2024 Ladder Predictions

So they had a good record for half a season in 2023, in the same way as they had a good record for half a season in 2022?

They are a mentally and physically fragile football club... not a good combination, and not a combination that enables a club to genuinely contend for a premiership.
Look, I also have reservations about Carlton myself. Just because they went 11-2 doesn’t mean they’ll finish top 4 next year. They still have a bit to prove.

Having said that, my point is that it’s not farfetched for them to finish 1st. So, I think it’s reasonable to guess that they’ll finish 1st. Same case with guessing that any of Collingwood, Sydney, GWS, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Brisbane, or even Geelong will finish first. Some are more reasonable than others, but having any of these teams first is a reasonable guess IMO.

That’s my point. I just don’t think Carlton finishing 1st is a “pigs might fly” situation

For whatever reason, most sides that make a grand final or prelim from outside the top 4 don't tend to back it up the next season.

Collingwood 2007, Bulldogs 2016, Kangaroos 2014, Port 2014, GWS 2019 and Bulldogs 2021 all declined in ladder position the next season - with a few of them missing finals. North to their credit went on another good finals run, but we're talking about the ladder position here.

Brisbane were an exception 2022-2023. But it's not the clear path to a top 4 follow up position some might assume.
North Melbourne also made it to back-to-back PFs from outside of the top 4 in 2014-2015. Key thing is that they didn’t make top 4 in either of those years.

Hmm, interesting

First half of the year was meh. Second half was superb. You could argue that is flakey, or you could say he took a little time (understandably) to make his mark.

I am not convinced, but I can completely see your point.
That’s the bedding down of a new way of playing. New coaches will have this.

Yeah I did mention that, they slipped down the ladder in 2015 but repeated the trick of knocking two sides out.

I assume most Blues fans would be happy with that. We get a lot of mentally fragile sides finishing too 4 these days so I wouldn't rule it out.

How's Membrey going?
Had a tough year last year
All reports are positive so far. In full training and was in at the club most of the off season.
Seems to be moving better than he did all of last year and shed a few kg.
Was also in a good enough space to interact with fans and sign things during the open session which is a good indication he's tracking well.

I tend to believe this and Sam taylor even said pre-season that they'd battle the first 10 weeks until they get going. BUT, while I think they will make the 8 and mybe top 4, it's not nailed on. Needs another year of solid results to convince me

I think that the group never got the best out of themselves under Cameron. We could see that they had a very connected way of playing for each other very quickly in 2023, and I see no reason that that will disappear.

I think the early years under Leon were great, but as they played more finals he slowly transformed them to a slow, boring stoppage team ... put it down to the pressure to win a GF. The freedom they played with again this season was great to see. I also think they've got the balance a lot better ... Daniels back fit and Toby Bedford means less mids squeezed in at half-forward

Why do so many of these predictions just look like the current ladder and the poster's team up 4 places?

Someone from outside the 8 will be top 4. Someone who played finals will be bottom 4. At least 2 more changes to the top 8 will occur.

Here are my guesses:

Big fall: Melbourne
Big rise: Fremantle
General changes: Carlton, Saints out, Adelaide, Geelong in.

Confounding the expectations of many here GC go nowhere.

Carlton made your mob look second rate in Round 20 and we'll do it again in 2024.
Oh, I'd forgotten about the dead rubber we played against Carlton late in the season once our top 2 position was secured.

When's the last time Carlton played a dead rubber that wasn't because they'd already been eliminated from finals calculations?

They apparently played gws in the final round …. Dead rubber excuse for getting their arse kicked

You could be right.. wouldn't surprise me if Melbourne crashed and burned.

I just don't see why it's delusional. We finished 7th, we were the youngest side to play a final since 2010 or something. We have a very good coaching team. Why is it so delusional to think we could improve?

Most people had us around 13th-17th last year so obviously most people got it very wrong.

lol not even close to the youngest team to play a final since 2010!
