Completely deflating. Apart from beating Geelong (we got them at the right time and wouldn’t go close to them now), we’ve failed every test against a top 8 contender - St Kilda, Adelaide and Brisbane. Our disposal is woeful when we’re put under the slightest pressure. Really concerning and disappointing.
And we barely passed the north and GWS tests. We've been terrible all year

IMHO they played the game the way we want to play it but they just did it better.
Very well drilled and organised team. Hats off to them.

I only regret our boys made so many poor mistakes. Could have been one for the ages if we didn't screw ourselves up so much.
Could have been one for the ages, but wasn't because we played like complete trash the whole game.

If only!

We made 75 turnovers to Brisbane’s 79. Ours were very very costly. We lack dare at key periods of the game and they go into their shells. If that’s due to a lack of confidence after making an error or not I’m not sure.

Statistics don’t always tell the full story I’ll give you that.
One telling statistic I learnt tonight is that the Lions are averaging 75 points from turnovers compared to the league average of 49 points. That’s 26 points more than the average which means they make you pay on the scoreboard if you turn it over.

Also they just so happened to beat us tonight by 26 points…fiik what that means.

Lots of positives to take out of tonight’s game - only lost to a top four side by four goals - so that’s really only a goal a quarter we have to find - we found new avenues to goals as our talls were held, with Motlop and Durdin contributing 2 goals each.

Just a little more consistency should see us winning these close contests - we’re still a work in progress.

I don’t mind the glass half full approach but I think it shows not only are we a work in progress we are a long long way off.

I personally don’t think we will make the 8. I mean from what we have shown this year are we any better than Essendon or Gold Coast?

What this shows is that stats are idioitic.

We didn't lack dare, we lacked accuracy, poise, skill.

Walsh 221 mts gained, something like 20% efficiency to my eye. Worst game the kid has ever had. I love him, but that was tripe.

BamBam almost surpased them all in a qtr.

Where are your stats for hitting targets? Where are your stats for clangers? We would have been pulverised in the first and easily won the latter.

Stats that count?

Goals for/Goals against. Occasionally behinds for/against.

Stats are rubbish
Skills skills skills
That’s all that matters .. hit targets be fluid
We can’t kick we melt under pressure we miss 20 metre passes.
Game plan is shit but these players aren’t up to it either

We don’t have a Daicos or a Pendlebury or a bont or anything like it … it’s called football… who are our mids that can tear a team apart with their Footskills ?? Useless

We gave up multiple goals due to basic skill errors & mistakes.

Forward setup & work rate is terrible. Small forwards are next to useless, constantly sagging back towards goal to be out the back of contests leaving nobody leading at the ball carrier for a hit up outside 50m. I have no doubt this is part of the reason for the slow ball movement and rubbish delivery into the forward line, there is constantly nobody to kick it to.

4th qtr, we change the style, move backwards by hand & foot and bring the half backs into the game, we spread, open the ground up and we looked a completely different and better team.

H is woefully out of form/ confused. His starting position is too high leaving nowhere for him to lead into. He has rightly been told to draw his man away from Charlie, but he doesn’t know how then to capitalise on his own strengths and to still be a viable option.

JSOS - it was a perfect night for him - he should have destroyed Starcevic et al and dominated as the 3rd forward. He was ordinary after a strong first qtr. Worth rolling Kennedy through this position for a few weeks at JSOS’ expense.

At the ground it was clear that Young was very poor and deserved to be subbed.

Several players playing for themselves & perhaps survival in the team, ignoring first option for personal glory.

Terrible night for several of our key leaders, we were never in it after 1/4 time.

Despite this we only lost by 4 goals. Most of this can be fixed.

Honestly I wouldn't be upset if we dropped him. Complete c grader at the moment. Kennedy played with more intensity in a quarter than Cripps did in 4.

Offers nothing offensively and defensively. Figjam of a captain and always goes to water before we lose a coach.
On the money

BTW, I don't think I "got off lightly". The post quoting me was misguided, I calmly pointed that out, and then I got a positive response.

Maybe everyone should try interacting in that way :p
Twas tongue in cheek my friend.

And that comment from that post quoting you was clearly aimed at you (along with anyone else who followed suit)

I'm sick of us being a work in progress. We should be close to the finished product.

There's something seriously wrong mentally with this group.

We handball too much when we don’t need to, then don’t handball enough when we need to handball.

We want to retain possession with a 20-25m kick, but cannot sustain efficient possession. So it turns into a long ball game instead of what we want it to be I think. So then our transition sucks.

We take way too long to clear the ball from stoppage, it’s like we want to play a game of chess to get it out of there sometimes.

Please do not play Ed up forward again. Please, despite his goal, not play Doc up forward again. We are crying out for some damn ****ing half forwards, PLEASE!
Please give Kennedy his spot in the 22 again.
Cerra has stepped up. Worst game I’ve seen from Saad and Walsh in a LONG long time.

Credit to Lions though, professional second half from them and Dunkley was a great pick up for them. Zac Bailey also is such an effective player with the touches he gets.

Watch the peak three peat hawks when they went into possession mode. The off the ball movement was awesome. Clear an area out for someone to lead into. Chip mark. Then teams played man, they go fast and the gun forwards found space 1v1. I understand the point of possession but you're right. It requires the next kick in the chip chain being presented. Our smalls rarely work up the ground to help. Our wingers are glued to the sidelines and don't help and the big bodied mids all want to take contested marks.
THIS! Add to that the fact that we seemingly never look for the shorter option in the middle third of the ground

Honey has played less than 10 games. Jack has played over 100. How much longer can he keep being defended?
It was you who brought up the Honey comparison. I just added some facts. If your takeaway from tonight is that JSOS is more deserving of criticism than Honey then I don't know what to tell you. Probably best we agree to disagree and move on.

Some stats:
Carlton +57 possessions (395-338)
Carlton +25 contested (155-130)
Carlton +50 uncontested (253-203)
Carlton +4 centre clearances (14-10)
Tied Inside 50s (47-47)

Cripps 159 metres gained.
Hewett 192 metres gained.
Walsh 221 metres gained.
Kennedy 306 metres gained in 1 quarter.

What this shows is that the game plan is slow, chippy, stodgy. We aren’t good enough with ball in hand and by foot to play that control style. We lack any dare. We lack any speed both by foot and speed of ball movement. Unleash the shackles and give this team a chance or it’s going to be a death by 1000 cuts. Absolute no man’s land.
You see I would argue that our game plan is tailored to our list - it has to be “slow, chippy and stodgy” because, in your own words, “we aren’t good enough with ball in hand and foot” to play any other style.

As another poster just stated, our mids have to cream it, especially at centre clearances, for us to “get it in quick” so our Coleman boys can mark it.

We don’t have quick buzzy players who can regularly hit packs at speed and come away with the footy. We don’t have enough players who can play with “dare” due to foot skill limitations, e.g., more corridor use. Even our No 1 draft pick was spotting up Lions all night!

To start with we need to get Ed, Honey and maybe even JSOS out of the team and replace with skill and or run like Kennedy (3rd tall), Binns Boyd and Cotts. Forget about Cuners and Martin, bodies too far gone to help anymore.
