The flag was just won with a team that doesn't exactly have a lot of great players

They have a few players who should be considered great players, but aren't. Which is odd given it is Collingwood.

Maynard and Quaynor pretty much win or (at worst) halve every 1 on 1 contest they are in across half back.

IMO absolutely yes. We have a heap of the components BUT a lot has to go right for anyone to win a flag. The top 6 will be very competitive this season and a top 4 finish is very important. Can and will are not the same thing.
I don't feel that any side stands out this year as the one to beat. I reckon we are as much chance as 6 others.
Collingwood, Brisbane, GWS, Melbourne, Port and Carlton.

Yep, no clear favourite yet.
I have my doubts about Port and the Dees but agree on the rest. Adelaide maybe. Dogs maybe but I suspect they will self-sabotage.
Easier to pick the bottom 4.

Someone will probably come out from the pack. It seems to happen every year.
What gives me great confidence this year is the fact that when we suffer injuries, which we and every other club will, we have the depth to cover them. Grundy going down would be the only thing that would concern me.

I think it will take a year or two before their 4 new draftees have an effect. I do think they will contend for the 8 but feel they will fall just short.
Promising signs for the GCS. Forever a feeding ground for Big Vic sides. They are now like us. Far away from the Vic, SA and WA states that produce the vast majority of players for every draft. Now like us they are starting to see the fruits of their academy produce AFL standard players.
Collingwood and other big Vic sides want to see this preferred access to locally produced players stopped. That is a real sign that GCS are doing something right.

In 2023, the two Sydney teams finished just where AFL House would like us both in perpetuity - 7th and 8th, and exiting before the GF.

Join your own dots below:

Geelong finished 12th, and now they've got Connor O'Sullivan.

The Giants made a SF, and got within a point of the GF in 2023.

GWS Coaching Staff 2023-24:
Adam Kingsley. Senior Coach.
Brett Montgomery. Assistant Coach - Backline.
Ben Hart. Assistant Coach - Midfield.
Craig Jennings. Assistant Coach - Offence.
Jeremy Laidler. Assistant Coach - Forwards.
Shane Mumford. Assistant Coach - Rucks.
Wayne Cripps. VFL Coach and AFL Development Coach.

Sorry not understanding the connection

My biggest fear with our list is we have a lot of good players but not enough great players.

We are relying on blokes like McDonald, Amartey, McLean to all step up but and have consistency across the season.

Similarly in defence our "key defensive stock" isn't all that crash hot.

We could very well be the equivalent of the 2015 North Melbourne. We'll win some games, we'll even get on a winning streak until we'll face a real contender then look second paced
Fair call, time will tell.

Midfield and fitness needs to heavily improve this year, which I think it will because we've had more of an opportunity to mentally and physically reset unlike last year with a later preseason and off the back of a disappointing GF.

We were a bottom 4 side for contested possessions and clearances, our midfield was not good enough. What I am most excited about however is the offseason recruits, it gives me that extra layer of confidence. Adams and Grundy especially should heavily bolster those issues including another season into the young crop of mids. We know we have talent, but we were massively lacking experience and depth.

If we finish games off well and fix up the contested game we'll improve. Top 4 is achievable, but for our squad the highest and most important priority is that we need a consistent season which we were unable to do in 2022, hence the premature finish. We can't afford to go on another momentum fueled winning streak, to then get found out again. The harder fixture will give us a real good test. Squad should be more rejuvenated and sharper compared from last year as well, optimistic for this season.

I think a big thing is that we have a crew that can sustain a decent run in the inside of midfield in a range of roles.
Parker, Adams, Mills (when he returns) and Rowbottom all able to do heavy lifting.
Warner, Gulden, Sheldrick and Roberts able to fill in as necessary. Maybe even Jordon too.
Pinch hitters like Papley and Heeney for a change-up.
The outside wasn't our issue and you would think will be darned good if they get enough ball.
If they get the feed to the forwards right the Triad (thanks caesar88) might just dine out.

In #911, I was wondering in an oblique sort of way, whether we are a club to make the tough calls, or are we just happy to drift along in a safe comfort zone.

GWS are closer to a flag than us. Geelong might be too.
In my humble opinion, I believe that you must be smoking a little something other than tobacco to believe that Geelong could (remotely) be closer to a flag than us.
