I wonder if Williams best spot is back in defence.

Acres, Hollands, Cottrell and Binns the wingers.

Could possibly move Docherty back to defence as a General Defender with Saad, Boyd, Cincotta, etc. providing the run from halfback.

Possibly see Williams as that medium forward that can go into the middle throughout the game like De Goey and Greene.

I’m sure we’ll get a better idea over summer.
I love the idea of Williams as a half forward. He is classy with ball in hand, tough and has some x factor. Him, Martin, Motlop and Hollands would make a great team in the forward line if they can apply enough pressure

I’m a Dow man and have fought hard for him to get an opportunity on here…

Could he have helped shape a different outcome yesterday? Doubtful, but who knows…

Going forward, I’d rather see Hollands skills and defensive running used in the midfield, he’s overall package projects higher than Dow…

Why I’d like to keep Dow, he’d be good depth again next year, but so is Kennedy or Hewett, can’t begrudge him wanting to actually play… Good luck to him…

Dow & Fisher will want to move, get a fresh start and try to reignite their careers. Curnow Ed to retire and O’Brien, Plowman, Honey, Durdin Sam,
may be delisted.
Quite a few others need to be reevaluated, Caroll, Young ,Owies , Philp , surplus players, either not skillful or quick enough to warrant their place on the list. Austin has a very crucial and critical role to play. We’re in competent hands.

Some names that we may target, that are available that could help us

Hollands
Harmes
Lohmann
Gresham
Billings
Henry
Bailey Smith? Not happy at Dogs
Brockman

The cupboard is fairly bare. Hollands and the draft seem to be best bet

I think Harmes is a improvement on what we have if his body is good, Lohmann has recommitted, surprised Billing’s has slid so far, would love Smith.

I think there’s lots of options but I think our lack of $$$ space limits us.

Hollands and Harmes both realistic

Analysis of Pitto’s stats doesn’t look good at all this season. Not finding the ball. Not a single mark on a lead. 2 marks inside 50. Shithouse kicking efficiency.

Is a better tap ruckman than TDK but nowhere near it as soon as it hits the ground and everywhere afterwards. There’s no spot in the forward line for TDK really unless one of Cc or McKay is injured.

Huge off-season ahead for TDK I hope.

TDK is solid up forward, gets to good spots, just struggled to finish his good work, at least TDK forward gives us a presence if Harry or Charlie go up the ground, which should of have happened more last night.

We have dollars. New Salary Cap deal and work by Cook has freed things up

Agree we do have room and flexibility within salary cap demarcations, furthermore there’ll be at least 2 trades, I retired and 5 or 6 delisted.
Club must get it right, next 2/3 year window gives us realistic possibilities for our 17th.
List must be enhanced, to accomplish another Grand Final win.

Well that was a rollercoaster of a season and seems a bit of unfinished business, so lets hope we can add to our stocks in the off-season.

My two cents:

Firstly if we get this off-season right we could really put ourselves right up there for the flag next season (duh). I hope there is a bit more than what Cook seems to be intimating (1 trade and rest draft picks etc) though the general consensus seems to be this might be the quietest trade/draft period in a long long time so it's probably right.

Lets not forget the two losing preliminary finalists are now playing off in the grand final (one of them after a 70+ point hiding). I think there is a lesson to be learnt here - i.e. not to rest on our laurels. We don't have to be heroes but shrewd recruiting and trading can really elevate us. This is where Austin will earn his money.

After losing the prelim Brisbane off-season additions were Dunkley, Mckenna, Gunston, Ashcroft, Fletcher.

Collingwood added McStay, Mitchell, Hill, Markov, Frampton.

Sydney added no one other than Francis plus draft picks - stayed stagnant.

Geelong added a few youngsters but of course they lost a few as well.

I hope we don't go the Sydney play but somewhere in the middle of Collingwood-Brisbane. Of course won't have the sheer luck Brisbane had with F/S last year but still if there's value to be had we should be a bit more active.

We're a 30+ goal per season small/mid forward short of a premership.

Unfortunately these guys don't grow on trees.

I don't think a single player who kicked 30+ in 2022 is any chance of being at Carlton in 2024.

Tom Papley.. if only... :'(

If we focus on the draft like last year and go for Acres types again then I’d say we don’t have $$$

If we have $$$$ I think we’d be targeting players of higher quality.

The higher salary cap only helps if our players on big contracts don’t have clauses that increase their deals in line with cap invreases.

Earlier articles this year suggested most managers were pushing their clients to have them.

Proof will be in the pudding

When do we expect the club to announce the players that will get delisted? Always makes me a little sad as I want all of them to make it as soon as they join our club

Seems to now be done in two stages.

Suspect the most obvious ones (rookies / others that have zero interested clubs in trades or a new home) would be Monday afternoon / Tuesday morning after the exit interviews.

Round 2 would be after the trade period so we can see if there is any interest in any fringe players (more to help them get to their destination club earlier / directly rather than interest in any draft picks), before letting them go.

We’ve also signed a number of players on cheap contracts next year. Cuningham Fogarty McGovern Silvagni Cincotta O”Keefe Lemmey Martin will be on reduced or bugger all next year

A lot of our list aren’t on big deals. Carroll Hollands Binns Boyd Kemp O’Brien Cottrell aren’t on much plus we will probably lose Dow and Fisher and replace with draftees

We have room it’s just how we use it

It’s certainly a way better managed salary cap than we had circa 2013 or so, that was one of Malthouse’s complaints when he came in (though he could of sussed it out before taking the job)

Think the list changes are pretty clear at the moment

Departing, Ed, Mirkov, LOB, Honey, Plowman

Trade, Dow, Fisher, both surplus to needs it would seem

Tough list decisions, Cuners, Marchbank, S Durdin, Philp

Needs seem pretty clear.

Draft a young KPD.

A Zac Bailey type, dangerous forward that spends time in the middle. Think Zac Williams can play that role, so perhaps go to the draft or look at a Lohmann type to develop

A mid/3rd tall dynamic forward, a Jack Martin/Ash Johnson type

You reckon we pay out LOB and Mirkov?

I've been asking for a Zac Bailey type for years. Fingers crossed.

There are other factors though.
It seems like all the trade/draft experts and player managers are expecting this to be a really quiet year for player movement. We don't have a lot of trade currency. You don't want to buy a player just because they're available, and, it might be particularly hard to buy a player you want this year.
We also need to keep kids coming though to keep the list balanced. Might be much better off saving cash, and getting someone you really need in a year or 2.

My delistings/trades

Ed Curnow (ret)
Plowman
Philp
Honey
Marchbank
Dow (Trade)
Fisher (Trade)

Unless we can get a genuine KPD I’d keep S.Durdin. We need a KPD to back up Weitering. If he can stay fit and he’s only 27

williams might get tried again through the midfield, just because he didn't flourish there before (different system) doesn't mean he can't

Mid/forward ? I reckon he could add a different dynamic….wouldn’t mind trying Martin in that role as well. He hits bodies hard when he’s on

We definitely need a point of difference through the middle.

I’m tipping Walsh to be our best midfielder by this time next year

IMO Walsh is our best midfielder now. Next year Cerra will be right up there with him

Disagree. You are turning a supplementary player that is used in case of injury into a messiah

No one is saying Dow is a star or a messiah, including GBatman. Most posters who support Dow seem to be saying that he’s vastly improved this year and we should try and retain him because he offers a point of difference from Kennedy, Hewitt and Crippa.

And Dow is still only 23, so there’s a lot more improvement with the attitude he’s shown this year. He has flaws, but he does read clearance play very well and can burst away from stoppages. His disposal and decision making has improved also.

And not sure why Philp would be ahead of Dow on the pecking order. They’re both young but Dow has a lot more runs on the board. Philp is unfortunately injury prone.

But think whatever the club does this off season us supporters should feel confident about where we’re headed.
