AFL Trades 2023: Why free agency compensation may force West Coast Eagles to trade out pick No.1

Forget the questions about the go-home factor for Harley Reid.

Forget the hype around Daniel Curtin.

The real reason West Coast may be forced to trade pick No.1 is this year’s free agency compensation.

The Eagles have been the talk of the trade period as clubs, or more specifically North Melbourne, chase a way to pry the top selection out of their hands.

West Coast are adamant it’s going to take a Godfather offer to get them to trade it and there were reports they wanted picks 2 and 3 from the Kangaroos, although they won’t publicly put a price on it.

But the real reason they may look to trade it is because their next pick in this year’s draft could come closer to 30 rather than 19 - where it started before the free agency period opened last week.

Normally when a team finishes last they get two picks inside the top 20 but the AFL has given out some incredible concessions to clubs for losing players in the past 10 days.

North Melbourne got pick 3 for losing free agent Ben McKay to Essendon, while Adelaide got pick 20 after Tom Doedee went to Brisbane and finally, Josh Gresham’s move to the Bombers has landed St Kilda pick 21.

Add in the end-of-first-round compensation pick the Kangaroos got from the AFL last month as part of a concessions package and West Coast’s second pick has gone from 19 to 23 already.

And it is more than likely to slide even further with Gold Coast arming themselves with a plethora of picks from the second round onwards to match expected first-round bids on their top academy prospects in Jed Walter, Ethan Read and Jake Rogers.

This means the Eagles’ second-round pick could slide all the way to 26.

If Fremantle get picks 19 and 21 in trades for Lachie Schultz and Liam Henry, they could have two picks before the Eagles get their second - despite winning seven more games.

For West Coast, this is problematic as they continue the biggest rebuild in their club’s history.

Draft experts believe the talent slips heavily after the first 10 picks and even more so after the first round.

It’s not an exact science. You only have to look at Fremantle snaring Lachie Neale with pick 58 before he goes on to win two Brownlow Medals to know you can find a gem anywhere in the draft.

But every year the data clubs and recruiters are getting on prospects is getting better and better. From private school footy to club land and the Under-18 Championships - AFL clubs have a better idea than ever of what is out there.

This is why there is little doubt that Reid is going to make an AFL team even better, but West Coast may be better off trying to find a way to get two picks inside 10 to add to their squad.

If North Melbourne can somehow get their hands on Geelong’s pick 8, then a trade that involves that and No.3 as well as a promise to not draft Curtin might be the best result for West Coast.

It would give them three picks inside 30, something they seriously need as they look to load up on talent in this year’s draft.

Some fans may be upset on missing out on Reid, but it could be risk worth taking because of free agency.
Tree Dick certainly laying the groundwork for something there

If we end up with 2, 3, 8, and 17 on draft night courtesy of some live trading, then that looks to be better than anything involving Harley Reid.
Picks 15,17 and 18 are going to be pretty valuable in the live trading market on draft night - another reason why we shouldn't be burning them in any deals moving up one spot.

1.5m a season on a genuine gumby who occasionally stands in the right place and marks it thanks more to the genetics of his gigantic-handed father than any technical skill, and Jade Gresham who has previously missed an entire season due to an Achilles which has also robbed him of any explosiveness he might have had before

Probably another $300-400K on a 35 year old ruckman who is perpetually horny, can't ruck alongside anyone else over 185cm, and will probably stifle the development of two younger ruckmen like Bryan and Draper (if the latter's hip/groin doesn't disintegrate in the next few years)

And they also want to get in the lesser Duursma to assumedly average 11 touches on a wing and do his best impression of Cale Morton whenever there's another human adult male within 15 metres of him

Brad Scott forever baby

If someone put an * jumper on this, I’d be deceased.

Why? Because Brady didn’t spill all our deepest darkest secrets 5 days out from deadline day?

No grouchy, because he said we were happy with the options we have, adding Pink, Nyuon (matter of time way he was talking about it) and made mention of players already on the list we see can help in that area.

Looks like the author has been trawling though the NM Bigfooty site - the stuff he has written has been spoken about for days on here.

WC thought they were in the box seat but now realise just how bad their predicament is - things work a lot slower out there in the West!

We just need to sit tight and let them come to us (as Brady has today said he will do.)

2 picks inside 30 for WC - for a list that is already going backwards - that is a disaster in list management terms.

They need at least 3 picks inside 20.

Their list is a wasteland.

They need what we have in terms of picks.

And they’re no chance of getting it.

Brady said we have 36 contracted players. 44 list spots available. If nothing changes, we'll take 5 picks - 2, 3, 15, 17 & 18 to the draft. Leaves 3 spots. 1 goes to Toby Pink (assume he is not yet in the 36?). So, 2 spots left.

In discussions with Nyuon with Bonar, Turner & Mahoney waiting.

Assuming nothing out of left field who are the 2 out of Nyuon, Bonar, Turner and Mahoney?

Edit - also said we're still look at trading up. In which case suggest we'd take 4 early and maybe 1 late or give one more of the above another year.

Thanks Brady, that's obviously why you didn't include pick 2 and 3 in the offer to your former employer. I'd be happy to bundle up those teen picks for another top 10, but I do feel there'll be some tall timber available at those picks.
And why us holding to #2 is more important and #3 or both as the known quantity is Reid will go #1 and we are basically in the same position as last year with #2 & #3, Brady and lads know who they are taking at #2 imo.

Can rule out Nick Haynes and pick 7. His manager has confirmed he's at Giants next year

To be fair, it's not an instant upgrade as it might take Chom a while to get to Ben McKay's level of understanding of modern defensive structures and how to play the role. But hopefully by the end of January...
No chance Chom can be converted into a KPD...who takes the No.2 defender each week in the forward line....and where the hell is Watto going to sniff his loose ball goals when Chom Chom crashes packs?
Rather they convert CCJ as a KPD/Ruck...or giving him a pair of Cox's glasses as he gets is hands on the ball in so many marking contests but can't clunk them!!
