Taking over from Rose early in 86 wouldn’t have helped but in 87 he bit the bullet and went on a massive rebuild, something like 20 club debutants including some who’d become club legends. Built the team he wanted. From an outside looking in perspective he did everything right.

I think if you ask any coach, they’d tell you the first couple of years is always a massive learning curve and a massive step up (if they’ve served as an assistant).

At a different club. Not sure if that makes a difference or not. Also, Lethal didnt take over a side that had played in the last 2 Grand Finals, he had to build it

Matthew’s also didn’t inherit through a toxic transition.

Paul Roos probably closer to Bucks in the transition to coaching. Had a year or 2 in the US after he retired then a year and a bit under Rocket before taking the mantel. The main difference being in the environment he assumed the role in.

Fly is obviously the exception, but he has had a long apprenticeship, which has served him well.
I'd imagine Pendles has taken note.

I’d hazard a guess that even Fly would say if asked that he has found it a significant step up into the senior role

McRae has said he didn't apply for a head coach role until he thought he was ready, by then he'd been in AFL coaching positions for 15 years.

Roos was contracted as a senior coach because he did a really good job as caretaker when Eade stood down. He was contracted as senior coach due to his performance as senior coach.

Sure you're going to get some some naturals from the factory floor that can down tools and do really well after taking a dramatic leap up skipping rings on the management chain without years of learning management on the job, but why you'd hire someone on a hunch that they may be able to do that is beyond me.
