“Carlton’s Zac Williams is confident he’ll return to the side for this week’s trip to Sydney following recent groin issue. Needs to get through tomorrow’s session, but club’s “conservative” approach has him in good stead.”

Yeah, but are we confident we know what the issue was ….. glute, groin, gland, something beginning with g? 😀

Isn't the groin just a front glute??? 🤣

How can you possibly be complaining about playing 6 games in 35 days?
When our opponent has played the same number of games in 43…

More a counter to the argument that we are better rested than Sydney because we have an extra day.

It’s not an excuse nor a complaint, merely an observational and objective counter.

No one should underestimate the resolve displayed in the first 3/4 against Melbourne, (that was our fifth in 27) just consider it may have an effect.

Tom McCartin definitely ruled out on Friday night.

What? say that again - you cant be right - someone else just described teh Captain's input into teh game he plays as being - excremendal

Fair point. Far too useless when we don't win it clean
Yup, and it's only +1.3 on the centre bounce differential despite having some nice moments in a highlights reel, would be interested to know where we sit in terms of scores from stoppages and direct chains from the centre bounce clearance.

We break even on inside 50s too and go very close to that on assists, so it's all for basically nothing. We're playing smash ball while many teams around and above us focus on quality of possession and disposal.

Yes, we're probably getting an extra 1-2 goals a game through free kicks from a pressured opposition defender, but we're middle of the road-to-crap outside of that.

Given the sheer amount of space afforded in the current centre bounce rules, you'd think we'd be seeking to have quick, more strong athletes in the mix.

Hollands game was basically a tale of 2 halves. First half was one of his best, the 2nd he was a reason for Melbourne coming back with his lack of processing speed and getting pinged.

I've seen posts saying he should be dropped and others saying it was one of his best games

I wonder how the MC have reviewed it.
Recency Bias - his game was like eating a beautiful juicy steak - (or mushroom for the Vego’s in the room), in rapture about its juiciness & flavour - only for the last mouthful to be full of rubbery gristle.

He just needs to trim the gristle from his game.

Well thank you now I am hungry with a serious steak craving

No Tom McCartin for Sydney this week to take on Curnow and McKay. Will miss another week with concussion symptoms. @AFL @abcsport

My untested theory: I think we struggle against a certain style, and thrive against another.

Against the teams who have poor midfields so focus on intercepts, possession and transition our structures struggle. Cats, Pies.

Against the teams who have strong midfields...well our Cripps/Walsh led midfield can out-do them. GWS, Melbourne

What style is Sydney?
They play a tennis style end to end and not to worried about the middle 😂 -- Grundy has been a huge get for them to even out the contested game ..

I use to sweat on other teams injuries, but those days are gone for me now.
Let’s take em apart full strength as possible.

Gonads pretty sure..

Sydney is a great test. If we get close or win we are right there in with a shout this year. Looking forward to it

Feel we have a brutal run of games now that Essendon are contending also for top 4. They have 2 easy games next 2.

After playing Dees, Pies, Cats, GWS, we now have Sydney, Suns, Port, Essendon and Cats. That's a really tough stretch with Essendon a real threat & Port away.

Our one easier game is GC which isnt that easy when compared to other sides who are looking at Richmond, WCE, North etc.

The above is crucial in the context of ending up top 4. Doubt we can win the flag from outside the 4 with our brutal style along with injury prone key players.

Our best is good enough. I think we match up reasonably well and while we have lost the last couple up there, we didn't really convert well

It will be another close game
So what another diazepam last quarter…..need a escript from my doc

I'm hopeful this is something that can be addressed.

Ollie appears to be very driven. It will eat away at him that he has this flaw in his game.

Agreed, that the two areas he must improve on are
1. acceleration off the mark and
2. peripheral vision.

1. He obviously has a massive tank, so should be focussed on developing that core strength/pace off the mark - I've seen Russell work on this with other players through speed parachute training (standing start with a parachute to provide resistance and focussing on explosive power). I see this as an area he can improve on.

2. The peripheral vision could be an ongoing issue. Hoping it is just inexperience, with Ollie just turning 20 and only in his 2nd year. Training/drills/simulation is the only way I can see this improving.

I like Ollie. He tries his guts out week in/week out. Is a smart footballer who follows Vossy's instructions to the letter.

Surely the coaches/player & Russell are aware, and the club can provide a program for him to follow to improve in these areas.
I'd be sending him to The Speed Factory during the off season along with Binnsy. It's the mob that Harry and Ben McKay went to a year or two back to improve their speed and technique.

Russell isn't a specialist sprints coach, so I wouldn't trust him to teach them proper technique or even correct drills. It's not rocket science, but something that can be taught by most sprints coaches to add a few extra metres to athletes.

I watched a video of H doing the sprint drills with The Speed Factory coach, and you could see that his technique had impoved - which is now reflected on the field. Can't find the video, but even Finbar looked good....and he had possibly the worst running technique I've ever seen on an AFL listed player!!!

Anyway, this is getting off track of the thread title. Blues by plenty :thumbsu:😍

H is our fastest player and he also runs a 6:30 2k apparently, which is rapid and faster than Nick Daicos runs it

I’m pretty sure Francis played last year when they beat us at the SCG.
Yep. And no Tom McCartin.

But Tom played the finals game and Francis didn’t.

Both games, however, occurred in very different portions of our 2023 season: the SCG game in the middle of our bereft-of-confidence (sack everyone) slump, while the first final during our slay-all-in-our-way (everyone is awesome) drive to the Prelim. I’m hoping for a mode2 mindset on Friday.
