Pick 53 - Geelong - Clancy Dennis
  • Pick 54. Geelong :geelong: - Clancy Dennis - 195cm - KPD - Claremont.

Dennis is an agile tall defender that is very good in one on one situations where he generally win the contest, and then he is able t use his leg speed to move the bal out of the defensive zone. One of his better game features is his ability to read the ball well in flight and then successfully spoils the contest or intercept with a mark.

Bit of an old fashioned defender that hates getting beaten and therefore generally stay committed to the task of totally negating his opponent.

He has a couple of other aspects to his game that I like.

    • Leadership
    • Consistency

While he is by no means an out and out star, what he is, however, is a very good role player and these are the sorts of players that Geelong love to draft a, whereby they then blend together, into a well drilled collective, as each role player does his job and then complementary team football, comes up a winner

Pick 57 - Gold Coast - Rhys Unwin
  • Pick 57. Gold Coast :goldcoast: - Rhys Unwin - 179 cm - Forward- Greater Western Victoria.

A damaging quick agile and creative player, that thinks his way through traffic and get separation from a contest.
Predominantly a tricky left footed forward, but can also take a turn in the midfield rotations.

Impressed at the combine with a 2.88 20 metre sprint and impressive results in the agility test, both sets of combine results don't surprise as all the do is back up the game day tape.

He was one of GWV better players across the CTL season.

    He is:

    Smart
    Quick
    Agile

Lot to like about this kids ability.

Pick 58 - West Coast - Malakai Champion (Matched Bid)
  • Pick 58. West Coast :westcoast: - Malakai Champion- Subiaco.

    download-8.jpg

I have matched the bid on him, with some reservations however here is the profile.

West Coast have access to Malakai through their NGA Program.

There is absolutely no doubt that Malakai has real X factor and has some special tricks, he just need to get some consistency to his game.
He is a player that drifts both in and out of games and quarters.
My second reservation with him is that he is just so very tiny, and I worry about him being able to match it with the much bigger bodies that he will face at the next level.
He has already been troubled by injury, sustained at a more physical grade of football.
He urgently needs to build up both his strength and his endurance, as he doesn't have either at the moment, to be able to compete at the AFL level.

He is speedy and smart around goals and he needs to be closely watched by his opponent, because if he is given a mili second to pounce, then he can hurt you.......... he needs to do it more often and if he can do this, he will be very entertaining to watch.

    Pick 60 - Carlton - Jaxon Artemis
  • Pick 60 - Carlton - Jaxom Artemis - 181cm winger/half back

If this kid was a little more consistent with his output, then he has enough AFL traits to go higher in the draft. He will show glimpses of ability and then go missing for stretches of a game. Carlton have stated they want speed in this draft and Artemis plays with speed and flair. I don't mind his ability with the ball in hand and I would start him as a winger/rebounding defender. He does take the game on with his kicking and I like his ability to redirect the ball back into the corridor.

    Pick 61 - Essendon - Jacob Newton
  • Pick 61 - Essendon - Jacob Newton
    179cm - Small Forward/Midfielder

A clean and damaging player who is a terrific kick on his left boot and a great finisher. Essendon usually fall away with their entries inside 50 and Newton would be one of the best players in the draft kicking inside 50.

Newton is a nice solid size and shouldn’t take long to play senior football, Newton is a powerful little player but not having that outright speed and natural crumbing game as a forward sees him as a later prospect but his best traits I feel still make him a damaging player.

Plenty of good talent still on the board, if Essendon didn’t already have a lot of small midfield types I would have taken Hargrave here.

    Pick 62 - Brisbane - Harry Charlson
  • Pick 62 - Brisbane
    Harry Charleson
    GWV Rebels / Vic Country

Understandably getting a bit light on at this point of the draft. I'm not the biggest Charleson fan but he has plenty of transferable traits. He's got that coveted speed/endurance combo, he's a capable interceptor and solid user by foot. While he's generally played across half back, those qualities should allow him to settle into a variety of different roles if he gets a chance at the next level.

Other players considered: Joel Cochran, Adrian Cole

Not considered: Key forward. It would've been more of a consideration had I been picking with an early selection, but with Logan Morris, Brandon Ryan, Luke Lloyd and Henry Smith (ruck/forward), I just don't see the value in adding another project in the 60s.

    Pick 63 - Fremantle - Bailey McKenzie
  • Pick 63 Fremantle - Bailey McKenzie (192cm forward from Sandringham/Vic M)

I quite like McKenzie around the 40-50 range in this draft, I think he’s got the talent and ceiling to go even earlier but the consistency wasn’t quite there this season. He had a couple of huge games and a bunch of quiet ones too.

But a 190cm+ forward who is both athletic and elite in the air will always find his name on draft boards, often higher than performances may dictate. Just needs to do all the other stuff to complement his offensive game, the unrewarded running and defensive work.

More of a third tall up forward, I was initially thinking of targeting a developing KPP here - but a bunch went in the third round and there was nobody left I particularly wanted. So McKenzie’s high upside got him the selection, the other one I considered was Ned Bowman - as another talented but inconsistent forward.

I am a big fan of this kid and IMO he doesn't get the love he deserves on the draft board.
PH is player who thrives on and performs best in contested situations, he has clean hand and use them to great effect in close and tight where the game is there to be won.
He has a strength and toughness to his game, that reminds me a bit of Jack Viney lite.
Can kick goals when he loiters in the forward half.

When the game is up for grabs and you need a hard nut at the coal face, he ticks all the boxes for me.

Great value at this late stage in the draft.

    Pick 68 - GWS - Cody Angove
  • Pick 68 - Cody Angove
    182 cm Small Forward

I don't get to watch WA footy as much as I'd like but Angove is one that impressed me every time I got to see him, with his forward craft, footy smarts and disposal all appealing traits that make him a high score involvement player. It's a position we're ridiculously well stocked in obviously, but you can never have TOO many dangerous smalls

Here is my smokey and a very quintessential Geelong pick.

He has come from relative obscurity at the start of the year in the CTL, as a top ager , flashed some brilliance in his four games- really only three game as he broke his wrist early in his fourth and last game for the season.
It was his 10 goals ( effectively in three games ) that drew attention to himself as a having AFL potential.

He is quick, he has a great leap and hits the scoreboard, he chases and creates turnovers.

His limited preparation and time in the system, suggests there is a lot of improvement in him.

Pick 70 - Gold Coast - Nathaniel Sulzberger
  • Pick 70. Gold Coast :goldcoast: - Nathanial Sulzberger - 187cm - Midfielder/Forward - Sandringham Dragons.

    imagerender-1.jpg

The former Tasmanian who moved to Caulfield Grammar this and joined the Sandringham Dragons in the Premiership Quest. Kid has raw strength and runs all day, his best attribute is that he has clean hands.
What he lacks in pace he makes up for with being strong enough the work his way in, through and out of heavy traffic.
He is essentially a midfielder but is also hand around the goals.
One of those kids that uses hard work as a way to impact games.

I wanted to get him in my draft as he is a prospect thats not got much attention or respect in the draft watching community.

He was a very important cog in the Claremont all conquering, Colts Premiership Team.

There has been a plethora of the Tigers mids and forwards that have got kudos for their productive seasons, however having a very reliable powerful tall marking option to kick to and effectively straighten a forward line up, is a real asset.

Lucas was a consistent and accurate goal kicker for the Tigers where he managed 36 goals from his 18 games.
He also put in a mountain of work performing ruck duties, when the ball was in the Claremont forward line.

Very unheralded and competent prospect for duties at the next level, good value here and will be a player that I believe Clubs will give consideration too as a rookie or a late draft pick.

Chris25 to close the draft out.

    Pick 72 - Hawthorn - Rome Burgoyne
  • Pick 72 Hawthorn - Rome Burgoyne

Without knowing exactly how many list spots Port Adelaide has, I assume they’ll have given themselves enough flexibility to match a late bid. But not in this draft, so I’ll do a sneaky bid and steal.

182cm half back, everything he does with the ball in hand is what you’d expect from the name. Foot skills and decision making is all quality. He just hasn’t quite put it all together yet and general fitness has been a big weak point to this point - but an improving one.

I reckon after a couple of years in an AFL set up, he’ll be well worth the pick here.
