How many of these academy kids are only guns because if the academy program, they get additional high class development from a young age and it’s little wonder they start to jump ahead of the kids who haven’t been in these programs.. Time will tell if that evens out over time or if they kick onto another level once in a professional environment.

Time will tell? How much time do you need? How long has the academy system been in place now?
They have not jumped ahead, there is no team that has jumped ahead and won premiership/s because of it, it was designed to give the northern teams a better access to local talent, to even the playing field with traditional football states and really it has delivered very little advantage to academy teams.
The very first time a team has actually received some benefit (The Suns) this year the sky is falling brigade are storming the headquarters.

Another way to look at it is how many are only highly rated BECAUSE they are in academies? They get noticed way more and way earlier due to being in the academies.

Does that mean they will become better AFL-level players than the kids who don't get the publicity?

Mills & Heeney are the 2 that probably have the most evidence, both came into the game with big reputations and people fearing that these Sydney free hits would be too big an adavantage..Both have turned into good players but doubt either has reached the reputation they came iinto the AFL with, although they certainly are not on their own here.

A Crows poster said it was impossible for you guys to land Draper and Welsh. Simply pointing out that it is possible.

Crows fans may just be going through some grief themselves in a couple of years when Draper is cutting it up in another clubs colours!;)
Crows fans hope to be winning a flag by 2027.
Curtin helps achieve that quicker than Draper will.

I suspect if the crows wanted the WCE pick that badly, they would have traded for it on draft night after securing the Curtin pick from GWS. And unless Curtin falls in a heap as a player, he won't be worth less next year (ie curtin + 6 for 2).

I get the feeling they are absolutely thrilled to land Curtin and god willing, we can hold onto him long term

Yeah. West Coast offered pick 2 (in this scenario) for Curtin, why all of a sudden are we now handing over pick 6 as well? Hahah

I still can't believe there were no takers for West Coast's first pick.

You could either get one of Finn O'Sullivan, Jagga Smith, Sid Draper or Josh Smillie (and I'm sure others will emerge), or trade back for 3 first rounders like GC did.

We didn't take it because we were after a tall and particularly O'Sullivan. Pick 1 was of no use to us when the best 4 or so kids are mids.

Fair enough. All clubs from Melbourne's pick to Essendons will have their reasons for not taking the deal, I'm just surprised no one did.

I reckon there would have been a strong element of impatience involved too, that is they all wanted something new now

I can't speak for other clubs but we desperately needed a tall - either this draft or next and O'Sullivan was the one we were after.

I think it can’t have been a straight swap that was on offer otherwise every one of those teams are mad

Likely you were also asking for something else in return and that’s why they all said no

my top 30 from the division 1 sides (u16's 2024 draft)

VM - Josh Smillie, Jagga Smith, Levi Ashcroft, Lucas McInerney, Luke Wilson, Ty Kitchell, Zak Johnson, Isaac Kako (8)
VC - Finn O'Sullivan, Sam Lalor, Xavier Lindsay, Xavier Ivisic, Tobie Travaglia (5)
WA - Otis Harvey, Deian Roberts, Chayse Martinson, Hugh Boxshall, Malakai Champion, Harry Jones (6)
SA - Lucas Camporeale, Phoenix Hargrave, Benny Barrett, Sid Draper, Tyler Welsh, Jacob Newton, Ned Atkinson, Louie Montgomery (8)

underager - Dyson Sharp(SA)
overagers - Will McCabe(SA), Xavier Walsh(WA)
Dave your VM group - Josh Smillie, Jagga Smith, Levi Ashcroft, Lucas McInerney, Luke Wilson, Ty Kitchell, Zak Johnson, Isaac Kako (8).
A fair bit has changed in this age group since 2022. The VM hub illustrates this.
At the time of the u16 VM in 2022 I felt there was next to no attempt at trying to forecast who had the potential to come on against the kids who were doing it now. At least 8 kids who we will never see again

Correct and given the no of over 30s talls we have and the lack of decent talls in this pool besides faull i can see why we said no. But the wce offer was a really compelling one its hard to say no to.
