Butters is more likely to depart Port next year, end of Hinkley era and pre RFA
Which is why we must hold onto our F1 and perhaps try upgrade our F2 for another F1 next year, by perhaps using our current Rd 2 pick and whatever we get from Kennedy & Owies.

I'd keep the powder dry on Houston, and go for a budget speedy mid this year. 2 F1's lines up for Butters next year which could help in pursuading his management that we could get a deal done.

I don't mind the theory, but we would need to gain an understanding now from Butters and his manager whether he would entertain a move to us next year

As for the speedy mid, the decent ones would probably still cost a 1st rounder, unless you're suggesting a 2nd round draftee, none of which would guarantee a high level of quality

When people say we will be worse by far, in what area? Goals per game? Kennedy averages 0.2 more goals per game, tackles? Kennedy averages about 2 less per game, possessions per game? Both average 17.

I dont mind Kennedy but to put him up there as being miles better than Parfit is a stretch.

If Kennedy were to leave, we would get a pick 25-35 imo, you can then add Parfit for free,
I have a few cat supporter mates, they seem to be of the consensus that Parfitt was very lucky to last on their list as long as

he did. Every time I watched him play, remember noticing how much of a plodder he is. Would say that Kennedy would out

sprint him over 25 metres, but only just. If we were going to acquire another mid this off season, then surely Austin will

make sure that they have some toe. We really don't need anymore slow inside bulls.

If we were gonna get Butters we'd have to do it this year. Cody in 2026 will eat up our picks so trading future picks would be fairly limited.

Doubt we'd be in the mix for him anyway but would be interesting if he did request a trade home what sort of chaos would unfold
Yeah I really can't see us being in the mix for Butters sadly. Would be way too expensive picks and cap wise.

Surely we persevere with Young and get his self belief worked on?

It appears a confidence thing?

Certainly has shown he can play well at the highest level...
You can't turn players who are soft into someone who's hard at the contest.

You either are, or you are not.

I'm certain we've been doing this for 3 years. The Dogs would've been working on it for the years he was there also.

At some point, you have to believe a player when they show you who they are.

Not sure my heart can take it...whenever he has to dispose the ball...

I think there is way too much emphasis on low hanging fruit

Fantasia with a year to go, the cheap extensions of role players and or developing types such Young, Cottrell, Durdin, etc

None of these players/contracts would hamper us moving forward

Best list management decision we made this year, is moving on injury prone players

I think MK will be a casualty of our very one dimensional midfield, having the likes of Cripps and Hewett also in there.

I just hope that the midfield shake up will bring the point of difference that we need to compete with others.

I hate the argument that our midfield is one-dimensional. If it appears that way it is a fault of coaching/vision and (to a lesser extent) injury management as much as anything.

Across our midfield we have a bunch of unique tools who have, IMO, been underdeveloped and underutilised:

- Cripps. A 196cm, contested, pack-breaking beast. A true unicorn who SHOULD also be a marking target around the ground and the best damn 'drop back in space' interceptor when the game is on the line in the league. We, of course, ignore his wide skillset and use him exclusively as an inside bull, with occasional stints in the ruck.

- Walsh: an inside/outside, running machine, who (at least when he joined the league) had the ability to read the play of James Hird. Should be able to carve up games off the wing, half-back, and just generally going wherever he wants (a la Daicos/Hird). We, of course, ignore his wide range of capabilities and use him exclusively as a midfield bull.

- George Hewett: Mr Reliable, capable of playing a stopping opponent while also accumulating the ball. We use him as an inside bull and defensive stopper.

- Adam Cerra: a smooth moving, inside/outside midfielder who is a reliable kick and can also play wing/half back. We, of course, use him almost entirely as an inside bull and rarely use him in open space.

- Matt Kennnedy: a big bodied pure midfielder who has shown a knack for drifting forward to kick goals out of the midfield. A natural inside bull, we (obviously) use him almost exclusively as a third tall forward and makeshift defender, except when others are injured.

That's 5 very different core midfielders, all in their prime. Cerra was barely sighted this year but the other 4 all bring different things to the table. Then the rotations to add variety: should have been Martin, Cuningham, Docherty, occasionally Motlop and Fogarty (ok, injuries absolutely gutted this aspect in 2024).The only real duplication I would see is E Hollands and Kennedy, but almost in reverse (Eli has shown a preference to start forward and then push up into midfield). Then add in the different looks we create with TDK (a unicorn athletic and competitive beast) vs McKay (a true CHF and round the ground marking threat) vs SOS vs Pittonet as the ruck.

And the lack of creativity stretches further as well: why doesn't Charlie C pinch-hit in the middle a la Stringer/Franklin? Why don't we see Saad go through when we want some speed/burst, or at least come up to the wing? Cincotta had a few weeks as a tagger, the disappeared out of the rotation.

I simply cannot accept that our midfield is one-dimensional. It's a coaching issue more than anything.

To highlight the contrast, Hawthorn this season trotted out a midfield of:
  • James Worpel - a tough, inside type
  • Jai Newcombe - a tough, inside type
  • Will Day - decent speed and athleticism, but mostly a strong tough competitive mid
  • Conor Nash - a tough, defensive midfielder known for his toughness around the ball
  • Dylan Moore - a forward/mid who adds creativity when he is up and running
  • Josh Ward - an inside mid who is competitive and a good runner, but lacks speed
  • Lloyd Meek - a career backup ruck who is pretty similar to Pitto imo (or was seen that way prior to this year; he can crash and bash, and anything else is a bonus)

Hawthorn are arguably more one-dimensional than we are, and their players have similar deficiencies. None are really great defensive runners, as a team they get opened up out hte back, etc. And they don't have anyone with Cripps uniqueness, or Walsh/Cerra's skillset. And yet the Hawks managed to have probably the most dynamic, exciting and at times unstoppable midfields around.

There's increasing vibes coming out that Vossy is blaming the players and seeking to move on guys who he feels doesnt' 'fit' his structure, then overpaying to chase the perfect replacement, rather than using what he has and building something out of that. We've pushed out Stocker, Dow; we're sending out Kennedy and Young and Owies, and delisting Martin and... so that we can get the cap space to bring in Houston to fix a problem that shouldn't exist.

I'm very worried, tbh. Our depth is getting skinnier and skinnier, the players who are thriving are getting older, and there's very little coming through amongst the young guys. It's not dissimilar to Voss's previous stint at Brisbane which led to them needing a complete list rebuild, with young players leaving for 'more opportunity' even as the team fell off a cliff...

Worth a look?

Liked him in his draft year, good overhead and has leg speed.

Surprised they let him go being only 20yo. I wonder whether he's indicated that his preference will be to play for Tassie, and they've cut their losses....probably not, but it seems a bit strange given Port were desperate for key defenders this time last year - and i wouldn't classify Esava or Zerk as world beaters.

I have read a couple of times that we need to find a senior list spot for Jordan Boyd. Considering he was a mid season pick in ‘21 (not 5 years) why can’t we keep him there or has it something to do with the quantity of games he has played.

suspect his time on the list is tied to Lewis Young. Despite being encouraged to “shop himself” reports suggest LY struggling for suitors. If Young stays, likely Durdin goes.

They have similar output across a season. Both are only playing when others miss. We are reportedly getting Haynes as a tall defensive option. Despite group think on here, I suspect Voss plays Kemp mainly in defence next year pending development of a draftee, unless Haynes can turn back the clock.

Surely we must draft a young KPD this year. There are some great prospects likely at “bargain prices” due to draft depth.

It would probably be preferable to keep Sam Durdin and move Young on to create a main list spot in the overall scheme of things
I dont understand the logic.

Durdin isn’t available to play to back anyone up, regardless if he’s better than Young or not, his body can’t sustain the pressure of AFL football.

Moving on Young when we have a KPD shortage is madness, moving him on and keeping a player who’s played 2 games in 3 years for us, that’s worse than Marchbank, Cunners and Martin combined and in one of those didn’t even get through the match is a sackable offence.

If Young found a suitor and we draft a KPD which I hope we do regardless, can you imagine how stuffed we would be if a defender went down and we had to rely on Durdin?

We could find someone better than Durdin in any of the statre leagues to improve our depth, it really messes with my faith in Austin that its even up for a debate.
