It wasn't Smith keeping Macrae out per say. Bont, Libba and Treloar were the 3 main go to's, with Macrae, Smith and Daniel rotating through.

Macrae was starting a lot as a high half forward then becoming the 4th mid in general play

based on what Sanders is showing so far I expect he will get minutes in there + Harmes is a possibility as Nothernsoul74 stated.

The Bulldogs missed out on finals and lost the last game to the Eagles it's obvious there needs to be changes made so it will be interesting to see what crazy Bevo does next year. Playing his 2nd best Midfielder as a pure mid instead of a half forward might help.

You need burst from stoppage these days, you can't just have smooth movers or brutes in the middle any more. Every team is sacrificing ball winning ability for burst from stoppage. Libba, Bont and Macrae don't have it. Treloar is there, but he's often injured and getting on in age. Harmes is quick, so that's likely why they got him.

Harmes at his price and as a forward might be a lock.
