Play Nice 2024 AFL and State League Attendance

Expecting a big crowd for Freo v Pies - not a lot of tickets on sale now - would be expecting close to 50k. The only thing stopping it would be it being a weeknight game, in Perth they are a nightmare to get to. I reckon some Freo members may not bother going.

Current average attendance on the Gold Coast is tracking well compared to previous seasons.

IMG_2504.jpeg

The next two games against Essendon and Collingwood will hopefully be able to crack 20,000 each.

The remaining games are against Port, Brisbane and Melbourne which would hopefully draw 15,000 each if the Gold Coast remain in the 8.

That could see the Gold Coast achieve their highest average attendance since year 1 (excluding home games not played in Gold Coast).

This is surely a sign that the AFL should move all Suns games back to the Gold Coast, and get Melbourne clubs to send their games to Darwin and Cairns instead.

Essendon game is Saturday night, not the best slot as people on the coast go out. Also, not being school holidays means unlike previous games against Tigers / Pies which were in holiday slots, it won’t get the travelling hordes if Victorian families pumping up the crowd. These two factors mean a 21/22,000 crowd becomes 15-17,000 pretty quickly. Its a pity it’s not a month later as the Bombers would bring huge numbers to this game and ensure it was sold out.

Yeah well the Tasmania games aren't going too well.
I'd argue Hawthorn has done well with Tasmanian games. If they hadn't, the deal wouldn't have lasted this long.

At the end of the day selling games to far off hard to get to places alienates their fans.
Take it up with the clubs involved, not me. I didn't force Hawthorn or North to sell home games to other cities.

If North doesn’t go to Darwin, use the extra games created by Tassie’s entry for Darwin. (we currently have nine neutral games, we will have 19 when Tas come in if we go to 24 games). You could have every club playing at least once in Darin over a five year period. Mix it up and keep fans of all clubs engaged. Same for Canberra.

Fully agree, we have 1 home game on the Gold Coast over an 8 week period right in the middle of the season. It just kills all the momentum of building a culture of attending matches here that we desperately need.

There needs to be 11 games on the coast to keep that attendance culture going throughout the year.

Giants have the same issue, they kill off any attending habits at the start of the season by choice, by not playing in Sydney for months.

Fits with my idea of having Northern Round in addition to Gather Round, featuring at least one game in each of Darwin, Alice Springs, Cairns, Townsville and Mackay.

The one game at Blacktown in 2012 had the same crowds as last weekend (7k). Surely between there, ACCOR (could play Pies or Blues and get 20k - 25k) and the SCG, they can play all of their games in Sydney.

I agree, I think playing across a few locations (in Sydney) would also help them to attract new fans. Henson park I like too, that gets a big turnout for aflw games.

That one game in Blacktown was literally their second home game and novelty value alone of playing the second game made it possible.

If we're talking second venues, surely a slightly upgraded Henson Park is the answer, despite the inner west being Swans territory.

Agree.

As another poster mentioned, we have a similar situation at the Giants.

We have 1 game at Engie stadium in 3 months at the start of the season. It makes it near impossible to build that attendance culture and kills off any momentum that could build throughout the season.

When we're back at Engie with regularity in the second half of the season, we have 5 home games left and the season is over. 5 regular home games may be enough to gain a little momentum after the extended hiatus but it's too short of a timeframe before the season is over, IMO.

Currently the Giants have a contract till at least 2032 to play 3 AFL games in Canberra (with an option of a 4th game if parties agree) and a pre-season game.

Probably best just to avoid Accor/Stadium Australia.

Whilst the three games GWS has hosted at venue has achieved GWS three highest home and away crowds. However they were against local team Swans who would have the greatest pulling power for attendance.

Besides from the inaugural game, the others aren’t much bigger of an attendance than the capacity of Sydney Showground.

That means having 3/4 of the stadium empty, which is not a good experience.

That is another thing they need to fix. All western suburbs should be in the Giants zone. Bankstown is zoned to Swans. Rediculous.

Beatable H&A crowd records to keep an eye on this week:

Largest Fremantle home crowd vs Collingwood: 41,624 from 2010. Should be 46-51k on Friday.

Largest Carlton vs Gold Coast crowd: 31,765 from 2019. Should be 34-37k on Saturday.

Largest Geelong vs GWS crowd: 30,087 from 2017. Should be 28-32k on Saturday. So not a lock, but it is beatable if Cats members show despite facing a 4 game losing streak.

Tickets still selling at a slow but steady rate in the AFL Members for Ess/Rich. Now just over half of the back section of level 4 is all that remains.

Shows how strong the brand of Dreamtime at the G is as on paper this match presents as a one sided stroll. Or perhaps there's a lot of people who like the idea of Richmond getting thrashed.

Nice try, the Tigers will not be a stroll in the park for us bc we all know...Bombers are not a side that flog teams and jury is still out on us. This should keep Richmond fans and neutrals engaged. Anything can happen!
