think his ability within congestion is excellent and his hands are great. He'd be on the smaller side for a contested mid, but I think the bigger issue would be his endurance. Might as well find out!

What KPIs are you setting for Philp in his season-long rehab program? :p

Akuei is Cat B, so it's a separate list, and he's currently the only one on it. Would come down to any related acquisitions we have in mind and his progress this season.

I'm more bullish on Kemp and Cuningham than you now that we've finally acknowledged our training programme issues, and interested to see the results for Dow and Marchbank on the back of it also. We're seeing some positive signs, but who knows what the next 8 weeks will deliver.

RE: Pittonet and McGovern, this is not the kind of logic that should be determining our contract offers. McGovern deal should be 1 year with a 1 year option if he's showing signs of turning the constant soft tissue injuries around, while our ruck division needs to actually improve, so being in the bottom tier of AFL rucks while winning a position battle means absolutely nothing, especially if he isn't fixing his chronic leg injuries.

What position does narkle play? Would we consider giving him a lifeline?
He's Fogarty with an eye catching haircut.

Centre mid who doesn't really excel at anything.

People mistake him for a small forward because of his first nations background.

Where is our new player... Why haven't we got him yet!!!

i’m beginning to worry I might be agreeing with you.

Phew - they left it to the last minute, but we’ll done to the recruitment team - pulled the right trigger.

What I love with the recent additions is that apart from skills - they have a strong work ethic and want to be at the CFC - which is great to see

Now bounce the ball already!

I really like this call. His position in basketball was the lead guard, the position more than any other that requires the ability to think a play or two ahead of the game.

Surprising, this correlates statistically well to how he's gone about his football. Getting to the right spots and places at the right time in order to apply his pressure.

His biggest weakness for mine is lack of penetration on his kick that results in his struggle to apply scoreboard pressure as consistently as we'd like. If he could thrive at the level as an inside mid it would alleviate his biggest weakness whilst allowing him to play to his biggest strengths.

Would not be a bad idea at all and given our relative strength (when healthy) in the forward line we'd be losing nothing to give it a chance. Much more to gain than there is to lose by trying it out in the VFL.

IF there's someone with the determination to make the most of it it's him.

Yeah totally agree with this. Would be keen to see him trialled there.

Might be jumping the gun on this, but here goes ...

I've really enjoyed our recruitment of Hewett and Acres. I think it's a smart strategy to target workmanlike players that are undervalued at strong clubs. We seem to bring them in for fairly modest contracts and give up very little in draft compensation. Still reckon we need a couple more of these types to round out our best 22. Maybe a small forward, ruck, or winger.

Who are the restricted or unrestricted free agents we could target at the end of this season?

Ones I like for different reasons

Dylan Moore, Himmelberg, Daniel McKenzie, Redman
