My concern with Ben McKay is the injury history - 52 games in 7 years - especially given our recent history with high priced injury prone recruits.

Mitch McGovern: 89 games in 8 years plus yesterday

Ben's record doesn't exactly set him apart as more physically resilient than the players so many want to get rid of.

It's hard to fathom Gov really is durable when you compare him to that lot.
With Williams that's a lot of salary tied up if we go down that path.
Holey smoke that's an eye opener consolidating my thoughts on not wanting him.
With McKay his intercept marks are really inflated when you consider how many times the ball goes in Norfs backline.

is as a footballer, just 10 pressure acts and 0 tackles last night, for mine he’s not quick enough to play as a pressure forward (can anyone ever recall him laying a genuine chase down tackle in his 95 games)

As a half forward the opposition usually play their most damaging halfback on him and run off him with very little fear he will hurt them the other way (he averages around half a goal a game)

cops a lot of criticism for the defensive side of his game but fishers is no better and Dow is a much better contested and clearance player, some of fishers chasing last night was horrible.

When I watch fisher play I see a player with a nice quick sidestep a slightly above average left foot and that’s about it, I think his best and only position he can play is as a genuine midfielder but we have about 10-12 guys on our list who would be ahead of him for that position due to his lack of size, speed and especially endurance.

Personally I would rather honey and durdins extra speed and pressure in the team rather than the extra possessions that Fisher usually gets.

Don't think theres any need for B Mckay. Young will continue to improve with more and more synergy with Weiters. He's more than capable and better than most oppositions 2nd KPD.
Where we fall apart down back is offensive rebound and transition ball movement. Cowan will help with that in time but having another option down back who can generate real drive and free Doc and Saad up is the only 'need' I'd say we have down back.


Our HFF, Wings and FP options are all still mid tier - below average and have been an issue for quite some time now. Name another contender who doesn't have quality across any of those lines. I think they are close to the most important players in footy atm for any team trying to win a flag.

Bris - Bailey, McCarthey, Mccluggage, Ashcroft, Cameron
Geelong - Stengle, Close, Smith, Holmes, Duncan, Henry
Pies - Sidebottom, Daicos, Ginnivan, Elliot, Degoey, Daicos
Melbourne - Pickett, Langdon, Spargo, ANB, Hunter, Fritsch
Sydney - Papley, Gulden, Hayward, Heeney, McCinerny, Florent


Every single player on that list would walk straight into our team and improve it tenfold. Those are the lines we need to improve. KPPs, Inside Mids, HBFs we're more than above the standard.

Acres and Hollands could end up being solutions for us once they adjust to our system and Hollands maturing physically but replace JSOS, Owies, Fisher and Martin with some composed players who can actually rotate up the ground when things aren't going their way up fwd and we'd be contenders. Weakest HFF group of any team competing for finals.

Absolutely think Cottrell should be playing on our half forward line. He's definitely in our best 22 IMO. Dont think Silvagni or Fisher are.

Not sure defensive pressure is Dow's go either though but he can't be worse in terms of lack of accountability and his lack of tank wouldn't be worse than Fisher's 70% game time.

That was part of my point Dow’s defensive side isn’t great but he gets heavily criticised for it whereas fisher seems to escape that criticism despite similar flaws in his game.
I also give dow a lot of credit for his attitude last year when playing reserves he has never dropped his head or sulked and continued to work hard on his game despite getting tagged in a lot of those games, I wonder if fisher would have that same attitude and dominate reserves like Dow has.

Couldn't be any worse than what Martin or Owies produce on a constant basis...

Could rotate with Kennedy and have bursts in the midfield...

Maybe he can perform other roles, but we just pigeon hole him into being an inside mid only...

And ours was excellent last night, even with a few out. Assuming young and weitering stay fit there appears to be no need to spend capital (be it salary cap or draft picks) for minimal improvement.

On the other hand if we could pick up a gun 30 - 40 goal medium sized half forward we would be 3 or 4 wins better off than last year. Just off the top of my head a player like Elliott, Zac Bailey etc.

I think Elijah Hollands or Rochelle look to be ideal candidates or maybe Sheezel. These types are hard to shake out but someone ready to go would make a huge difference.

Personally, I think we just need some more interceptors down back to relieve the pressure on Weitering and Youngy. You add a Tom Stewart or Docherty pre ACL's and I think we'd have close to the best defence in the league. We just never get much easy ball down there. Thats why Gov is such an important cog despite his continual injury problems.

I'd have agreed to an extent, but I think Weiters is so big now and so good at his negating role on the oppositions best fwd that he's probably just better off sticking to that and us looking to bring in a specialist interceptor instead.
