Season is completely over now.

Club is in a brilliant spot for 2024. Anything which isn't a top 4 finish is a failure.

Honestly where the list is at we are in such a strong position for 2 premierships over the next 4 years.

Long time before the season starts, guess I'll focus on my Bretonnians until the season starts
Hope we win one in the next couple of years, because Gold Coast should be an absolute juggernaut from 2026.

With our list for 2024 now complete, I thought I would do as I did last year and place every player into categories same as last year...

(All of the below are under the guise of everyone being fit.)

Could Murder Horse's Cat and They'd Still Be In the Team
Chad Warner, Isaac Heeney, James Rowbottom, Tom Papley, Callum Mills, Errol Gulden, Nick Blakey, Dane Rampe, Luke Parker, Tom McCartin, Jake Lloyd, Brodie Grundy

Would Have to Murder Horse's Cat to Not Be In the Team
Hayden McLean, Logan McDonald, Harry Cunningham, Will Hayward, Ollie Florent, Braeden Campbell, Justin McInerney, Taylor Adams

Could Get Acquitted of Murdering Horse's Cat Depending On Strength of the Prosecution's Case
Aaron Francis, Sam Wicks, Jacob Konstanty, Peter Ladhams, Sam Reid, Angus Sheldrick, Matt Roberts, Joel Amartey, Corey Warner, Robbie Fox, Lewis Melican, Jack Buller, James Jordon, Joel Hamling, Caiden Cleary

Would Have to Revive Horse's Murdered Cat to Be In the Team
Cooper Vickery, Will Edwards, Jaiden Magor, Caleb Mitchell, Lachie McAndrew, Harry Arnold, Will Green, Patrick Snell, Indhi Kirk

Just for fun I've run up what I think would be Rd1 Seniors and VFL teams with everyone except Mills fit. Plenty that's arguable. Sheldrick in for Campbell for one. The main reason was to see what the VFL team might look like.
It is going to be very tall, which is blindingly obvious. The lack of sharp smalls maybe less obvious. Perhaps that's where the VFL listed or academy players come in.
I wouldn't bother arguing with who goes where, that's not really the point.

Seniors
Cunningham Melican Rampe
Florent McCartin Blakey Lloyd
Gulden Parker McInerney ChWarner
Hayward McDonald Papley
Wicks Amartey McLean Heeney
Grundy Adams Sheldrick Rowbottom
Sub Campbell

VFL
Kirk Hamling Arnold
Edwards Francis Snell Vickery
Mitchell Fox CoWarner Campbell
Magor Ladhams Reid VFL
Konstanty Buller Green
McAndrew Roberts Cleary Jordon
VFL

Not much point in shuffling talls from defence to forward or vv. Already full. I just hope our VFL listed players are not talls!

Great lists haha.

FWIW, I would move Adams, Florent & McDonald into the top group.

Fair call on Adams. As for Florent & McDonald, only reason I don't have them in the top group is because I think they're prone to form drop-offs that they might not be able to afford if there's competition for spots.

Agreed but the conversation isn't about captaincy. Swannie0307 was addressing if Errol should be in the leadership group and replace Howard. I'd say no.

We also have Adams & Grundy now in the middle who are far more experienced, the group may elect one of them instead.
Would not surprise me at all to see Adams in there. Pies VC and plenty of experience

Horse is a cat kinda guy?

I’d pictured him more as the tropical fish tank type.

But regardless - I reckon your list is pretty close to the mark.

My tip for the year - Caleb Mitchell to move out of the bottom tier, whilst Harry battles to remain in Tier 2.

Fair point but Florent finished 5th in the B&F (and was killing it until prbly picking up a mid-season niggling injury?), and if Horse wants to mitigate the Logan flight risk, he simply has to play him whenever he’s fit… having said that I expect Logan to have a breakout year 👍

Florent finished 6th in the B&F but there was just 37 votes between him and 9th, everyone below him missing multiple games while Florent played every game, while Logan shouldn't get games just because we're scared of losing him.

In fairness, the category I put them in is basically the category where something would have to go badly south with them for them to not be selected in the team. In all likelihood both feature every week, but I think both still have to really earn that.

Something I'm optimistic about for the coming season is developing our tall defenders.

We all of a sudden have an unusual wealth of players that can play the three tall back roles:

Rampe, McCartin, Melican, Hamling, Fox, Arnold, Francis, Edwards and now Snell. (Plus Blakey is tall but not really playing one of those key defender roles; plus we have Reid but I consider him more as a forward.)

As has already been observed, it is inevitable that some of these players are going to get the chop (or retire) in the not too distant future. And thus it is my hope that over the coming 12 months we can have a bit of a KPD academy going on in-house. The talls can all learn from and teach each other and simultaneously be driven by the need to compete and grow to prolong their careers (whether at the Swans or elsewhere). The vision is a kind of hothousing of the defenders. Am I being too pollyanna-ish? Will they just be miserable and stabbing each other in the back? I think we're better than that. My hopes are high that this could create a great environment and accelerate their growth.

Your thoughts?

TBH I doubt the numbers per se will influence their development (except perhaps Edwards and Snell). I don't know if there is a mentor amongst them other than Rampe.
The competition for a senior spot will hopefully drive hard work and "extras".
As the season draws to a close a couple will realise they are unlikely to be offered another contract and their motivation may drop off.
Not much point in bringing the knives out. It rarely works.

Hamling is a flag-winning veteran - he should be able to mentor the younger players along with Rampe.

The more players you have competing, the more competition. When lots of people are pulling in the same direction there is a synergy and that can catalyse fast growth. A possibly regrettable comparison is when there is a war, there is also often a lot of innovation and things happen much more quickly.

Kirk in.
Mills Out. Adams in.

I have only just discovered how much better this chart is when it fills the whole screen!!

Also, I learned that Tom McCartin doesn't have the latest birthday in the calendar at the club!

No shade on Hamling but winning a flag etc does not automatically make someone a good coach or mentor. Think Brian Lake. He may be, and that would be great, but maybe hope rather than expect.
I would love to see the club bring in a part-time defensive technical coach to work with all of them. Sadly, I have no idea who that might be.
Remember when we brought in Plugger to work with Darcy Cameron?
I remember seeing a short video piece by Dermott Brereton on how to lead to get body position over your defender. Brilliant.

Feels like the most balance our list has had probably since 2014, and maybe back to 2006.

Question mark about whether one of the key forwards, hopefully Logan, can really break out.

And I am interested to see how they use Mills when he comes back. I think he would really sure up our defence if he went back to half back.

Yep. Looks much better at full screen.

Just wondering if anyone knows and maybe it has already been explained . By my count 10 players went off the list and 8 back on.. Not including Sam Reid.
Is this right and does that mean maybe additional players mid season draft?
We had 2 players on the long term Injury list. This allowed us to take Buller and Arnold in the midseason draft.
