Taking over from Rose early in 86 wouldn’t have helped but in 87 he bit the bullet and went on a massive rebuild, something like 20 club debutants including some who’d become club legends. Built the team he wanted. From an outside looking in perspective he did everything right.
I think if you ask any coach, they’d tell you the first couple of years is always a massive learning curve and a massive step up (if they’ve served as an assistant).
