Time for the club to make a stand at the end of this year. I had hoped we were on the right trajectory but unfortunately I now don't think we are.

Definitely time to make a splash and trade 1 or 2 highly paid players and try and cash in on 3 or 4 kids from this draft class and add to our list with players that really have a passion, who bring speed to our slow list and better disposal efficiency.

Just hope we can get an okay return for the highly paid players, other clubs may not see the same value in them that we have.
Sydney really lack talls, hopefully we can make a trade or 2 with them.

Trying to screw every last percentage works when it’s a one off deal. When you deal annually with the same clubs a reasonable approach is common sense.

We were the club that traded Yarran to Richmond when we knew he was addicted to meth....

We've screwed a few clubs over at the trade table but the people involved change too often for a consistent narrative about most clubs to form it seems.

Where is the guy who Collingwood had as a list manager that got the ass for trading Stephenson and treloar out .. we need him right about now .. the guy is a genius when I really think about it but took the fall

Lol. Could you imagine the hysteria around here if we traded some of our A graders for second rounders to play in grand finals for other clubs (whilst we pay them). Great chance it happens with Grundy this year too.

They were lucky to have a generational talent in Daicos handed to them on a platter, and then found a seemingly great coach in Macrae. Things we probably won’t find over the next 24 months.

haha my post was more tongue in cheek but we don’t have the balls to do that .. I assume they were more forced to do it but it has played out well for them

I am very critical of the SOS drafting and trading era, which I think is justified, im wondering how long until Austin starts coming in to some heat for having a maxed out cap in 2022 when we missed finals and a maxed cap this season when we are in our current position?

Im a big fan of Saad and Cerra but think we overpaid for both, I was keen to get Williams but not for 6 years at the price mentioned, I’m worried Austin is a bit of a pushover or we had external people putting pressure on to get these deals done.

Having no money to target senior players and little draft currency is a massive problem and a problem that Austin needs to take responsibility for and rectify.

Having a quick read of our VFL practice game thread in regards to posters thinking Carrol won’t make it and this goes for Dow and any player who the club expect to delist.

Why keep playing Dow as a mid or Carrol as a mid?

Specifically for Dow, if he is miles off being picked as a mid, why not play him somewhere else? It’s clear he won’t make it with us as a mid, what about half forward, what about forward pocket or half back?

Whilst most would unlikely eventuate to anything, sometimes the last roll of the dice does, what do we lose from trying something like this?

I remember how many posters myself included thought Jones down back was a Hail Mary, then each week he improved and became a good player.

Why is Dow even on the list if he is so far down the pecking order? Delist him and take a MSD pick or try something different and him and us a small chance of finding a new position.

Contracts, especially of a decent amount are a wonderful thing

What do you mean?

Dow is contracted for this year, we have to pay him this money regardless and right now we are paying him to play with no chance of making the seniors.

De listing him and taking a MSD pick costs us the 6 month salary of whoever we pick up. A 6 month contract is not much and if we can’t afford it, our salary cap is in a very bad state.

I find it rather deflating that a side that hasn't made finals with this group has so many players on huge deals. Ideally your list is well rounded enough that you can easily point what you need and go hard for it. It's a Carlton classic that we are so afraid to lose our stars that we throw the kitchen sink at them.

Other sides have had better players than ours take unders because they wanted to win a flag.....Did no one at Carlton believe in the club at all?

We'll need to be very active at the trade table to get any sort of breathing room going forward.

Geelong went out and recruited Jeremy Cameron whilst at the top of the ladder, the tigers went out and got Lynch, the Dees went out and got Hunter and Grundy but we are full, it’s not very good at all.

Geelong were also able to go and take on a dud contract for a top 10 pick, it’s about time we stopped making excuses and realise if others can do it, we should be able to as well.

Melbourne could only do that because Jackson left. Probably not so different to us if TDK walks. Though they were obviously contenders.
Geelong also have about 5 really good players set to retire so they have a lot more room to move then us.
Collingwood were up shit creek and somehow turned it all around when no one thought it was possible. A lot of luck with Daicos but.
Imo Brisbane look to be doing it the best.

I still look at Collingwood and Geelong’s list and wonder if they would be contenders with Voss in charge.

They had proved themselves far more than we had before they made those big plays. Hawthorn lost Franklin but improved tremendously by getting Lake and Frawley.

Badly need to round out our forward line and midfield but we'll need to trade out players on big money to do it.

No issue with Saad and Cerra, imagine how much worse we’d be without them.

SOS list management era sucked.

All of those clubs were in the premiership window at the time. A lot easier to attract good players and get players to take market rates or less when you're in that position.

Tom Lynch contract is reported at $6M over 7 years.

Cameron is 5 years at $900,000

Now our CEO has stated we have cap issues and have to stick to the draft.

If the Tigers after winning a premiership can go out and get a FA on $900,000 and the cats can go and spend $900,000 on a player after being up the top for years and we are maxed out, then we are doing it wrong.

Saad, Cerra and Hewetts contracts all seem reasonable I don’t think we struggled to bring them in, it’s Charlie, Harry, Cripps, Walsh deals that I wonder if we were too generous or is there some bad contracts in there that we don’t know about?

Martin, Mcgovern, Williams, Dow and potentially someone like Plow or Fisher would be ones that could be causing us to top out.

Nothing wrong with the players just thought we slightly over paid picks wise with each but that comment is probably secondary to my main point.

Geelong and Richmond after being at the top for years were able to go out and recruit players on $900,000 per year.

We are maxed out after a year finishing 9th and it’s not buy recruiting big names as Saad, Cerra and Heweets contracts are all reasonable.

According to all reports Martin is on stuff all this year and next.

Most on here say Govs deal was heavily front loaded

Surely Plow isn’t in much

Same goes for Dow

Williams contract is really bad

Dow, why would he be on anything significant? A bad sign if he is.

Fish, why would he be on big $$$$$

More scrutiny needs to come on to why we have such a tight cap
